Book excerpt: The need for manufacturers to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mobile source diesel emissions standards for on-highway light duty and heavy duty vehicles has been the driving force for the control of diesel particulate and NOx emissions reductions. Diesel Particulate Emissions: Landmark Research 1994-2001 contains the latest research and development findings that will help guide engineers to achieve low particulate emissions from future engines. Based on extensive SAE literature from the past seven years, the 45 papers in this book have been selected from the SAE Transactions Journals.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods for the sampling and analysis of diesel particulates have been evaluated. A number of different solvents were utilized for the extraction of diesel particulates. Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) standards spiked on glass-fiber or quartz-fiber filters were found to be oxidized during the sampling of ambient air or exhaust gases. Such degradation was largely reduced by using filters with more inert surfaces, such as Teflon membranes. The results suggest that sample degradation due to gas-BaP reactions requires the presence of a reactive or catalytic medium, such as the glass-fiber filter surface. Such reactions can be minimized with the proper choice of a more inert filter surface such as Teflon. Oxidation of BaP was also observed in diesel extracts during analytical procedures or prolonged storage for several weeks in the dark. The implication of the sampling and analytical artifact problem is a question not only of analytical recovery but also of whether significant biologically active conversion products are produced. Analytical methods to study the extraction efficiency for BaP from diesel particulates are presented. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) are being investigated for the identification and analysis of these species and preliminary results indicate the presence of a number of oxygenated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds, which potentially could be produced by oxidation during sampling and analysis.

Book excerpt: Particulate Matter Science for Policy Makers: A NARSTO Assessment was commissioned by NARSTO, a cooperative public-private sector organization of Canada, Mexico and the United States. It is a concise and comprehensive discussion of the current understanding by atmospheric scientists of airborne particulate matter (PM). Its goal is to provide policy makers who implement air-quality standards with this relevant and needed scientific information. The primary audience for this volume will be regulators, scientists, and members of industry, all of whom have a stake in effective PM management. It will also inform exposure and health scientists, who investigate causal hypotheses of health impacts, characterize exposure, and conduct epidemiological and toxicological studies.

Book excerpt: In 1997, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established regulatory standards to address health risks posed by inhaling tiny particles from smoke, vehicle exhaust, and other sources. At the same time, Congress and the EPA began a multimillion dollar research effort to better understand the sources of these airborne particles, the levels of exposure to people, and the ways that these particles cause disease. To provide independent guidance to the EPA, Congress asked the National Research Council to study the relevant issues. The result was a series of four reports on the particulate-matter research program. The first two books offered a conceptual framework for a national research program, identified the 10 most critical research needs, and described the recommended timing and estimated costs of such research. The third volume began the task of assessing initial progress made in implementing the research program. This, the fourth and final volume, gauged research progress made over a 5-year period on each of the 10 research topics. The National Research Council concludes that particulate matter research has led to a better understanding of the health effects caused by tiny airborne particles. However, the EPA, in concert with other agencies, should continue research to reduce further uncertainties and inform long-term decisions.

It describes the physicochemical properties of the particulate matter, the mechanisms of its formation and its environmental impacts (including those on human beings). It discusses methods for measuring particulate mass and number, including the state-of-the-art in Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS) equipment for measuring the exhaust emissions of both light and heavy-duty vehicles and buses under actual operating conditions. The book presents the authors’ latest investigations into the relations between particulate emission (mass and number) and engine operating parameters, as well as their new findings obtained through road tests performed on various types of vehicles, including those using diesel particulate filter regeneration. The book, which addresses the needs of academics and professionals alike, also discusses relevant European regulations on particulate emissions and highlights selected methods aimed at the reduction of particulate emissions from automobiles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an updated, completely revised version of a previous volume in this series entitled: ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS -- Techniques, applications and quality assurance. The book treats different aspects of environmental analysis such as sample handling and analytical techniques, the applications to trace analysis of pollutants (mainly organic compounds), and quality assurance aspects, including the use of certified reference materials for the quality control of the whole analytical process. New analytical techniques are presented that have been developed significantly over the last 6 years, like solid phase microextraction, microwave-assisted extraction, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometric methods, immunoassays, and biosensors. The book is divided into four sections. The first describes field sampling techniques and sample preparation in environmental matrices: water, soil, sediment and biota. The second section covers the application areas which are either based on techniques, like the use of gas chromatography-atomic emission detection, immunoassays, or coupled-column liquid chromatography, or on specific application areas, like chlorinated compounds, pesticides, phenols, mycotoxins, phytotoxins, radionuclides, industrial effluents and wastes, including mine waste. Validation and quality assurance are described in the third section, together with the interpretation of environmental data using advanced chemometric techniques. The final section reports the use of somewhat advanced analytical methods, usually more expensive, less routinely used or less developed, for the determination of pollutants.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer re-classified diesel particulate matter (DPM) as a known carcinogen. DPM is the material exhausted from diesel engines and poses a threat to human health. The purpose of this study was to identify the extent that DPM is present within the mechanic shop facility and while an employee was operating machinery. This research included industrial hygiene sampling, analysis, and evaluation. Although OSHA does not have a current PEL for diesel particulate matter, MSHA enforces the PEL of 160 ug/m3 for DPM. Data was collected on the basis of area monitoring. The three collected GilAir-3 sample analysis results appeared to be in compliance with the MSHA DPM requirements over an eight-hour period. The GASTEC No. 10 Pump with nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide detector tubes appeared to be in compliance with regulations and the detected exposure levels were below the TLV. The TSI Q-Trak concluded based on the ASHRAE 62.1 standard, the ventilation system in the main shop is not incompliance and the maintenance repair bay is incompliance. Although Company XYZ was primarily incompliance with federal regulations, further controls are recommended to reduce potential for exposure to DPM.
