Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems are emerging as one of the most pervasive computing technologies due to their broad applicability. RFID systems consist of tiny integrated circuits equipped with antennas (RFID tags) that communicate with their reading devices (RFID readers). This technology works using radio-frequency waves without line of sight. It has created tremendous opportunities for linking various objects in the physical world. These objects can be numbered, identified, cataloged, and tracked. RFID systems present many advantages and features that cannot be found in other ubiquitous computing environments. RFID communication is fast, convenient, and its application can substantially save time, improve services, reduce labor cost, thwart product counterfeiting and theft, increase productivity gains, and maintain quality standards. Suitable for layman as well as professionals, this book examines various RFID topics, such as: RFID system elements * tools * techniques and technologies behind RFID * implementation issues of RFID * RFID and bar code technology * RFID standards * RFID systems and solutions for library * RFID applications in various arenas * RFID and consumer privacy issues * near field communications and RFID in Indian and global perspectives.

Book excerpt: The “EPCglobal Architecture Framework” is currently the most accepted technical approach to the Internet of Things and provides a solid foundation for building Business-to-Business information networks based on unique identifications of ‘things’. Lately, the vision of the Internet of Things has been extended to a more holistic approach that integrates sensors as well as actuators and includes non-business stakeholders. A detailed look at the current state of the art in research concerning cost and benefit estimations is provided and the limits of Cost Benefit Sharing for RFID-based IT-infrastructures are explained. In this work a market driven evaluation based on sales potential of information is developed. Simple technical means for aggregation of micro values to a billable amount are discussed. The requirements for electronic billing infrastructure are defined and a matching e-billing solutions for an evaluation scenario is presented, providing a technical infrastructure to evaluate and bill product-related information in a future Internet of Things, based on an extended EPCglobal Architecture. Further opportunities and threats are discussed to provide an overview of its future potential. As a result it will contribute to the sustainable success of the Internet of Things itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the development of new technology cause an increase in the level of surveillance used by central government? Is the growth in surveillance merely a reaction to terrorism, or a solution to crime control? Are there more structural roots for the increase in surveillance? This book attempts to find some answers to these questions by examining how governments have increased their use of surveillance technology. Focusing on a range of countries in Europe and beyond, this book demonstrates how government penetration into private citizens' lives was developing years before the ‘war on terrorism.’ It also aims to answer the question of whether central government actually has penetrated ever deeper into the lives of private citizens in various countries inside and outside of Europe, and whether citizens are protected against it, or have fought back. The main focus of the volume is on how surveillance has shaped the relationship between the citizen and the State. The contributors and editors of the volume look into the question of how central government came to intrude on citizens’ private lives from two perspectives: identification card systems and surveillance in post-authoritarian societies. Their aim is to present the heterogeneity of the European historical surveillance past in the hope that this might shed light on current trends. Essential reading for criminologists, sociologists and political scientists alike, this book provides some much-needed historical context on a highly topical issue.

Book excerpt: With the influx of internet and mobile technology usage, many medical institutions—from doctor’s offices to hospitals—have implemented new online technologies for the storage and access of health data as well as the monitoring of patient health. Telehealth was particularly useful during the COVID-19 pandemic, which monumentally increased its everyday usage. However, this transition of health data has increased privacy risks, and cyber criminals and hackers may have increased access to patient personal data. Medical staff and administrations must remain up to date on the new technologies and methods in securing these medical systems and records. The Research Anthology on Securing Medical Systems and Records discusses the emerging challenges in healthcare privacy as well as the technologies, methodologies, and emerging research in securing medical systems and enhancing patient privacy. It provides information on the implementation of these technologies as well as new avenues of medical security research. Covering topics such as biomedical imaging, internet of things, and watermarking, this major reference work is a comprehensive resource for security analysts, data scientists, hospital administrators, leaders in healthcare, medical professionals, health information managers, medical professionals, mobile application developers, security professionals, technicians, students, libraries, researchers, and academicians.
