Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the restoration of teeth retained through root canal treatment, from the perspective of adhesive dentistry. The challenge of adhesion to root dentin is first explained and guidance provided on assessment of the restorability of endodontically treated teeth. The types of prefabricated passive post are then described in detail. The advantages and disadvantages of each type are outlined, with identification of the factors that influence post selection. Further topics include the ferrule effect, evidence‐based clinical applications of fiber posts and new methods to lute fiber posts to the root canal without dentin adhesives. In addition, frequent myths are identified and dispelled. All aspects are illustrated with clinical and laboratory images, diagrams and high-resolution electron microscopy photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers readers a pragmatic approach to endodontic therapy for permanent molars, based on up-to-date evidence. All chapters were written by experts in the field, and focus on preparation for treatment, vital pulp therapy, access cavity preparation, root canal shaping, outcome assessment, retreatment, apical surgery, and specific aspects of restorations for root canal-treated molars. The role of micro-CT data in visualizing canal anatomy is compared to cone beam CT, and detailed information on current clinical tools, such as irrigation adjuncts and engine-driven preparation tools is provided. Important steps are illustrated in clinical photographs and radiographs, as well as by schematic diagrams. Tables and check boxes highlight key points for special attention, and clinical pitfalls. Guiding references are provided. Performing molar endodontics is often a daunting prospect, regardless of the practice setting. This is where “Molar Endodontics” is an ideal source of guidance for practitioners. Special devices and recent innovations in apex locators and nickel-titanium instruments have, however, made procedures significantly easier and more practical for non-specialists. This book will help conscientious clinicians to master molar endodontics with well-described and established clinical methods.

Book excerpt: This book serves as a clinical guide to help the practitioner improve endodontic treatment outcomes. It focuses on the various factors affecting the prognosis of endodontic treatments and on their impact on short-term and long-term results. The text incorporates up-to-date knowledge, techniques and treatment protocols. Each chapter has been carefully chosen to address either foundational knowledge or a select aspect of endodontic treatment. The authors analyze the knowledge accumulated from a large number of outcome studies and provide the reader with a critical appraisal indicating the strengths and weaknesses of those studies. This information is then used to make recommendations on how to predict the outcome of the intended treatment. The authors emphasize that the endodontic prognosis is a multifactorial phenomenon, underscoring how various factors, singularly and in combination, influence the treatment outcome. Readers are provided with tools to successfully assess the prognosis of the proposed treatment at the outset and to execute the planned treatment focused on optimal outcome.

Book excerpt: Endodontic treatment saves the tooth from extraction but only adequate restoration will reinstate it as a long-term functioning member of the mouth. The restoration of a tooth by root canal treatment is of limited value unless the crown of tooth is satisfactorily restored. The manner in which a root canal filled tooth is restored is therefore considerable importance. The restoration of endodontically treated tooth is complicated by the fact that much or all of the coronal tooth structure which normally would be used in the retention of the restoration has been destroyed by caries, previous restorations, trauma, and the endodontic access preparation itself. The endodontically treated tooth is a unique subset of teeth requiring restoration because of several factors such as dehydrated dentin, decreased, decreased structural integrity and impaired neurosensory feed back mechanism when compared to a vital tooth. However, the treatment goal must be based upon a multitude of factors specific for each patient, so that the strategic architectural aspects that have/greatest impact on the ultimate strength of the pulpless tooth can be restored/reinforced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a state of the art clinical guide to contemporary materials and techniques for the restoration of individual teeth and implants. It fully reflects the important developments in the field over the past 15 years, including in particular the shift away from wholesale use of crowns towards adhesive dentistry and less invasive extra-coronal restorations. The book opens by considering the principles and evidence base relating to the longevity of restorations of teeth and implants. Importantly, it explains how to ensure “a healthy start” and manage future risks. Material choice and aesthetic issues are then discussed, before all aspects of the planning and provision of extra-coronal restorations are examined in depth. The coverage also includes the adaptation of crowns to existing partial dentures. In line with modern dental education, each chapter begins with clinically relevant learning objectives, and helpful clinical tips are highlighted. The book will be of value for senior dental undergraduates, postgraduates, and practicing dentists and its scientific content will be of interest to dental academics.

Book excerpt: Written by a group of renowned experts three decades after the publication of the last comprehensive book on this topic, this much-needed book has a wealth of evidence-based information on all facets of the restoration of pulpless teeth. With a better understanding of the factors that can influence the prognosis of severely compromised teeth, the approach to treating these teeth has evolved, and this text offers a well-balanced, contemporary approach to treatment planning. Traditional principles and techniques are reviewed and reinforced, along with modern materials and methods, all with a firm foundation in the best available scientific evidence and with an emphasis on clinical studies. Many of the chapters provide comprehensive, step-by-step descriptions of technical procedures with accompanying illustrations to guide the reader through every stage of restoring pulpless teeth, including fabrication of various foundation restorations, cementation techniques, and methods of provisionalization. Preprosthetic adjunctive procedures, such as surgical crown lengthening, repair of perforations, and orthodontic measures, are also described and illustrated. For years to come, this text will remain a definitive reference for specialists involved in the restoration of pulpless teeth or engaged in planning treatment for structurally compromised teeth.

The ultimate guide to dental trauma, the manual preserves its uniquely usable and reader-friendly format, demonstrating step-by-step treatment protocols for commonly occurring traumatic injuries. Several new sections have been added to expand the number of clinical scenarios, describing soft tissue injuries associated with dental trauma, showing how decoronation of ankylosed anterior teeth in adolescents can preserve the alveolar process for later implant placement, and identifying predictors for pulpal and periodontal ligament healing complications as well as for tooth loss. A unique feature of the new edition is the accompanying DVD which presents computer animations of all trauma scenarios, as well as links to the internet-based interactive Dental Trauma Guide to predict healing complications for individual trauma scenarios. KEY FEATURES Written by international authorities on dental trauma Demonstrates treatment protocols in a clear step-by-step format Illustrated throughout with high-quality color images and diagrams Includes more sections to expand number of clinical scenarios Accompanied by a new DVD of trauma scenario animations REVIEWS OF PREVIOUS EDITIONS The text is clear and well written and well referenced ... The chapters on diagnosis of periodontal and pulpal complications are particularly helpful as this is a difficult area for many clinicians. The manual will serve as an excellent reference for practitioners and dental students who have a good working knowledge of dental traumatology. Journal of Orthodontics Overall, this book is excellent and I believe would be an essential member of a dentist’s library. It is the sort of book that can be quickly read, and information and guidance can be located easily when the need arises. The price makes the book very affordable and I wholeheartedly recommend it as an essential reference source for the general dentist and dental student. Book excerpt: Currently there is no reason, in most cases of cavitated caries lesions, to remove affected tissue. This book presents evidence-based research on the topic and provides assessments of diagnostic devices. It offers new insights into how a dentine carious cavity can be managed by either tissue removal or restoration. Methods for preserving dental tissue are presented and ample evidence highlights the need to seal with a quality restorative material. An update on how to conduct a randomized clinical trial is followed by a chapter on agreed upon terminology for supporting improved communication among oral health professionals around the world. This is a must-read for general practitioners, restorative specialists, dental students, and oral hygienists/therapists.
