Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconstruction of higher education in Australia at the end of the 1980s radically reshaped many existing universities. However, in South Australia, Dawkins's educational changes brought into existence an entirely new university, the University of South Australia, formed by the merging of two former institutions from the advanced education sector, the South Australian Institute of Technology and the South Australian College of Advanced Education. This volume first traces the unsuccessful path taken by those institutions to form partnerships with the two existing universities in South Australia. Having been rejected by Flinders and the University of Adelaide respectively the two former colleges joined forces and began life as a new university in a new system of higher education. Lacking research funding and access to higher degree students in its previous life, the new university nevertheless had considerable strengths which suited the new system, particularly in equity and links with business and the community. The story of the University of South Australia is one of the most successful of the Dawkins changes. After a shaky start its rapid rise to prominence in South Australia and beyond allows it to be truly seen as 'a new kid on the block' in Australian higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhancing Quality in Transnational Higher Education explores issues and questions concerning the provision of quality teaching and learning in university programs delivered ‘offshore’. The focus of the book is on what makes for a good and successful education in the context of transnational programs of Australian universities. The book traces research by the authors into the ‘lived experiences’ of teachers and learners engaged in Australian transnational education across a broad range of universities, locations, programs and models of delivery. The enormous trend towards the delivery of university programs across national borders is compelling evidence of the internationalization of higher education in the 21st century. Universities worldwide are challenged to provide quality assurance for this new kind of education. For universities, this book offers principles to enhance existing frameworks for assuring the quality of learning and teaching in university offshore education programs. The book will also be of particular interest to academics of higher education institutions who are involved in the policy and practice of transnational education.

It is based on a comparative research project (spring 2013-spring 2015) investigating the phenomena of mergers involving higher education institutions across the Nordic countries – Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The study involved close to 30 scholars from the region, and aimed at shedding critical light on, and providing novel contributions around, the following key aspects: Conceptual and theoretical approaches – strengths and limitations - towards the study of the phenomena of mergers in higher education; Historical developments, leading to significant structural changes in the domestic higher education landscape, and, in turn, how mergers have been used as a policy/institutional mechanism to foster adaptation to a new external environment at the local, national, regional and international levels; The complex dynamics inherent to merger processes by undertaking an in-depth investigation of a series of selected case studies, with a particular focus on the “black-box” associated with the implementation process; The implications of the findings as regards future policy and strategic endeavours, theory development and future research agenda.

This book explores the restructuring movement, with a particular emphasis on how decentralisation of power has affected the quality of education. It provides a broad and international picture of educational reform.

Book excerpt: This international handbook offers an in-depth study of the development of primary Technology (or Design and Technology) education worldwide. It is unique in that it focuses on the way in which the building blocks for this subject have been established– providing much needed research and information for those involved with secondary education and beyond to draw on. The inclusion of Technology education into primary curricula has gathered momentum for the last two decades as its importance and relevance to children’s lives has been realised by educators. This handbook offers a detailed insight into the many and varied ways in which countries have incorporated the subject into children’s primary school experiences, and issues that have arisen during its implementation. The authors all work in the field of primary technology education and have been actively involved in curriculum development and research in their own countries. The first part of the book is devoted to the introduction, the development and implementation of Technology education into the primary curricula of countries worldwide. Reasons for this movement, successes and barriers to development are discussed and speculation about the future of Technology education is reflected upon. The second part of the book relates to issues that have arisen as the subject has grown over the last twenty years, and consideration needs to be given to these if future successes are to be achieved. Classroom practice including designing and ICT, teacher education, enterprise, sustainability and indigenous technology are all reflected upon and support the notion of technology as a valued and valuable part of the primary curriculum This book should be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students, practitioners, researchers, curriculum developers, policy makers and professional development providers who are involved with, and have an interest in, primary technology education worldwide.

Book excerpt: When online learning began more than two decades ago, many universities envisioned the creation of international student markets, but this has only recently become a reality. The emergence of a global economy, advances in technology, increased market competition, reduced funding, and the growing desire for degrees from internationally recognized universities have created opportunities that promote transnational degrees.Transnational Distance Learning and Building New Markets for Universities presents the opportunities, methods, issues, and risks involved in extending university education across national borders. It is important to understand cultural, financial, and legal issues, as well as management approaches, academic delivery options, and business considerations needed to create quality programs that are marketable and cost effective in reaching emerging international markets. The purpose of the book is to review how to reach emerging international markets, increase access to education, and do so at a profit.
