Book Synopsis Living with the Locals by : John Maynard
Download or read book Living with the Locals written by John Maynard and published by National Library of Australia. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living with the Locals comprises the stories of 13 white people who were taken in by Indigenous communities of the Torres Strait islands and eastern Australia between the 1790s and the 1870s, for periods from a few months to over 30 years. The shipwreck survivors, convicts and ex-convicts survived only through the Indigenous people's generosity. They assimilated to varying degrees into an Indigenous way of life and, for the most part, both parties mourned the white people's return to European life. The authors bring fresh insight to the stories and re-evaluate the encounters between Indigenous people and the white people who became part of their families.

Download or read book Mapping Our World written by Peter Barber and published by National Library of Australia. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cover image, World Map by Fra Mauro c. 1450, is one of the most important and famous maps of all time. This monumental map of the world was created by the monk Fra Mauro in his monastery on the island of San Michele in the Venetian lagoon. Now the centrepiece of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in St Marc’s Square in Venice, the map in its nearly 600-year history has never left Venice – until now. Renowned for its sheer size - over 2.3 metres square - and stunning colours, the map was made at a time of transition between the medieval world view and new knowledge uncovered by the great voyages of discovery. Brilliantly painted and illuminated on sheets of oxhide, the sphere of the Earth is surrounded by the sphere of the Ocean in the ancient way. Yet Fra Mauro included the latest information on exploration by Portuguese and Arab navigators. Commissioned by King Afonso V of Portugal, it is the last of the great medieval world maps to inspire navigators in the Age of Discovery to explore beyond the Indian Ocean.
Book Synopsis High Seas and High Teas by : Roslyn Russell
Download or read book High Seas and High Teas written by Roslyn Russell and published by National Library of Australia. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The rats I frighten away by throwing books or anything hard at the spot at which they commence their gnawing,’ wrote emigrant Janet Ronald in her journal kept aboard the Invincible in 1857. Packed in cheek by jowl with fellow passengers and crew, life on board the ships transporting convicts and free settlers from Britain and Ireland to Australia in the nineteenth century was rigidly defined by social class: lower-class passengers dined on homemade concoctions of mutton fat pudding and preserved potatoes, while those travelling first-class enjoyed elaborate multi-course dinners, including fresh meat, slaughtered on board. Navigating the social mores on these giant floating microcosms was only half the story. Amid the chronicles of flirtations and hijinks, odours and rats, nineteenth-century diaries capture tales of despotic captains, disease and domestic discord. From those sailing under servitude to emigrants seeking a new life, the people who braved the journey changed Australia.
Download or read book Heaphy written by Iain Sharp and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richly illustrated with Charles Heaphy's remarkable paintings and drawings as well as photographs and maps from the period, this engaging work tells the story of Heaphy's life and his art. A draughtsman, explorer, surveyor, gold agent, geologist, soldier, war hero, politician, land commissioner, and judge—even by the versatile standards of Victorian pioneers, Charles Heaphy had an unusually varied career. His biography tells as much about his own life as it does of the settlement of New Zealand. From his earliest surviving watercolor of bird life in 1839 to his last-known sketch, drawn on the back of an envelope in 1879, Charles Heaphy's art represents a remarkable visual diary of life as a settler in New Zealand.

There are autographs by singers, dancers and visual artists, authors and poets, scientists, explorers, governors and politicians, aviators, activists, sportsmen and women, and Royal family members.
