Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The British Raj (a Sanskrit-based word meaning dominion or empire), which has taken on a wholly Victorian flavor as a result of popular films and books, actually began in piecemeal fashion when the East India Company developed settlements in Madras, Calcutta, and Bombay during the seventeenth century. As these small enclaves grew into cities, the British tried hard to give them the look and feel of the country they had left behind." "Barbara Groseclose examines British public statuary and church monuments in India from the standpoint of its function in regard to the British themselves. Arguing that doubts and anxieties, as well as assumptions about their own place in Indian life, bear strongly on the roles and achievements for which the British sought or received commemoration, she analyzes the British self-characterizations of victor, administrator, scholar, and benefactor in sculptural imagery. Her close scrutiny of these largely forgotten works of art reveals the crucial part they played in helping the British to explain and justify empire to themselves. But the author's sense of the inherently ambivalent nature of the colonizer/colonized relationship prevents this book from becoming simply a platform for the indictment of imperialists or for an insistence on the wholesale victimization of their subjects. Rather, Groseclose discerns in this art some of the complicated emotional undertones simultaneously shaping and destabilizing the attempted economic and intellectual domination of India."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Beginning as a junior clerk in 1823, John Stuart Mill spent thirty-five years as an administrator in India House, the London headquarters of the East India Company, which dominated the Indian subcontinent. In his Autobiography, Mill paid scant attention to his long imperial career, and following his lead, later commentators have concluded that Indian administration was insignificant for Mill's intellectual development. Based upon extensive investigation of Mill's dispatches to India, this book rejects the long-accepted interpretation and suggests that important parallels exist between Mill's development as a thinker and his neglected India House career. It shows that at each step of Mill's intellectual maturation - rigorous early training at his father's side, youthful rebellion accompanied by a searching out of alternative opinions, and mature retreat from the extreme positions of his rebellious phase - Mill took up or abandoned administrative ideas that have much in common with the more abstract concepts that he was absorbing or shedding. For example, Mill's fascination with Romantic doctrines during the time of his mental crisis is shown to have had an Indian dimension. At the same time Mill concluded that Romantic doctrines were useful for amending Utilitarian ideas, he fell under the influences of key imperial administrators who advanced pragmatic policies for India that reinforced many Romantic ideas. Consequently, Mill modified his father's naive plans for reforming India, just as he altered Utilitarian doctrine in general, in favor of more complex notions about reform and progress. The author explores other parallels in Mill's evolving intellectual and administrative priorities and concludes that at his India House desk Mill found not only plenty of supporting evidence for his shifting intellectual positions but also ample opportunity to apply the abstract ideas that mattered most to him at different times of his life. In this way, the author challenges the picture of Mill's imperial career - as a dull and unimportant part of his life - that Mill painted for posterity in his Autobiography. He further suggests that Mill belittled his long India House experience because it did not fit the narrative structure he wanted to impose on his past. Since the essential story of Mill's Autobiography is one of a great mind being formed by interacting with other great minds, the banal concerns of Indian administration could hardly play a large role. The author also examines Mill's intellectual relationship with imperialism in the light of recent colonial discourse theory. He concludes that Mill altered his general social and political views as a result of the British experience in India and that his mature views of radical reform in Ireland and Great Britain owed much to the years that he spent as an imperial administrator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligence is often the critical factor in a successful military campaign. This was certainly the case for Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, in the Peninsular War. In this book, author Huw J. Davies offers the first full account of the scope, complexity, and importance of Wellington’s intelligence department, describing a highly organized, multifaceted series of networks of agents and spies throughout Spain and Portugal—an organization that was at once a microcosm of British intelligence at the time and a sophisticated forebear to intelligence developments in the twentieth century. Spying for Wellington shows us an organization that was, in effect, two parallel networks: one made up of Foreign Office agents “run” by British ambassadors in Spain and Portugal, the other comprising military spies controlled by Wellington himself. The network of agents supplied strategic intelligence, giving the British army advance warning of the arrival, destinations, and likely intentions of French reinforcements. The military network supplied operational intelligence, which confirmed the accuracy of the strategic intelligence and provided greater detail on the strengths, arms, and morale of the French forces. Davies reveals how, by integrating these two forms of intelligence, Wellington was able to develop an extremely accurate and reliable estimate of French movements and intentions not only in his own theater of operations but also in other theaters across the Iberian Peninsula. The reliability and accuracy of this intelligence, as Davies demonstrates, was central to Wellington’s decision-making and, ultimately, to his overall success against the French. Correcting past, incomplete accounts, this is the definitive book on Wellington’s use of intelligence. As such, it contributes to a clearer, more comprehensive understanding of Wellington at war and of his place in the history of British military intelligence.
