Book Synopsis Systematic Revision and Morphological Phylogenetic Analysis of Anchylorhynchus Schoenherr, 1836 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae: Derelomini) by : author 1
Download or read book Systematic Revision and Morphological Phylogenetic Analysis of Anchylorhynchus Schoenherr, 1836 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae: Derelomini) written by author 1 and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Abstract: Anchylorhynchus Schoenherr is a genus of palm-associated weevils currently including 22 described species in the Neotropics. These weevils engage in brood pollination interactions with species in at least four genera of palms (Arecaceae), representing an emerging system for the study of mutualisms. Here we revise the taxonomy of Anchylorhynchus and propose the first phylogenetic hypothesis for the group, based on morphology. Anchylorhynchus chrysomeloides sp. nov., Anchylorhynchus goiano sp. nov., Anchylorhynchus imitator sp. nov., Anchylorhynchus latipes sp. nov., Anchylorhynchus multisquamis sp. nov. and Anchylorhynchus rectus sp. nov. are described, Anchylorhynchus gottsbergerorum Vanin is a new junior subjective synonym of Anchylorhynchus bicarinatus O'Brien, and Anchylorhynchus eriospathae Bondar and Anchylorhynchus pictipennis Hustache are new junior subjective synonyms of Anchylorhynchus tremolerasi Hustache, resulting in 25 valid species for the genus. We provide genus and species descriptions with a new dichotomous key to the species and updated information on geography and host associations based on museum records and extensive new collections. We also produce a new morphological matrix with 113 characters, 11 of them based on measurements while accounting for allometry, correlation and power to delimit groups. The software pipeline to produce these characters was encoded in a graphical user interface named DiscretzR, made available here. Analysis of this matrix under parsimony and Bayesian inference resulted in strong support for the monophyly of Anchylorhynchus, but weaker support for most clades within the genus. Reconstruction of the host plant associations indicates that the common ancestor of Anchylorhynchus visited flowers of Syagrus Mart., with later transitions to other genera restricted to one of the major clades of Anchylorhynchus. This taxonomic revision with the first phylogeny for the group provides a foundation for future evolutionary studies in the genus. Keywords: Coleoptera, systematics, morphology, taxonomic revision, Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Arecaceae, Syagrus, Butia, Oenocarpus, Euterpe"--Page 3.

Book Synopsis Revision and Phylogeny of the Tribe Curiini LeConte (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae) by : Eugenio Hernán Nearns
Download or read book Revision and Phylogeny of the Tribe Curiini LeConte (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae) written by Eugenio Hernán Nearns and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: A revision and phylogenetic analysis of the tribe Curiini LeConte, 1873 is presented. A phylogenetic analysis of Curiini employing 31 ingroup taxa, 5 outgroup taxa, and 42 morphological characters was conducted. Results suggest that the tribe is paraphyletic with respect to the outgroup taxa chosen. The genus Curius is monophyletic and strongly supported by 7 synapomorphies. The genus Plectromerus is paraphyletic and strongly supported by 6 synapomorphies. Results of this analysis suggest that Curiosa dominicana Micheli, 1983 is a highly derived Plectromerus, therefore, Plectromerus dominicanus (Micheli, 1983), new combination, is proposed. Eight new species of Plectromerus are described and illustrated: Plectromerus new species 1 from Nicaragua, Plectromerus new species 2 from Guatemala, Plectromerus new species 3 from Costa Rica and Honduras, Plectromerus new species 4 and Plectromerus new species 8 from Dominican Republic, Plectromerus new species 5 from Haiti, Plectromerus new species 6 from Cayman Islands, and Plectromerus new species 7 from Panama. The following new synonymies are proposed: Plectromerus costatus Cazier & Lacey, 1952 = Plectromerus dentipes (Olivier, 1790), and Plectromerus crenulatus Cazier, 1952 = Plectromerus distinctus (Cameron, 1910). Diagnoses of all known curiine species are presented with notes on distribution, diversity, and relationships. New country records are reported for P. dentipes; P. exis Zayas, 1975; P. fasciatus (Gahan, 1895); P. pumilus Cazier & Lacey, 1952; and P. wappesi Giesbert, 1985. Keys to the tribe as well as the four species of Curius and 27 species of Plectromerus are presented. A biogeographic analysis based on the results of a phylogenetic analysis of the tribe suggests that more basal species of Curius and Plectromerus are of Antillean distribution while more derived taxa are of Antillean, Central American, and South American distribution.

Book Synopsis At the Size Limit - Effects of Miniaturization in Insects by : Alexey A. Polilov
Download or read book At the Size Limit - Effects of Miniaturization in Insects written by Alexey A. Polilov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses microinsects, their structure and their differences from larger relatives. Moreover, it discusses structural changes that accompany extreme diminution in living organisms, evolutionary inventions that help insects to live in the microworld, and factors that limit the size of animals. It also takes a careful look at the potential benefits of the study of microinsects for solving biotechnological and fundamental scientific problems. Miniaturization is not only a trend in technology: it is also one of the trends in the evolution of life. Many of the problems modern engineers are still struggling with were solved by nature millions of years ago. The world of microscopic organisms, invisible to the naked eye, is all around us. Microinsects — the extremely diverse range of miniature insects less than a millimeter long — are one of the most intriguing components of this microworld. Having evolved to the size of unicellular organisms, the smallest insects managed not only to preserve their structural complexity, but also to evolve some novel features not found in larger insects.

Book Synopsis Biology of Chrysomelidae by : P. Jolivet
Download or read book Biology of Chrysomelidae written by P. Jolivet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in most groups of insects, scientific research on the Chrysomelidae began in Europe in 1758, with the description of a few genera and species by the Scandinavian entomologists C. von Linne, I.C. Fabricius, and others. As the 19th century dawned, many systematic entomologists took up the study of chrysomelid beetles, together with other groups of beetles, and many new species and genera were described from all parts of the world. This trend has, of course, continued down to the present time. However, researches on the Chrysomelidae did not remain restricted to systematics, and many new lines of study have been followed, especially in the present century, by workers who have benefitted from the advances made in related fields of pure and applied entomology. Much has been achieved in the study of the Chrysomelidae, as elsewhere, and it is the aim of the present book to provide a summary and guide to these achievements. It is also to be expected that this book will provide a stimulus for further studies on the Chrysomelidae, so that we can anticipate continuing progress in our knowledge and understanding of this group through the endeavours of an ever-increasing number of scientists. I offer my congratulations to all concerned in the preparation of this book and my best wishes for its success.
