Book Synopsis Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensing by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensing written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear and related techniques can help develop climate smart agricultural practices by optimizing water use efficiency. The measurement of soil water content is essential to improve the use of this resource in agriculture. However, most sensors monitor small areas (less than 1m in radius), hence a large number of sensors are needed to obtain soil water content across a large area. This can be both costly and labour intensive and so larger scale measuring devices are needed as an alternative to traditional point-based soil moisture sensing techniques. The cosmic ray neutron sensor (CRNS) is such a device that monitors soil water content in a non-invasive and continuous way. This publication provides background information about this novel technique, and explains in detail the calibration and validation process.

Book excerpt: This text identifies common mistakes and challenges in food preservation in developing countries, offering solutions which can play a significant role in reducing food waste in these countries. The book offers critical analysis of current preservation techniques for fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, dairy, and grain, identifying key mistakes and challenges and proposing effective solutions. Feasibility tests for implementing these innovative approaches are also presented. A well-rounded study of the various causes of food waste in developing nations, this book plays a key role in bringing effective food preservation methods to the developing world. Food Preservation in Developing Countries: Challenges and solutions studies common food preservation techniques for fruits and vegetables, fish, meat, dairy, and grains, pinpointing the areas where waste occurs due to transportation, contamination, and low quality post processing. Innovative potential solutions are presented, including the feasibility of implementation of these advanced preservation techniques. The book takes a critical look at barriers to proper food preservation in these regions and offers practical solutions which can be implemented in a cost effective and timely manner. With almost one third of the world's food supply wasted each year and 13% of the world's inhabitants going hungry, this is an incredibly important and timely text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses primarily on the direct and indirect influences of fish trade and food security. It reviews in detail the positive and negative impacts of international fish trade on food security in low-income food-deficit countries. The main findings are that this trade has had a positive effect on food security, both through higher availability of fish for human consumption in developing countries and through higher income generated through trade. The report cautions, however, that sustainable resource management practices are a necessary condition for sustainable international trade. It also highlights the need for free and transparent trade and market policies to ensure that benefits from international trade are enjoyed by all segments of society.
