Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Return again to the scene of the crime and visit the secret hideouts of Nazi saboteurs, anarchist plotters, charlatans, fakers, gangsters, and even a love-sick matron dubbed the "Torso Killer." See up close the murdering matrimonial bluebeard Johann Hoch and probe the unsolved mysteries surrounding the disappearance of candy heiress Helen Brach, the sinking of the "Christmas Tree Ship," and dozens of famous gangland "rubouts." This sequel to the best-selling Return to the Scene of the Crime is a provocative travel guide and road map pointing toward more dark and unexplored corners of the Windy City and its surrounding suburbs. The bizarre, the unexpected, and the offbeat are viewed through a kaleidoscope of colorful Chicago neighborhoods populated by outrageous characters. Crime scenes are presented in "then-and-now" perspective with running commentary on the history of the city. Included in the neighborhood tours is a unique collection of side trips--shorter, lighter historical vignettes that spirit out-of-towners to places of interest in Chicago that are not necessarily infamous. Once you have read this guidebook, you will want to return to the scene of the crime, again and again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Then And Back Again is a memoir written in two parts. It's a book for those who enjoy the trials and tribulations of real life people and feel they can or would like to relate to those whom they are reading about. It's a memoir about only those richest, most interesting details concerning my life...or so I would like to think. It was written to convey those sometimes simple, sometimes complex, but many times emotionally charged experiences I've had during my life. Whether these emotions were elicited by the harsh realities of adversity that I, like many, have faced and overcome, or by the personal triumphs achieved through perseverance, and at times, through sheer willpower alone is for the reader to decide. I will however, try to express them in such a manner as to allow the readers the chance to decide for themselves. We will embark on a journey to then and back again; an odyssey that will encompass a multitude of adventures that are at times disturbing and chaotic, and at other times fascinating and humorous. These adventures will range from overcoming desperation and loneliness as a result of a hidden identity, to the anguish of a best friend and his suicide that served absolutely no purpose nor had any meaning; a suicide that gained nothing for anyone...especially himself. From an insidious monster's theft of a child's innocence, to things that just happen; catching you unaware, then kicks you right square in your pearly whites. The journey will certainly run the gamut of human experiences and emotions, and I will share my life with the reader if they wish to take the ride. And of which I'm also certain, if I do it suitably, then they will vicariously become the reader's adventures as well. The first part is about my life from the time I was about eight years old, when our family home was destroyed by fire to when I was just out of high school and first went out to live on my own. The second part will be about my life from when I was about twenty until I was thirty something. It will begin when my dad and I built my first home until I finally moved from my home town to go off to medical school.

Learn how even flower shops and cathedrals weren't safe from gangland violence, and relive the tragic fire at the Iroquois Theatre, where a "fireproof" curtain was made of cotton and did little to stop the blaze that killed more people than the Great Fire of 1871.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Haunted Illinois takes readers to the Windy City’s wild west, where criminals from Frank Capone to John Wayne Gacy left their mark. Blazing from the West Side, the Great Chicago Fire left nothing but ashy remnants of the developing city, leveling its landscape but certainly not its spirit. While the West Side was home to the infamous O’Leary barn, it was also where news of some of the city’s most gruesome and horrific crimes reverberated throughout the state and across the country. Read about the bloody end of Roger “the Terrible” Touhy, who, although he undoubtedly lived up to his name, met an ill-deserved fate. Troy Taylor also delves into the life of John Wayne Gacy, the depraved man masked by the clown costume, and yet again proves to be a master storyteller and historian of Chicago’s criminal underworld. Includes photos!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A volume in the Cultural Studies Series edited by Samir Dayal An innovative and entertaining look at genre, popular culture, enjoyment, and psychoanalysis. Detective fiction, a category that, broadly defined, runs the gamut from Oedipus Rex to "The Purloined Letter," continues to draw a range of fans and scholars, and to play a pivotal role in popular entertainment, contemporary literature, and psychoanalytic theory. But how do we derive pleasure from reading about or watching a detective’s exploits? Is our enjoyment in the vicarious experience of genius? Or in witnessing the commission of a crime, an equally vicarious experience of violence? Resisting Arrest looks at the detective genre in its many different cultural manifestations, from popular fiction (Christie) to high literature (Eco), from art films (Antonioni) to popular television series (Monk). In each case, Rushing finds that detective stories have less to do with fulfilling our hidden desires, as psychoanalytic explanations have traditionally asserted, than with purposively thwarting them. He argues that the genre is in fact constituted principally by the promises on which it fails to deliver, including the vicarious experience of both genius (readers expecting to play Sherlock Holmes are almost always cast as Watson) and antisocial violence, so that our pleasure is based on what Slavoj Zizek has called "the endless circulation around the always-missed object." Organized around the key ideas that structure the detective genre ("Desire," "Repetition," "Violence"), Resisting Arrest offers a thoroughly new interpretation that will appeal to scholars interested in questions about genre and cinema studies, popular culture, and psychoanalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in one place, Roger M. Sobin has compiled a list of nominees and award winners of virtually every mystery award ever presented. He has also included many of the “best of” lists by more than fifty of the most important contributors to the genre.; Mr. Sobin spent more than two decades gathering the data and lists in this volume, much of that time he used to recheck the accuracy of the material he had collected. Several of the “best of” lists appear here for the first time in book form. Several others have been unavailable for a number of years.; Of special note, are Anthony Boucher’s “Best Picks for the Year.” Boucher, one of the major mystery reviewers of all time, reviewed for The San Francisco Chronicle, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and The New York Times. From these resources Mr. Sobin created “Boucher’s Best” and “Important Lists to Consider,” lists that provide insight into important writing in the field from 1942 through Boucher’s death in 1968.? This is a great resource for all mystery readers and collectors.; ; Winner of the 2008 Macavity Awards for Best Mystery Nonfiction.
