Book excerpt: Excerpt from Results of Higher Criticism: As Applied to the Old Testament The aim of this book is merely to sum up the more general results at which the critics have arrived in their study of the Old Testament, and present those results in popular form for busy people. Where authorities disagree, those have been followed which pursue the scientific method of historical research most consistently. The work has been done hurriedly and at intervals, in the midst of many other labors, and its defects will be apparent - not more apparent, it is hoped, than the purpose to help its readers into a clearer religious light and give them a deeper confidence in the revelation which God makes to the developing moral sense of humanity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical criticism, originally known as Higher criticism of the Bible, got started throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. At that time, Protestant scholars attacked the Bible: an intellectual, academic attack. They devised a method of studying the Bible that became known as higher criticism and now biblical criticism. These Bible critics taught that most of the Bible contained legend and myth. Some even claimed that Jesus never existed. For the liberal-moderate Bible scholar then and now, the Word of God, the Bible has become the word of man, and a very chaotic, distorted word at that. The modern-day liberal-moderate Bible scholar says that much of the Bible “is just wrong.” This thinking is the result of biblical criticism. Biblical higher criticism is conjectural and uncertain, doubtful in the extreme. Today, these Bible scholars who make up most of our seminaries explain the Bible accounts of miracles as myths, legends, or folk tales. They do not even entertain the idea that there is the possibility that they actually occurred. This viewpoint is subjective and gives no reliable reason to reject the Bible as inspired, fully inerrant, authentic, and trustworthy. Biblical criticism is highly defective, and its centuries-long assault on the Bible has not proven that the Bible is not the Word of God. Many conservative Christians have been doing their best to defend God’s Word. Herein, THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH puts Biblical Criticism on trial, judging their claims as subjective (based on or influenced by personal feelings or opinions), not objective (factual, actual, real, empirical, verifiable) in biblical studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skeptics & critics everywhere say the Bible isn’t trustworthy. University courses evolutionary science & the acceptance of relative values have convinced many people - even some Christians - that the Bible isn’t 100% accurate & authoritative. What evidence from history archaeology science & logic proves them wrong? An inerrant Bible is the cornerstone for knowing the character and nature of God’s Word & the salvation it offers thru the death & resurrection of Jesus Christ. This book reveals the unjustified biases of Bible criticism; verifies the accuracy & authenticity of ancient biblical texts; shows why the evidence for biblical authority is superior to critics’ allegations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first critical biography of J. Gresham Machen, examining the full arc of his intellectual career J. Gresham Machen is known as a conservative hero of the fundamentalist-modernist controversy. But was he always so staunchly antimodernist? In this sweeping new biography, Richard E. Burnett examines the whole of Machen’s life and career—from his early years at Princeton, to his experience in the First World War, to his founding of Westminster Theological Seminary . Burnett pays special attention to topics that have received little attention from biographers, like Machen’s crisis of faith and his support for historical criticism of Scripture. Incorporating all of Machen’s major works as well as his previously unpublished private correspondence, Burnett crafts a nuanced narrative of Machen’s intellectual journey from enthusiastic modernist to stalwart conservative. Nuanced and thorough, Machen’s Hope will challenge scholars’ assumptions about Machen and his dynamic era.
