Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects thirteen of David Schmidtz's essays on the question of what it takes to live a good life, given that we live in a social and natural world. Part One defends a non-maximizing conception of rational choice, explains how even ultimate goals can be rationally chosen, defends the rationality of concern and regard for others (even to the point of being willing to die for a cause), and explains why decision theory is necessarily incomplete as a tool for addressing such issues. Part Two uses the tools of analytic philosophy to explain what we can do to be deserving ,what is wrong with the idea that we ought to do as much good as we can, why mutual aid is good, but why the welfare state does not work as a way of institutionalizing mutual aid, and why transferring wealth from those who need it less to those who need it more can be a bad idea even from a utilitarian perspective. Most ambitiously, Part Two offers an overarching, pluralistic moral theory that defines the nature and limits of our obligations to each other and to our individual selves. Part Three discusses the history and economic logic of alternative property institutions, both private and communal, and explains why economic logic is an indispensable tool in the field of environmental conflict resolution. In the final essay, Schmidtz brings the volume full circle by considering the nature and limits of our obligations to nonhuman species, and how the status of nonhuman species ought to enter into our deliberations about what sort of life is worth living.

She should have stayed in my past. But now that she's back… I'm going to make sure she never leaves again. I might seem cruel. Or overprotective. But if there's one thing I've learned in this world, it's this: You gotta find what you love and hold it close. She got away once. Never, ever again. Because when I learn what she took with her, I explode. No one – NO ONE – hides my son from me. It seems I've got to teach pretty little Angel a lesson or two. This won't be the sweet reunion she might've been expecting. It's going to be dark, sweaty, and brutal. Because I'm an outlaw. And when you're my bride… you're playing by my rules.

Environmental disasters and AI armies have caused the human population of Earth to flee. They lie scattered across space stations and colonies, overcrowded and suffering. The Earth is cut off by the Interdiction Zone: a network of satellites that prevents any escape from the planet. The incredible cost of maintaining it has crippled humanity, who struggle under the totalitarian yoke of the Sol Commonwealth government. Many have been driven to the edge of society, taking any work offered, criminal and otherwise, in order to survive. The crew of the Arcus are just such people. Through the Interdiction Zone, a world of priceless artifacts awaits, provided anyone is crazy enough to make the run. With fuel running low and cred accounts even lower, the Arcus’ survival might depend on taking the job. Yet on arrival on Earth, the crew discovers that what remains of their world is not as they have been told, and the truth may bring the entire Sol Commonwealth tumbling down…

Book excerpt: Chase has been reunited with his younger sister, Lilli. He doesn't remember his past, but Lilli does—she remembers their parents, and life before their planet was destroyed. Chase and Lilli are different. Chase can "phase"—pass through objects, and Lilli can "transport"—send a copy of herself to other locations, even other planets. There are only two people who may have the key to their abilities, and their purposes: Captain Lennard, who is harboring Chase and Lilli (and Chase's friend, Parker) on his spaceship, and Asa Kaplan, who may be responsible for an interplanetary takeover meant to push Lennard out of power. Chase, Parker, Lilli, android Mina, and the solider Maurus are fighting for their lives, the lives of Lennard and his crew, and for the truth about what Asa has in store for the universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks, how would a stable, prosperous economy of the future look if one started with a blank sheet of paper? Given that the world’s economy is locked into a coevolution with nature, the urgency of this question is brought into stark relief by the 2020 coronavirus pandemic and ongoing climate change. While physical technologies to build such an economy mostly exist, the social technologies, in the form of institutions, governance and policies, do not. The development of these social technologies will necessitate a reconsideration of economic norms: in particular, what is the economy for, and what are we, as actors within it, striving for? This book integrates normative, institutional, political and economic requirements into a systematic framework to drive our present growth economy toward a future planetarian one. It outlines a suite of interrelated policies to increase the economy’s material efficiency, establish a basic living standard, and reform the money system, while along the way eliminating economic debt and balancing government budgets. The framework and policies together form a paradigm of market planetarianism: the idea that the power of markets may be used to steer the economy toward a desired long-term goal. The methodological aspects of this paradigm are covered in the companion volume, Economics of a Crowded Planet.

A Penguin Classic This is the story of Moses Herzog, a great sufferer, joker, mourner, and charmer. Although his life steadily disintegrates around him—he has failed as a writer and teacher, as a father, and has lost the affection of his wife to his best friends—Herzog sees himself as a survivor, both of his private disasters and those of the age. He writes unsent letters to friends and enemies, colleagues and famous people, revealing his wry perception of the world and the innermost secrets of his heart. This Penguin Classics edition features an introduction by Philip Roth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study of remedies is to offer a living, imaginative picture of the metallic remedies of anthroposophic and homeopathic medicine. In contrast to chemical, agent-based medicine, anthroposophic remedies are based on a paradigm that focuses on processes and spiritual-evolutionary relationships. Fairy-tale imaginations allow us to recognize spiritual efficacies in their lawfulness, making it possible to develop the kind of understanding that matches the nature of the remedies. Approaching remedies through fairy tales is not a way of recasting abstract, scientific information in a more accessible and interesting form but is the appropriate approach for these remedies. The author interprets fairy-tale imaginations on three different levels: the planetary spheres, metal processes, and human soul qualities. In this way they offer us a marvelous holistic picture of the action of the metals in therapy. The book also demonstrate that the imaginations in fairy tales have broad significance in and of themselves. Simply occupying oneself with them can be a genuine help in life. Both research and experience confirm that the healing effects of practicing imagination can extend to the physiological processes of the body. The Healing Power of Planetary Metals shows that working with imaginations has real significance today.

Book excerpt: The winner of the Man Booker Prize, this "expertly written, perfectly constructed" bestseller (The Guardian) is now a Starz miniseries. It is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to stake his claim in New Zealand's booming gold rush. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of unexplained events: a wealthy man has vanished, a prostitute has tried to end her life, and an enormous cache of gold has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely ornate as the night sky. Richly evoking a mid-nineteenth-century world of shipping, banking, and gold rush boom and bust, The Luminaries is at once a fiendishly clever ghost story, a gripping page-turner, and a thrilling novelistic achievement. It richly confirms that Eleanor Catton is one of the brightest stars in the international literary firmament.

Like a lovechild of Gravity and The Martian, it's a rousing space opera for any age, meticulously researched and relentlessly paced, that balances action, science, humor, and most importantly, two compelling main characters in Liam and Phoebe. A fantastic start to an epic new series.” —Soman Chainani, New York Times bestselling author of the School for Good and Evil series “Emerson's writing explodes off the page in this irresistible space adventure, filled with startling plot twists, diabolical aliens, and (my favorite!) courageous young heroes faced with an impossible task.” —Lisa McMann, New York Times bestselling author of the Unwanteds series It is Earth year 2213—but, of course, there is no Earth anymore. Not since it was burned to a cinder by the sun, which has mysteriously begun the process of going supernova. The human race has fled to Mars, but this was only a temporary solution while we have prepared for a second trip: a one-hundred-fifty-year journey to a distant star, our best guess at where we might find a new home. Liam Saunders-Chang is one of the last humans left on Mars. The son of two scientists who have been racing against time to create technology vital to humanity’s survival, Liam, along with his friend Phoebe, will be on the last starliner to depart before Mars, like Earth before it, is destroyed. Or so he thinks. Because before this day is over, Liam and Phoebe will make a series of profound discoveries about the nature of time and space and find out that the human race is just one of many in our universe locked in a dangerous struggle for survival.
