Book excerpt: This book reflects on methods of determining the exact solutions for the velocity and shear stress corresponding to motion of Oldroyd-B and second grade fluids in different geometric scenarios. Retarded and advanced quantum Green's functions have also been used to derive new forms of kadanoff-Baym equations for a system of interacting particles in Quantum Statistical Mechanics to analyze the question to what extent Landau-Silin kinetic equations for Neutral Fermi liquid take into account quickly varying disturbances. This book introduces new results in the area of fluid dynamics and Quantum Fermi liquids.

Book excerpt: In conventional metals, various transport coefficients are scaled according to the quasiparticle relaxation time, \tau, which implies that the relaxation time approximation (RTA) holds well. However, such a simple scaling does not hold in many strongly correlated electron systems, reflecting their unique electronic states. The most famous example would be cuprate high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs), where almost all the transport coefficients exhibit a significant deviation from the RTA results. To better understand the origin of this discrepancy, we develop a method for calculating various transport coefficients beyond the RTA by employing field theoretical techniques. Near the magnetic quantum critical point, the current vertex correction (CVC), which describes the electron-electron scattering beyond the relaxation time approximation, gives rise to various anomalous transport phenomena. We explain anomalous transport phenomena in cuprate HTSCs and other metals near their magnetic or orbital quantum critical point using a uniform approach. We also discuss spin related transport phenomena in strongly correlated systems. In many d- and f-electron systems, the spin current induced by the spin Hall effect is considerably greater because of the orbital degrees of freedom. This fact attracts much attention due to its potential application in spintronics. We discuss various novel charge, spin and heat transport phenomena in strongly correlated metals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the concepts used to understand transport phenomena, which pervade all of physics. The focus is on the application of the statistical principles of kinetic theory to non-equilibrium situations, not only in the gas phase but also regarding plasmas, liquids, and solids. These powerful techniques are applied within the framework of the Boltzmann equation to a range of systems. The text is aimed at postgraduates and theoreticians, and assumes familiarity with the basic concepts of statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics. Beginning with the dilute classical gas, the authors then consider electron conduction in normal metals, insulators, superconductors and quantum liquids, and Bose liquids.

Book excerpt: The second International Symposium on Quantum Fluids and Solids came to pass during 23-27 Jan. 1977 as the fourth and con cluding part of the seventeenth consecutive running of the Sanibel Symposium Series. With approximately 120 participants from eleven countries (including, for the first time, the USSR), we found it easy to obtain a selection of papers which was fairly comprehen sive. Indeed, our problem was an embarrassment of riches; in spite of our solemn vows not to crowd the schedule, we ended up with an intense program! By far, the majority of the papers pre sented are represented in this volume. We are indebted to many persons and organizations for their contributions to the Symposia. First, we thank Prof. Per-Olov Lowdin, Director of the Quantum Theory Project and originator of the Sanibel Symposia. Without his patient, indulgent cooperation our task would have been vastly more difficult. We are grateful to Prof. F. Eugene Dunnam, Chairman of the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, for providing Departmental support of our initial or ganlzlng expenses. Approximately one-half of the total cost of the Symposium was borne by a joint grant from the National Science Foundation and the U. S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research. We thank the program officers, Dr. C. Satterthwaite and Dr. D.

Book excerpt: This book originated from a course given at the Univcrsidad Aut6noma of Madrid in the Spring of 1994 and in the Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 1995. The goal of these courses is to give the non-specialist an introduction to some old and new ideas in the field of strongly correlated systems, in particular the problems posed by the high-1~ superconducting materials. As theoretical physicists, our starting viewpoint to address the problem of strongly correlat ed ferlnion systems and related issues of modern condensed matter physics ·is the renormalization group approach applied both to quantU111 field theory and statistical physics. In recent years this has become not only a powerful tool for retrieving the essential physics of interacting systems but also a link between theoretical physics and modern condensed matter physics. Furthermore, once we have this common background for dealing with apparently different prob lems, we discuss more specific topics and even phenomenological aspects of the field. In doing so we have tried to make the exposition clear and simple, with out entering into technical details but focusing ill the fundamental physics of the phenomena under study. Therefore ,ve expect that our experience ll1ay have some value to other people entering this fascinating field. We have divided these notes into three parts and each part into chapters, which correspond roughly to one or two lectures. Part I, Chaps. 1-2 (A. H. V.

Book excerpt: The increasing emphasis and importance of mesoscopic systems for tomorrow's high-tech electronics industry as well as a growing research interest in the subject has given rise to the need for a modern introductory text at the graduate level. This book aims to provide the necessary theory and tools to carry out research into the various aspects of the subject. It starts with a chapter on the theory of quantum transport giving a survey of the basic theory used in transport phenomena including scattering, linear response theory, weak localization, conductance fluctuations and the Landauer-B?ttiker formalism. Various aspects of chaos in quantum systems as well as dissipative quantum systems are discussed. Other topics of importance such as single electron tunneling, driven bistable systems, quantized transport and electron liquids are also covered in detail. Graduate students as well as newcomers to this exciting and expanding field will find this work useful to adopt the necessary theory and overview required to go deeper into the original literature and to carry out research.

Book excerpt: Theory of Quantum Fluids is a concise report on the microscopic description of liquid 4He and liquid 3He in the physical density range using simple forms of the potential function between pairs of neutral atoms and the properties of the ground states and limited ranges of low excited states. The monograph covers the properties of the radial distribution function and the three-particle distribution particle; the classical sound field and the correspondence principle; paired phonon states in the free- phonon approximation; the uniform limit and the charged boson system; and the microscopic theory of a single 3He atom in the 4He liquid. Theoretical and experimental physicists will find the book very interesting.

Book excerpt: The study of quantum fluids in three dimensions has been an important area for many years as it embraces Bose-Einstein condensation, superfluidity and macroscopic quantisation. These are fundamental aspects of physics which can be studied in liquid 4He. In contrast, quantum fluids in two dimension is more recent and less developed. Nevertheless it has shown many interesting phenomena including a rich variety of phases and the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Intermediate between these dimensions are the restricted geometries of micro porous materials into which He may be introduced. The main quantum materials considered are 4He, 3He, D2, H2, H and electrons on the surface of 4He. The superfluid phases of 3He were excluded, e~cept for superfluid film flow, as 3He involves a separate set of problems. These proceedings arise from a lively Advanced Research Workshop on Excitations in Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Quantum Fluids held in Exeter 10-15 August 1990. Fifty scientists took part and each provided a written contribution. Perhaps it is a testimony to the discussions that several papers were revised by the authors after the meeting. The order of the chapters is the same as the presentations at the workshop. This arrangement starts with 4He in three dimensions which establishes a base from which the two dimensional properties can be viewed. At the end of each section there is a report on the discussion session. These are interesting and useful chapters as they clarify points made in the papers and define the boundary of current understanding.
