Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhenium disulfide, especially in low-dimensional form, is a subject of lively research into its electronic and optical properties. The field of twodimensional materials such as graphene and its analogues has been growing very rapidly. This class of materials also includes rhenium disulfide and rhenium diselenide, which belong to the transition-metal dichalcogenide family. Due to their reduced crystal symmetry, they exhibit distinct electrical and optical characteristics along certain in-plane crystal directions. The group-VI members such as molybdenum and tungsten are the most typical ones, but group-VII rhenium disulfide has been attracting most attention of late because of its unusual structural, electro-optical and chemical properties; especially an indirect-to-direct band-gap transition which occurs when thinned down from bulk to monolayer. The group-VI transition-metal dichalcogenides have a 1H, 2H, 3R or 1T structure, whereas ReS2 has a distorted 1T structure which imparts an in-plane anisotropy to its physical properties. Few other materials (black phosphorus, ReSe2, TiS3, ZrS3) exhibit such an in-plane structural anisotropy. This makes ReS2 unique among the transition-metal chalcogenides. Atomically thin rhenium disulphide is characterized by weak interlayer coupling and a distorted 1T structure, which leads to the anisotropy in optical and electrical properties. It also possesses structural and vibrational anisotropy, layer-independent electrical and optical properties and metal-free magnetism. In these respects, it differs from group-VI transition-metal dichalcogenides such as MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2. It is already being used in solid-state electronics, catalysis, energy storage and energy-harvesting applications.

Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Manganese, Technetium and Rhenium is a three-chapter book that discusses the composition, structure, properties, and change of manganese, technetium, and rhenium. The first chapter in this particular book is the 37th chapter of the volume of a series, which focuses on manganese. The history, occurrence, metallurgy, uses, and chemistry of manganese are specifically discussed in this chapter. The compounds of manganese are also presented. This chapter is followed by a chapter on the chemistry of technetium, including its discovery, isolation, and compounds. The last chapter is devoted to rhenium, discussing its discovery, isolation, compounds, and physical and chemical properties. This book will be invaluable to chemistry students and practitioners, especially those interested in the elements featured in this release.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recovery and separation of molybdenum and rhenium from a process solution was accomplished by a technique developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines involving a combined solvent extraction and activated carbon adsorption procedure. The processing sequence required treatment of the solution with SO2 to reduce the chlorate ion and adjust the pH prior to solvent extraction of molybdenum and rhenium with a tertiary amine. Molybdenum and rhenium were stripped from the organic phase with an NH4OH solution, and the strip solution was then passed through activated carbon to preferentially adsorb the rhenium. After washing entrained molybdenum from the column with a brine solution, rhenium was eluted with an MeOH-H2O mixture. The activated carbon was regenerated with water. Molybdenum was recovered as (NH4)6Mo--O24 by evaporating the column effluent. Rhenium in the column eluate was reextracted with a tertiary amine, stripped from the organic phase with dilute NH4OH, and recovered as NH4ReO4 by evaporating the strip solution. The final (NH4)ReO4 product contained
