Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-Ny), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, announced today that the Committee will hold a hearing onS. 1780, the Retirement Protection Act of 1993, the Administrations proposal to improve pension plan funding and limit the exposure of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (Pbgc). The hearing will begin at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, June 15, 1994, in room Sd-215 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. "Pension underfunding is a serious issue," Senator Moynihan said in announcing the hearing. "The Committee looks forward to hearing from the Administration on its proposal to strengthen pension funding requirements to assure retirement security for workers and retirees and keep the Pbgc on sound footing." A very good morning to our distinguished administration witnesses and to our guests and to the panel that will follow. This morning we are going to hold an initial hearing on S. 1780, a bill to amend the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 and the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide security for workers, to improve pension plan funding, to limit growth in insurance exposure, to protect the single employer plan termination insurance program, and for other purposes. This is an administration bill drafted by our most distinguished Secretary of Labor with the collaboration of the Department of the Treasury, represented by Hon. Leslie Samuels, the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy, so well and favorably known to this committee; and by Hon.
