Download or read book Deception in War written by Jon Latimer and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2003-04-29 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Trojan Horse to Gulf War subterfuge, this far-reaching military history examines the importance and ingenuity of wartime deception campaigns. The art of military deception is as old as the art of war. This fascinating account of the practice draws on conflicts from around the world and across millennia. The examples stretch from the very beginnings of recorded military history—Pharaoh Ramses II's campaign against the Hittites in 1294 B.C.—to modern times, when technology has placed a stunning array of devices into the arsenals of military commanders. Military historians often underestimate the importance of deception in warfare. This book is the first to fully describe its value. Jon Latimer demonstrates how simple tricks have been devastatingly effective. He also explores how technology has increased the range and subtlety of what is possible—including bogus radio traffic, virtual images, even false smells. Deception in War includes examples from land, sea, and air to show how great commanders have always had, as Winston Churchill put it, that indispensable “element of legerdemain, an original and sinister touch, which leaves the enemy puzzled as well as beaten.”

Book excerpt: Jonathan Fox is an engineering graduate student returning to a summer internship in the telecommunications industry. He has been given a copy of a Confidential letter written by an Air Force colonel on Guam that suggests a wiretap scam of significant proportion has been set up on a fiber-optic undersea cable network. One of the wiretap locations is on Andersen Air Force Base, on Guam, with other locations in California, Japan, and Hawaii. National security may be at risk, aside from theft -of-service. Jonathans task is to determine how the wiretap scam was established, by whom, and for what purpose. He is assigned to work inside the companys cable station on Guam, ostensibly to fine-tune cable equipment, but quietly snoops on the technicians, a task he finds necessary but distasteful. On his second day on Guam he is invited out to Andersen, where he finds the colonel who authored the Confidential letter to his company has been murdered. As Jonathan pursues his investigation he finds the wiretap arrangement has been established for a very intriguing purpose. The action in Pacific Wiretap creates a scene of adventure, crime, and daring that spans the Pacific Ocean itself.

Book Synopsis Report on the Bottom-up Review by : United States. Department of Defense
Download or read book Report on the Bottom-up Review written by United States. Department of Defense and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1993, Secretary of Defense Aspin initiated a comprehensive review of the nation's defense strategy, force structure, modernization, infrastructure, and foundations. He felt that a department-wide review needed to be conducted "from the bottom up" because of the dramatic changes that have occurred in the world as a result of the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. These changes in the international security environment have fundamentally altered America's security needs. Thus, the underlying premise of the Bottom-Up Review was that we needed to reassess all of our defense concepts, plans, and programs from the ground up. This final report on the Bottom-Up Review provides the results of that unprecedented and collaborative effort. It represents the product of hundreds of individuals' labor and dedication. It describes the extensive analysis that went into the review and the recommendations and decisions that emerged.
