Book excerpt: This study combines rheology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cement hydration studies as well as theoretical modeling to gain fundamental understanding about the microstructure, its control of flow behavior, its development due to hydration, and setting. By carefully examining the creep and recovery behavior of cement paste, two physical parameters are proposed to characterize quantitatively the microstructure of cement paste and effect of hydration, the yield stress ($tausb{rm y})$ and failure strain ($gammasb{rm y}$). It was found that $tausb{rm y}$ increased slowly in the first 1-2 hours hydration (Zone I), after which it increased much more rapidly (Zone II). The transition time between Zone I and Zone II corresponds to the initial setting time (t$sb{rm set})$ of cement. The failure strain, on the other hand, increases drastically by more than one order of magnitude at initial set. This transition time corresponds approximately to the end of the induction period as determined by calorimetry. Kinetic analysis based on the $tausb{rm y}$ measurements suggested that the rate limiting process in early cement hydration is diffusion. The oscillatory shear measurements, on the other hand, showed that the elastic modulus (G$spprime$) increased continuously with hydration, forming an S-shaped curve, increasing slowly (Zone I), then more rapidly (Zone II) and finally slowly again (Zone III). The transition time between Zone II and III corresponds to the initial setting time as defined by the $tausb{rm y}$ measurements. The increase of both $tausb{rm y}$ and G$spprime$ was attributed to the formation of hydration product (CSH) in the neck area between cement particles. A bond percolation model based on experimental results is proposed to describe this microstructure development. Cement particles are initially flocculated by Van der Waals bonds to form a three dimensional network structure. With hydration the weaker Van der Waals bonds are randomly replaced by the stronger chemical bonds due to cement hydration and formation of CSH. Cement paste sets when the chemical bonds percolate within the microstructure. Both a two dimensional triangular beam network and a two dimensional spring lattice were used to simulate microstructure development in an attempt to understand the different behaviors of G$spprime$ and $tausb{rm y}$. Modulus and yield stress of the network were calculated as weak bonds are replaced by strong bonds. In combination with the cement hydration simulation model, the predicted evolution in modulus and yield stress agrees well with experimental results. The current study concludes that the rheological behavior of cement paste is similar to that of colloidal gels. However with the hydration, the nature of the bonding between particles changes, bringing about complex rheological changes.

The time-dependent flow-behavior change controls the workability and compactability of fresh concrete. This time-dependent nature of cement-based materials is associated with the cement hydration and the consequent microstructure development. Time-dependent rheological changes of fly ash blended cement paste are investigated in this study with the flow spread, needle penetration, and rheometer tests. Hydration of the fly ash blended cement paste is monitored continuously with the ultrasonic propagation method. The results show that the thixotropy of fresh cement paste is increased by lowering the water-to-binder ratios and is mitigated by replacing Portland cement with fly ash or adding superplasticizers. The yield stress changes of the cement paste are mainly affected by the curing time rather than the water-to-binder ratio and the fly ash proportions. On the other hand, the viscosity changes slightly with time. Viscosity of the fresh paste is the controlling factor on the flow spread, and the yield stress determines the needle penetration depth. Models show that the flow spread of fresh paste is related to its viscosity with a power function and the needle penetration depth is inversely related to the yield stress.

Book excerpt: The flow behavior of concrete is highly impacted by the inherent structure of the paste matrix, which in turn is governed by the aggregation mechanisms within the paste matrix. Further, the mixing process is an essential process of cement-based materials preparation that influences the rheology of cement paste via the microstructure formation of cement paste. Due to the difficulty of measuring the rheology of concrete with aggregates, cement paste is used to represent the rheology of concrete. Based on literature in this area of research [1], it is known that a faster mixing speed is appropriate to simulate the condition of the cement paste inside of the concrete mixture during mixing. In 2011, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) published a new standard for high-shear mixing of hydraulic cement paste (ASTM C1738, “Standard Practice for High-shear Mixing of Hydraulic Cement Pastes,” 2011) to provide guidance for preparation of cement paste samples for rheological studies in hydraulic cement systems. Despite the improvements gained in the implementation of several hydraulic cement paste standards for mixing throughout the years, the relationship between the rheology and fresh state microstructure of cement paste with different mixing intensities—especially those with a very high mixing intensity range is not known yet. Overall, there is a lack of fundamental knowledge about the influence of the applied mixing forces on the internal structure of cement paste, the role of the microstructure on the rheological behavior, and microstructure formation mechanisms on rheological behavior. The objectives of this research are to (1) evaluate the influences of sample preparation on the rheology of cement paste, (2) analyze the influence of the mixing intensity on rheological behaviors, (3) characterize the microstructure of fresh state cement paste (4) understand the mechanisms of determining cement agglomerate size and identify the relationship between the microstructure and rheology of fresh state cement paste. In order to accomplish these objectives, rheology studies on cement pastes mixed with different mixing intensities were conducted. Based on the rheology studies with a high mixing intensity, it was found that increasing the mixing intensity does not always result in a reduction in the rheological properties. Rather interesting results can occur when a high-range water reducer is incorporated, and possible explanations for this unexpected behavior are presented. To prove the reasons for this unexpected result, two hypotheses were proposed: (1) If cement paste has increased ionic concentration under the high mixing intensity conditions, then the cement flocs are aggregated (flocculated), and thus these aggregated cement flocs likely contribute to the increased apparent viscosity. (2) If the polycrboxylate-based high-range water reducer (HRWR) produces unexpected air bubbles under the high mixing intensity conditions, then those air bubbles will have an influence on increasing apparent viscosity. To prove these hypotheses, a series of experiments were conducted, and based on the results of these experiments microstructural formation mechanisms were suggested to explain the unexpected flocculation under the high mixing intensity, and the numerical relationship was investigated between the microstructure and rheology properties of fresh state cement paste. In this research, the relationship between microstructural change and rheological behaviors of fresh state cement paste were investigated and a better understanding of the mechanisms of microstructural formation with various mixing intensity conditions for cement-based materials was obtained.

To enhance the current understanding of these behaviors in cement-based materials, microstructure and two different mechanical properties developments were studied in this dissertation for various mixtures. To establish a better understanding of the physical behaviors of cement particles during setting, in-situ observations were made on microstructure developments of various fresh cement pastes using an advance Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) technique called the Quantomix WETSEM(TM) capsuling system. Using the image analysis techniques on the captured images, microstructure changes of these cement pastes were then quantitatively investigated. During the study, single and multiple cement particle growth, hydration rate of different sized cement particles, water and solid volume fraction changes were studied quantitatively. The correlations of Vicat needle settlements, heat of hydration, and dynamic shear modulus development within the cement pastes with-respect-to total solids growth were also studied. Further, a comprehensive model for dynamic Young's modulus (E d ) of early-age normal concrete was proposed based on its original mix-design. Based on the experimental work and the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique, various cement paste, mortar and concrete mixture elastic moduli were modeled on a single platform. The role of hydration age, water-to-cement (w/c) ratio, curing temperature, aggregate volume percentages, aggregate absorption capacities and aggregate sizes on the development of elastic moduli were considered. Using the generalization capabilities of ANN, effective mix-design parameters affecting the concrete elastic modulus evolution at early ages were identified. It was thus possible to quantify the significant effects of age, w/c ratio, coarse aggregate volume percentage, and curing temperature on the evolution of the concrete elastic modulus. Finally, the compressive strength (f c ) of normal concrete at early ages was modeled as a function of the dynamic shear modulus (G d ). The effects of various parameters such as hydration age, water-to-cement (w/c) ratio, curing temperature, aggregate content and maximum aggregate size were examined on the G d -f c relationship of composite mixtures. Based on the key factors that were identified, G d -f c relationship was then mathematically modeled. Being in simple expression form and having the accuracy in prediction of f c values for concrete composites, the developed model can be directly used in field.

Book excerpt: The research reported in this thesis covers a number of topics that include aspects of chemistry, microstructure, deformation of cement pastes. An overall goal has been to develop a materials science basis for controlling drying shrinkage. This goal is ambitious and there is a great deal of research still required. However, progress has been made and it is reported here. First, a new phase diagram believed to be consistent with the cement hydration process has been developed. This diagram assumes that a metastable C-S-H phase, analogous to jennite but without polymerized silicate chains, is responsible for the induction period, and that the final hydration reaction is a eutectic solidification reaction consisting of layered calcium silicate hydrate and calcium hydroxide. Second, the effects of chemical admixtures on the rheological behavior of cement in its fluid state was explored. It was found that steric hindrance must play a role in the mechanism behind the dispersing properties of these chemicals. Third, new deformation mapping technique used to investigate the drying shrinkage behavior of neat cement pastes has been developed. This technique requires only two digital images; the source of the images and the source of the deformation does not affect this analysis. A dynamic new picture of drying shrinkage deformation has emerged. Both rarefactions and compactions are found to develop within the microstructure under all drying conditions, and these deformed regions interact to control the overall deformation of the material. Finally, a finite element model was used to further explore drying shrinkage in cement pastes and mortars. It was found that the drying shrinkage of neat cement pastes appears to be controlled by only a subset of calcium silicate hydrate; this subset is detectable by nitrogen sorption techniques. This relationship is perhaps the second microstructure-property relationships known for cement pastes and can be used as a design tool for developing new materials with optimum drying shrinkage properties.
