Book excerpt: Scientific Computation with Result Verification has been a persevering research topic at the Institute for Applied Mathematics of Karlsruhe University for many years. A good number of meetings have been devoted to this area. The latest of these meetings was held from 30 September to 2 October, 1987, in Karlsruhe; it was co-sponsored by the GAMM Committee on "Computer Arithmetic and Scientific Computation". - - This volume combines edited versions of selected papers presented at this confer ence, including a few which were presented at a similar meeting one year earlier. The selection was made on the basis of relevance to the topic chosen for this volume. All papers are original contributions. In an appendix, we have supplied a short account of the Fortran-SC language which permits the programming of algorithms with result verification in a natural manner. The editors hope that the publication of this material as a Supplementum of Computing will further stimulate the interest of the scientific community in this important tool for Scientific Computation. In particular, we would like to make application scientists aware of its potential. The papers in the second chapter of this volume should convince them that automatic result verification may help them to design more reliable software for their particular tasks. We wish to thank all contributors for adapting their manuscripts to the goals of this volume. We are also grateful to the Publisher, Springer-Verlag of Vienna, for an efficient and quick production.

But . . . catechize on what and how? A cursory look at a Baltimore Catechism, the 1950-60s field manual for Catholics, reveals a 30-page segment, “Catechism of the Mass,” immersing students in liturgical details. A cursory look at current Catholic curricula reveals a paucity of information on Mass ranging from a few paragraphs in texts for schools and homeschool to “take home” trifolds for CCD, RCIA, etc. Is Mass that important? Did you know Mass . . . Is the only sacrifice perfect, pleasing, and acceptable to God? Is the most sacred function of the Church, surpassing all others in efficacy? Is the Church’s greatest prayer? Is the Church’s #1 effort to save souls? Is the same sacrifice Christ made on the Cross? Is the perfect answer to prayer as it brings mercy and salvation Christ won for us? Is required attendance every Sunday and six Holy Days a year but Communion only once? Is the Source and Summit of our Faith? Is Heaven on Earth? Seemingly, Mass is the answer to everything integral to Catholicism. Why is it not taught in Catholic education settings? How do we reverse the tide? Catholics must re-assess school, CCD, RCIA, adult formation, school and homeschool catechesis to make space for a deep dive into Mass. To fulfill the need, I submit a book series, “Catechism Curriculum for Catholic Homeschool,” which includes a 163-page text accompanied by a workbook with fifty-one lesson reviews containing 1,600+ questions. They cover a wide range of topics, many of which address ties between political and moral philosophy and what the law does and should provide. A broad general theme is that in all these domains, what really is the wisest approach to difficult circumstances often depends on the particular issues involved and their context. Both judges and scholars too often rely on abstract general formulations to provide answers. A notable example in political philosophy was the suggestion of the great and careful scholar, John Rawls, that laws should be based exclusively on public reason. The essays explain that given uncertainty of what people perceive as the line between public reason and their religion convictions, the inability of public reason to resolve some difficulty questions, such as what we owe to higher animals, and the feeling of many that their religious understanding should count, urging exclusive reliance on public reason is not a viable approach. Other essays show similar problems with asserted bases for legal interpretations and the content of provisions such as the First Amendment.
