Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual was designed to assist museums in becoming accessible to all individuals, including people with disabilities, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 (ADA). Following an introduction that addresses museum attendance, accessibility, universal design, and different types of disabilities, chapter 1, "ADA Basics for Museums," explains the basics of the law and outlines the legal requirements of museums under the ADA. Chapter 2, "A Strategy for Accessibility," outlines a nine-step strategy of building blocks for achieving ADA compliance. The steps include: (1) accessibility statement; (2) accessibility coordinator, (3) accessibility advisory council; (4) staff training; (5) review of existing facilities and programs; (6) planning for accessibility; (7) promoting and advertising accessibility in the museum; (8) grievance procedures; and (9) ongoing review of access efforts. Chapter 3, "Accessible Facilities and Exhibits," gives a wide range of practical and specific recommendations on how museums can design accessible exhibits and programs. The final chapter, "Content Communication," presents alternative ways that museums can effectively communicate information about the content of their collections to all visitors. A 20-page resources section is provided that includes further sources of information about the ADA. (CR)

Book Synopsis Urban Stormwater Management in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Book Synopsis Building Adaptation by : James Douglas
Download or read book Building Adaptation written by James Douglas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As existing buildings age, nearly half of all construction activity in Britain is related to maintenance, refurbishment and conversions. Building adaptation is an activity that continues to make a significant contribution to the workload of the construction industry. Given its importance to sustainable construction, the proportion of adaptation works in relation to new build is likely to remain substantial for the foreseeable future, especially in the developed parts of the world. Building Adaptation, Second Edition is intended as a primer on the physical changes that can affect older properties. It demonstrates the general principles, techniques, and processes needed when existing buildings must undergo alteration, conversion, extension, improvement, or refurbishment. The publication of the first edition of Building Adaptation reflected the upsurge in refurbishment work. The book quickly established itself as one of the core texts for building surveying students and others on undergraduate and postgraduate built environment courses. This new edition continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to all the key issues relating to the adaptation of buildings. It deals with any work to a building over and above maintenance to change its capacity, function or performance.
Book Synopsis Planning and Engineering Guidelines for the Seismic Retrofitting of Historic Adobe Structures by : E. Leroy Tolles
Download or read book Planning and Engineering Guidelines for the Seismic Retrofitting of Historic Adobe Structures written by E. Leroy Tolles and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2003-03-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adobe, or mud brick, has been widely used as a building material in the American Southwest, including California. The vulnerability of many original adobe structures to damage or destruction from earthquakes has been of great concern. The guidelines presented here address the practical aspects of this problem and represent the culmination of 12 years of research and testing on the seismic retrofitting of adobe buildings. These guidelines can assist in the planning of seismic retrofitting projects consistent with both conservation principles and established public policy.
Book Synopsis Shock Waves by : Stephane Hallegatte
Download or read book Shock Waves written by Stephane Hallegatte and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ending poverty and stabilizing climate change will be two unprecedented global achievements and two major steps toward sustainable development. But the two objectives cannot be considered in isolation: they need to be jointly tackled through an integrated strategy. This report brings together those two objectives and explores how they can more easily be achieved if considered together. It examines the potential impact of climate change and climate policies on poverty reduction. It also provides guidance on how to create a “win-win†? situation so that climate change policies contribute to poverty reduction and poverty-reduction policies contribute to climate change mitigation and resilience building. The key finding of the report is that climate change represents a significant obstacle to the sustained eradication of poverty, but future impacts on poverty are determined by policy choices: rapid, inclusive, and climate-informed development can prevent most short-term impacts whereas immediate pro-poor, emissions-reduction policies can drastically limit long-term ones.
