Download or read book Joan Mitchell written by Joan Mitchell and published by Kunsthaus Bregenz. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lots of painters are obsessed with inventing something," American painter Joan Mitchell (1925-92) said in 1986. "When I was young, it never occurred to me to invent. All I wanted to do was paint." Throughout her life Mitchell remained committed to totally autonomous abstract painting, always driven by this fundamental love for the craft and technique of painting. In a career spanning more than four decades, Mitchell's painting style married the dynamic gesture of the Abstract Expressionists, her generational peers, to a keen sensitivity to natural phenomena such as light and water. Characterized by an intense color palette and fresh gestural energy, often applied on a very large scale, Mitchell's paintings both sensually seduce and intellectually stimulate viewers. Published to accompany a large-scale survey of Mitchell's painting, Joan Mitchell: Retrospective draws from Mitchell's entire oeuvre, from her early work of the 1950s to her late, multipart works painted in her last years. Both catalogue and exhibition insist on the importance of biography to any retrospective account of Mitchell's work, and a large part of the exhibition is dedicated to the first extensive public presentation of archival materials from the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Photographs, correspondence and ephemera from the archives are reproduced here, along with an illustrated timeline that relates Mitchell's life to her work. Born in Chicago in 1925, Joan Mitchell studied at Smith College before training at The Art Institute of Chicago. After a fellowship in Paris, Mitchell lived in New York, where she became part of the community of Abstract Expressionist painters. She spent increasing amounts of time in France, eventually moving to Paris in 1959, and remaining there until her death in 1992.
Download or read book Isa Genzken written by Sabine Breitwieser and published by Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isa Genzken is arguably one of the most important and influential female artists of the past 30 years. Genzken's work - which spans sculptures, paintings, photographs, collages, drawings, artist's books, films, installations and public works - has been part of the artistic discourse since she began exhibiting in the mid-1970s, and a new generation of artists has been inspired by her radical inventiveness over the last decade - a period in which she has redefined assemblages. Published to accompany Genzken's first comprehensive retrospective in the USA, this book is the most complete monograph on the artist available in English. It presents Genzken's career in essays exploring the unfolding of her practice from 1973 until today and an illustrated chronological overview of her most important bodies of work and key exhibitions. 0Exhibition: Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA (23.11.2013-10.03.2014) ; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, USA (12.04.-03.08.2014) ; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, USA (14.09.2014-04.01.2015)

Book excerpt: Published on the occasion of Jay DeFeo's (1929-89) first exhibition at Mitchell-Innes & Nash featuring 50 key works spanning the years 1965-89, this volume examines DeFeo's distinctive exploration of visual vocabulary, rich materiality and experimental process across the mediums of painting, drawing, photography and rarely seen photocopy works. The catalogue features two double-page spreads of major paintings: "Lotus Eater" from 1974 and "Tuxedo Junction" from 1965/74, the latter having the distinction of being one of the only remaining works which DeFeo worked on while she worked on "The Rose." Book excerpt: Wayne Thiebaud has long been recognized as one of Americas most prominent modern artists. Probably best known for his straightforward, deadpan, still-life paintings of the 1960s, Thiebaud is identified by his brilliant palette, his luscious handling of paint, and the intensity of light that lends a particularly California flavour to his images. Originally published on the occasion of the artists eightieth birthday, this definitive retrospective brings together 120 of Thiebauds most important paintings, watercolours and pastels, while thoughtful essays by Steven A. Nash and Adam Gopnik trace the course of his career from the 1950s, when he first began to emerge as a significant artist of our times.
