Book excerpt: In one of my books - "Who Moved the Stone?" I had promised to deal with the anomaly, where believers were reading simple English, yet were so conditioned that they were understanding exactly the opposite of what they were reading. The following story from real life will not only illustrate the point but will also elucidate our present case - "Resurrection or Resuscitation" I was about to leave for the Transvaal (South Africa) on a lecture tour, so I phoned my friend Hafiz Yusuf Dadoo of Standerton, informing him of my impending visit, as well as to inquire whether he needed anything from Durban. He said that as he was taking up Hebrew, I should try and obtain a Bible in the Hebrew language with a translation in English side by side. I went to the "Bible House" in Durban.

The whole teachings of Christianity either rest or fall on the truth or the untruth of the death of Jesus on the cross and his subsequent Resurrection. Millions of people around the world base their faith upon these Christian Church teachings, so it is only right that the texts are questioned and challenged. Did Jesus really die on the cross? Was he really resurrected from death three days later, as the canonical gospels tell us? This is what this book attempts to investigate and to separate the truth from the fiction. And in challenging and questioning, who knows what we may indeed find? Certainly, at the very least, a lot for enthusiastic discussion! The findings often leave us outside of our comfort zone! But we need to get the truth in order to progress on our spiritual path. The truth will out, and the truth will set us free! So let us find that truth! Resurrection or Resuscitation? What really happened in that tomb?

Book excerpt: WHO MOVED THE STONE?" or "who ROLLED away the stone?" (Mark 16:3) is a Question, which has worried theologians for the past two thousand years. Mr. Frank Morison, a prominent Bible scholar, tried to nail down this ghost(s) in a book bearing the same title as this tract. Between 1930 and 1975 his book has gone through ELEVEN editions. Through all his 192 pages of conjectures he failed to answer, "WHO MOVED THE STONE?" (Faber and Faber, London). On page 89 of his book, he writes, "We are left, therefore, with the problem of the vacant tomb unsolved" and proceeds to advance SIX hypotheses, very nearly knocking the proverbial nail on the head with his FIRST supposition, i.e. "THAT JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA SECRETLY REMOVED THE BODY TO A MORE SUITABLE RESTING PLACE". After confessing that this Joseph "might himself have removed it for private reasons to another place, is one which seems to carry considerable weight

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an attempt to search for a theology to underpin the ethics of resuscitation. Because reference is sometimes made to resuscitation being attempted in the Bible, the Search examines the Old and New Testament for instances of resuscitation or revival from the dead which may shed light on such theology. However, it is also contended that,in the time before Christ, it was life in this world which was prized, and that it was only towards the end of the Old Testament era there was the beginning of a perception of resurrection after death, to a different sphere of existence. Following the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ it was eternal life that was to be the goal of living. This, it is contended,is why there is a dearth of material in Christian Tradition on any reference to a value of revival to life in this world. It is also contended that, in Christian Tradition, up until approximately the last century, there is always a fundamental acknowledgment of God as the Author of life and the Arbiter of death. However, in modern times the emphasis which has been laid on the autonomy of the individual is encouraging people to replace and edge out God, thus twisting the first strand of theological underpinning of the ethics out of recognition. An additional strand of theology is uncovered, in that the biblical recorded resuscitations were all carried out for some purposwe, or for the benefit of someone, other than the person being revived, although the person themselves may have derived some indirect benefit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pivotal relation of the resurrection to the Christian system has been generally acknowledged. It is the cardinal fact of Christianity. In this book, the author delves into the "how" and "why" of key points of the Resurrection, a precursor to the Christian's resurrection. He distinguishes between a "resurrection," and a "resuscitation," showing that Lazarus was resuscitated, while Jesus was resurrected. He counters the error of reincarnation, and discusses why this is incompatible with the Scriptures. Dealing with skeptics, he thoroughly refutes the major theories that deny the resurrection: the Theory of Fancy, the Theory of Fraud, and the Theory of Phantom. One of the most significant points he brings out is that that the angel rolled away the stone from the door of the tomb to let the outsiders in, not to let Jesus out. In that tomb were evidences of the resurrection which it was desirable the disciples should see. The winding sheets spoke as eloquently and convincingly of entrance into new life, as the empty shell of the chrysalis speaks of the flight of the butterfly. Lazarus brought the wrappings that were [wound] about him with him when he came from the grave. Furthermore, he converses the accounts of the Resurrection in each of the gospels, and concludes with a homily on the power of the Resurrection and its first-fruits for believers. Homage is paid by the editor to the author's son, a WWI flying ace who was killed in action defending a fellow-pilot. Certainly, his son's heroic death must have been very much on his mind, and what comfort meditating on these truths must have brought the author.

Does this flesh we carry now rise or is it something other? What does our modern knowledge of the world contribute to our understanding? Brian Schmisek traces developments in the Christian understanding of resurrection, explores the topic in light of biblical data, and mines scientific insights. What results is a synthesis that expresses the essence of the apostolic kerygma in modern terms. Schmisek's impressive combination of solid theological and biblical scholarship with an accessible and welcoming style makes this book an excellent resource for adult education groups, deacon formation classes, undergraduates, and other nonspecialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006, scientist Richard Dawkins published a blockbuster bestseller, The God Delusion. This atheist manifesto sparked a furious reaction from believers, who have responded with numerous books of their own. By pitting science against religion, however, this debate overlooks what science can tell us about religion. According to evolutionary psychologist Matt J. Rossano, what science reveals is that religion made us human. In Supernatural Selection, Rossano presents an evolutionary history of religion. Neither an apologist for religion nor a religion-basher, he draws together evidence from a wide range of disciplines to show the valuable--even essential--adaptive purpose served by systematic belief in the supernatural. The roots of religion stretch as far back as half a million years, when our ancestors developed the motor control to engage in social rituals--that is, to sing and dance together. Then, about 70,000 years ago, a global ecological crisis drove humanity to the edge of extinction. It forced the survivors to create new strategies for survival, and religious rituals were foremost among them. Fundamentally, Rossano writes, religion is a way for humans to relate to each other and the world around them--and, in the grim struggles of prehistory, it offered significant survival and reproductive advantages. It emerged as our ancestors' first health care system, and a critical part of that health care system was social support. Religious groups tended to be far more cohesive, which gave them a competitive advantage over non-religious groups, and enabled them to conquer the globe. Rather than focusing on one aspect of religion, as many theorists do, Rossano offers an all-encompassing approach that is rich with surprises, insights, and provocative conclusions.

Book excerpt: In 2001, as Reinhard Bonnke debated whether or not to move his ministry to America, he did something he had never done before: he prayed for a sign to confirm that God truly was calling him to go to America. God was about to answer that prayer. A few days later, a woman brought her husband to the Nigerian church where Bonnke was preaching, in hopes that his partially embalmed body would be raised from the dead after three days in a coffin. Although Bonnke was unaware of this and never even prayed for the man, the woman’s husband, lying in the church basement, began to breathe again during the sermon. In front of thousands of witnesses, this man, who still couldn’t move because of rigor mortis, was raised back to life. After his message, Bonnke was besieged by a crowd yelling, “He’s breathing! He’s breathing!” This incredible miracle, now detailed for the first time, is part of a movement of God, birthed in a small African church and stretching around the world to America. It is the beginning of a work of God that will confirm His word to Bonnke: “America shall be saved.”

Book excerpt: Annotation In this intriguing discussion of Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, Dale Martin contends that Paul's various disagreements with the Corinthians were the result of a fundamental conflict over the ideological construction of the human body (and hence the church as the body of Christ). This led to differing opinions on a variety of theological viewpoints--including the role of rhetoric and philosophy in a hierarchical society, the eating of meat sacrificed to idols, prostitution, sexual desire and marriage, and the resurrection of the body.
