Book excerpt: This volume contributes rich, new material to provide insights into indigenous responses to the colonial empires of Great Britain (South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe (Rhodesia)) and Germany (Namibia) and explore the complex intellectual, cultural, literary, and political borders and identities that emerged across these spaces. Contributors include distinguished global scholars in the field as well as exciting young scholars. The essays link global-national-local forces in history by analysing how indigenous elites not only interacted with colonial empires to absorb, adapt and re-cast new ideas, forms of discourse, and social formations, but also networked with ordinary people to forge new social, ethnic, and political identities and viable social forces. Translated and other primary texts in appendices add to the insights.

Book excerpt: A deeply felt and engaging personal account of Zimbabwe's political awakening by one of its best-known historians. I did not set out for Rhodesia as a radical' writes Terence Ranger. This memoir of the years between 1957, when he first went to Southern Rhodesia, and 1967 when he published his first book, is both an intimate record of the African awakening which Ranger witnessed during those ten years, and of the process which led him to write Revolt in Southern Rhodesia. Intended as both history and as historiography, Writing Revolt is also about the ways in which politics and history interacted. The men with whom Ranger discussed Zimbabwean history were the leaders of African nationalism; his seminar papers were sent to prisons and into restricted areas. Both they and he were making political as well as intellectual discoveries. The book also includes a brief account of Ranger's life before he went to Africa. TERENCE RANGER was Emeritus Rhodes Professor of Race Relations, University of Oxfordand author of many books including Are we not also Men? (1995), Voices from the Rocks (1999) and Bulawayo Burning (2010), and co-editor of Violence and Memory (2000). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British South Africa Company and the irregularity of its financial and political operations are dealt with in detail. Keppel-Jones also discusses the development in the midst of the indigenous population of an alien white society and state, from their crude beginnings to their emergence in a form still recognizable today. The reader is led to conclude that by 1902 Southern Rhodesia was already set on the road that would lead to the upheavals of the second half of the twentieth-century. The author examines the racial consciousness and prejudice of the white society and addresses an important question: why did the imperial government grant a royal charter to the BSA Company? The facts show conclusively that the imperial government had little interest in Central Africa or care for its fate except when foreign competition appeared. Keppel-Jones also reveals the important role played by black troops employed by the Company in suppressing the rebellions of 1896-7. For opposite reasons, neither blacks nor whites have been willing to recognize this; on the other hand the habit of the 'men-on-the-spot' of making and carrying out decisions without regard to their superiors in London is a commonplace of imperial history. One of the main themes of the book is the tension between the unofficial imperialists, straining at the leash, and the Colonial Office, struggling to hold them back. Rhodes and Rhodesia is based on extensive use of public records, mainly in the Public Record Office, London, and the National Archives of Zimbabwe, of collections of private papers, and of contemporary published works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arrival of the International Law: Achievements and Prospects can fairly be described as a major event in international legal publishing. It has been written by international lawyers from the North, the South, the East and the West, whose differing origins and different, or even opposed, academic backgrounds have ensured that the book encapsulates and brings into focus `the main forms of civilization' and `the principal legal systems of the world'. The book's most distinctive feature is its international, multi-cultural and polyphonic nature. International Law: Achievements and Prospects aims to inform and to educate, to make the discipline of international law accessible to a very broad public, and to promote a meeting of minds on fundamental notions, key concepts, and the guiding principles of international law, over and beyond frontiers, ideologies and doctrines. In addition, it is intended to provide a framework for thought, to describe what international law is today, to specify its nature, define its purpose and show its strengths, and also to point out its weaknesses. All the contributing authors are or have been practitioners of international law. Their contributions express a global view of international law which helps to unravel the complex reality of the contemporary world. International Law: Achievements and Prospects has been produced under the auspices of UNESCO; its content also aspires to reflect, in some measure, the imprint of that Organization's sponsorship.

Book excerpt: The history of women guerilla fighters in the Zimbabwean National Liberation war (1965-80), this book provides an examination of the many different groups of women who joined the armed struggle and contributes to a feminist understanding of Zimbabwe and African history and politics. Most previously published accounts of this event in history have tended to focus on the feminine' or 'natural' role women played in it, ignoring the experiences of female guerilla fighters. This book redresses the balance, giving voice to a previously unsung group of women.'
