Book excerpt: Although the standard model of particle physics (SM) is remarkably successful at describing the fundamental particles and their interactions, the mechanism for the breaking of elecroweak symmetry (EWSB) has yet to be confirmed. In the SM, the EWSB sector consists of four scalar fields represented by a single SU(2) complex doublet. Following EWSB, three of the fields are responsible for the generation of the W{sup {+-}} and Z masses, while the fourth is the neutral Higgs boson. At the present time, the Tevatron experiments have set 95% CL exclusion limits on the mass of the SM Higgs boson for the ranges 100 to 109 GeV and 158 to 175 GeV. In addition to these constraints on the SM Higgs boson, the Tevatron experiments have also set limits on neutral and charged Higgs bosons (H{sup {+-}}) in the context of several models beyond the SM. In this review, we discuss searches for charged Higgs bosons performed by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron in the mass range of 80 to 300 GeV.

Book excerpt: We search for the pair production of doubly charged Higgs particles followed by the lepton-flavor violating decay of each Higgs into electron-and-tau and muon-and-tau pairs using 350 pb{sup -1} of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. Separate searches investigate cases where three or four final state leptons are detected, and the limits for each exclusive decay mode reflect the combined results of both searches. Assuming the H{sup {+-}{+-}}{sub L} decays exclusively into like sign electron-and-tau pairs, we set a lower limit on its mass of 114 GeV/c2 at the 95 % confidence level. In the case of exclusive muon-and-tau decays, we set a lower mass limit of 112 GeV/c2 also at the 95% confidence level.

Book excerpt: Over the last years the Tevatron Run-II has extended several limits on Higgs boson masses and coupling which were pioneered during the LEP accelerator operation between 1989 and 2000. Higgs boson searches will also be at the forefront of research at the LHC. This review concisely discusses the experimental constraints set by the CDF and D0 collaborations in winter 2008/2009 at the beginning of the LHC era. Model-independent and model-dependent limits on Higgs boson masses and couplings have been set and interpretations are discussed both in the Standard Model and in extended models. Recently, for the first time the Tevatron excludes a SM Higgs boson mass range (160-170 GeV) beyond the LEP limit at 95% CL. The experimental sensitivities are estimated for the completion of the Tevatron program.

Book excerpt: This working group has investigated Higgs boson searches at the Tevatron and the LHC. Once Higgs bosons are found their properties have to be determined. The prospects of Higgs coupling measurements at the LHC and a high-energy linear ee− collider are discussed in detail within the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM). Recent improvements in the theoretical knowledge of the signal and background processes are presented and taken into account. The residual uncertainties are analyzed in detail. Theoretical progress is discussed in particular for the gluon-fusion processes gg 2!H(+j), Higgs-bremsstrahlung off bottom quarks and the weak vector-boson-fusion (VBF) processes. Following the list of open questions of the last Les Houches workshop in 2001 several background processes have been calculated at next-to-leading order, resulting in a significant reduction of the theoretical uncertainties. Further improvements have been achieved for the Higgs sectors of the MSSM and NMSSM. This report summarizes our work performed before and after the workshop in Les Houches. Part A describes the theoretical developments for signal and background processes. Part B presents recent progress in Higgs boson searches at the Tevatron collider. Part C addresses the determination of Higgs boson couplings, part D the measurement of tan [beta] and part E Higgs boson searches in the VBF processes at the LHC. Part F summarizes Higgs searches in supersymmetric Higgs decays, part G photonic Higgs decays in Higgs-strahlung processes at the LHC, while part H concentrates on MSSM Higgs bosons in the intense-coupling regime at the LHC. Part I presents progress in charged Higgs studies and part J the Higgs discovery potential in the NMSSM at the LHC. The last part K describes Higgs coupling measurements at a 1 TeV linear e+e− collider.

The combined Tevatron cross section upper limits on the production of a standard model Higgs boson are fast approaching the expected standard model values for a wide mass range. Particularly, the Tevatron has now excluded a standard model Higgs boson with a mass of 170 GeV at 95% C.L.
