Panicked, she calls on her estranged ex-husband for backup, but she’s not prepared for the man he’s become—or the unresolved emotions that still linger between them. After his divorce, Drew pulled away from everyone when he lost his eyesight and his job on the police force. Now that he’s realized how much his daughters need their dad, Drew is determined to make things up to them. He’s less sure where he stands with Ria. They had real reasons for ending their marriage, but they’ve both changed during their time apart. And being with her again in the place where they first fell in love brings back memories of all that they once had. Can they overcome their past to reunite their family, this time forever?

Book excerpt: Return to the bestselling Beach House series with Mary Alice Monroe’s tale of the struggles and triumphs of the historic Rutledge family of South Carolina. “Authentic, generous, and heartfelt” (Mary Kay Andrews, New York Times bestselling author), this is an illuminating story of new beginnings, resilience, and one family’s enduring love. Cara Rutledge returns to her Southern home on the idyllic Isle of Palms. Comforting in its familiarity, it is still rife with painful memories. Only through reconnecting with family, friends, and the rhythms of the lowcountry can Cara release the hold of the past and open herself to the possibility of a new career and love. Meanwhile, her niece Linnea, a recent college graduate with an uncertain future, leaves her historic home in Charleston, with all its entitlement and expectations, and heads to her aunt’s beach house. On the island, she is free to join the turtle team, learn to surf, and fall in love. Remembering the lessons of her beloved grandmother, Lovie, the original “turtle lady,” Linnea rediscovers a meaningful purpose to her life and finds the courage she needs to break from tradition. In “this tender and openhearted novel of familial expectations, new boundaries, and the power of forgiveness” (Booklist), three generations of the Rutledge family gather together to find the strength, love, and commitment to break destructive family patterns and to forge new bonds that will endure long beyond one summer reunion.

Book excerpt: In the second novel of “adventure, magic, and mystery” in the Water trilogy, only land-dwellers can save the undersea world, from the author of Ascension (VOYA). Sixteen-year-old Corwin has found himself a wanted man in fifth-century Wales, thanks to his former mentor, a trickster and thief. Reduced to searching for seashells to peddle, he finds an especially shiny one in the tentacles of a beached sea creature, a shell that will leave a mark on his palm, and in his mind. Plagued by visions all his life, Corwin now sees things with new eyes and senses, including the mysterious girl who comes to his rescue when he is captured by royal guards. Her name is Nia, and she, too, has the mark, and a strange story about an undersea world, an evil mermyd, and a lost prince. They have seven days to find the prince before his poison, now inside them both—destroys them all—and their one chance to save the lost city of Atlantis . . . Praise for Ascension “Dalkey’s intriguing marine world brims with descriptions of Atlantis and mermyd life.” —Publishers Weekly “An exotic undersea world is given vivid life . . . A detailed and refreshingly original submerged society, continually revealing deeper layers and hidden crannies that hint at a rich and complex history . . . The exhilarating twists and turns carry readers gasping into a stunning cliffhanger that will leave them clamoring for the next installment.” —Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the industrial revolution and coal mining in the 19th century followed by oil and gas drilling in the 20th century, massive CO2 emissions are responsible for global warming and rising sea levels, which will continue until political and industrial energy decision-makers put in place effective energy transition solutions. In the meantime, younger generations are worried and some even suffer from climate eco-anxiety. This book gives examples of simulated coastal submersion, based on selected examples in the North Sea, the Mediterranean, the English Channel, the Atlantic, and on islands in the Caribbean, the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. Then, to reassure the generations of the 22nd century, this book explains the energy transition, the advantages of green hydrogen in particular, low-carbon architecture, carbon neutrality for large cities and biomimicry. Finally, it proposes solutions for the adaptation of existing coastal settlement, as well as for the construction of new types of housing on stilts and/or floating, for CO2 capture, the adaptation of port infrastructures, multi-purpose offshore platform designs, and floating cities. It is to help today's youth that this book was written, so that future generations don't need to be afraid of the sea; instead of running away, they can continue to live on the coast. Full of illustrations, it includes 73 colour pages presenting 40 maps, 62 photos and 26 graphs or 3D sketches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decoration Day is a late spring or summer tradition that involves cleaning a community cemetery, decorating it with flowers, holding a religious service in the cemetery, and having dinner on the ground. These commemorations seem to predate the post-Civil War celebrations that ultimately gave us our national Memorial Day. Little has been written about this tradition, but it is still observed widely throughout the Upland South, from North Carolina to the Ozarks. Written by internationally recognized folklorist Alan Jabbour and illustrated with more than a hundred photographs taken by Karen Singer Jabbour, Decoration Day in the Mountains is an in-depth exploration of this little-known cultural tradition. The Jabbours illuminate the meanings behind the rituals and reveal how the tradition fostered a grassroots movement to hold the federal government to its promises about cemeteries left behind when families were removed to make way for Fontana Dam and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Richly illustrated and vividly written, Decoration Day in the Mountains presents a compelling account of a widespread and long-standing Southern cultural practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sociologist returns to her suburban Illinois hometown to compare the paths of black and white childhood friends in a “fascinating” mix of study and memoir (Chicago Tribune). Mary Barr thinks a lot about the old photograph on her refrigerator door. In it, she and a dozen or so friends from the Chicago suburb of Evanston sit on a porch. It’s 1974, the summer after they graduated from Nichols Middle School, and what strikes her immediately—aside from the Soul Train–era clothes—is the diversity of the group: boys and girls, black and white, in the variety of poses you’d expect from a bunch of friends on the verge of high school. But the photo also speaks to the history of Evanston, to integration, and to the ways that those in the picture experienced and remembered growing up in a place that many at that time considered to be a racial utopia. In Friends Disappear, Barr goes back to her old neighborhood and pieces together a history of Evanston with a particular emphasis on its neighborhoods, its schools, and its work life. She finds that there is a detrimental myth of integration surrounding Evanston despite bountiful evidence of actual segregation, both in the archives and from the life stories of her subjects. Curiously, the city’s own desegregation plan is partly to blame. The initiative called for the redistribution of students from an all-black elementary school to institutions situated in white neighborhoods. That, however, required busing, and between the tensions it generated and obvious markers of class difference, the racial divide, far from being closed, was widened. Friends Disappear highlights how racial divides limited the life chances of blacks while providing opportunities for whites, and offers an insider’s perspective on the social practices that doled out benefits and penalties based on race—despite attempts to integrate. “Barr’s gripping exploration of the divergent paths friends took away from a childhood snapshot combines the rigor of scholarship with the personal touch of memoir. I have rarely read a book that so effectively illustrates the persistence of racial disparities in the United States with unforgettable, wrenching life stories.” —Amanda Seligman, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Honorable Mention, Midwest Sociological Society Distinguished Book Award

Book excerpt: Provides an understanding of the relationship between social-ecological systems and multilevel governance so that readers can properly deal with hydrometeorological extreme events and hazards Based on field investigations from EU research projects, this book is the first to devote itself to scientific and policy-related knowledge concerning climate change-induced extreme events. It depicts national and international strategies, as well as tools used to improve multilevel governance for the management of hydrometeorological risks. It also demonstrates how these strategies play out over different scales of the decision-making processes. Facing Hydrometeorological Extreme Events: A Governance Issue offers comprehensive coverage of such events as floods, droughts, coastal storms, and wind storms. It showcases real-life success stories of multilevel governance and highlights the individuals involved and the resources mobilized in the decision-making processes. The book starts by presenting a synthesis of hydrometeorological extreme events and their impacts on society. It then demonstrates how societies are organizing themselves to face these extreme events, focusing on the strategies of integration of risk management in governance and public policy. In addition, it includes the results of several EU-funded projects such as CLIMB, STARFLOOD, and INTERREG IVB project DROP. The first book dedicated to hydrometeorological extreme events governance based on field investigations from EU research projects Offers a “multi-hazards” approach—mixing policy, governance, and field investigations’ main outputs Features the results of EU-funded projects addressing hydrometeorological extreme events Part of the Hydrometeorological Extreme Events series Facing Hydrometeorological Extreme Events is an ideal book for upper-graduate students, postgraduates, researchers, scientists, and policy-makers working in the field.
