Abundant, fulfilling life in the kingdom of God often seems but a distant speck on the horizon of our daily lives. Yet that speck can immediately become your daily reality when you enter that which Jesus has kept for the people of God: a life of rest. A resting life is a fulfilled life. A resting life is a productive life. A resting life is a peaceful life. A resting life is free to love and be loved. But just what is Biblical rest, and how can our modern life seamlessly unite with this rest? In Resting Life: Jesus' Rest for the Busy or Burdened Believer, Erika Mathews tackles this question and addresses the conjunction of rest with practical areas such as fruitfulness, prayer, meditation, spiritual warfare, ministry, witnessing, personal abiding, and relationships with others. Through understanding and embracing God's rest, you too will be uplifted, challenged, encouraged, and freed to live life as He intended-within Him.

Book excerpt: "Rest is such a valuable book. If work is our national religion, Pang is the philosopher reintegrating our bifurcated selves."---Arianna Huffington, New York Times Book Review Overwork is the new normal. Rest is something to do when the important things are done—but they are never done. Looking at different forms of rest, from sleep to vacation, Silicon Valley futurist and business consultant Alex Soojung-Kim Pang dispels the myth that the harder we work the better the outcome. He combines rigorous scientific research with a rich array of examples of writers, painters, and thinkers—from Darwin to Stephen King—to challenge our tendency to see work and relaxation as antithetical. "Deliberate rest," as Pang calls it, is the true key to productivity, and will give us more energy, sharper ideas, and a better life. Rest offers a roadmap to rediscovering the importance of rest in our lives, and a convincing argument that we need to relax more if we actually want to get more done.

Book excerpt: He promised to save the land. She received a divine calling. But how can mere prayer quench his restlessness and her fears? Walking behind a plow day in and day out gets boring for a nineteen-year-old who longs for nothing more than adventure. In the midst of the rampant lawlessness and love of pleasure that drive their country, Kaelan Ellith yearns to make a difference. When a promise at his mother's deathbed gives him the impetus to do just that, he's off to the capital city to bring back the knowledge of Adon Olam. Despite his natural leadership skills, his schemes keep going awry, and lost people keep passing into eternity without hope. How can he ever keep such an impossible promise?Shy Carita Kostan knows the voice of Adon Olam, and she desires nothing more than to follow His calling: "Love. Serve. Pray. Persevere." Yet how can she minister His love to her neighbors when her soul is tormented by their unmet needs and handicapped by her own paralyzing fears? When the true nature of his promise and her call begin to surface, Kaelan and Carita just might discover how saving the world is entirely different than they imagined . . . if they have the humility and the courage to receive it. A clean, family-friendly Christian kingdom adventure fiction novel for all ages. Praise for Promise's Prayer "Very refreshing." "Inspiring characters" "Profound truths prevalent throughout." "Carita is such a sweet inspiration." "Delightful story." "A fun read!" "Definitely recommend to fans of history and clean medieval non-magical books." "Prayer moves the world," Ellrick added. "Prayer turns the schemes and purposes of men upside down." "You do need prayer, more than you know," Carita said softly. "Prayer is the keynote. Prayer isn't the preparation to accomplish the purposes of Adon Olam. It is the accomplishment of His purposes. Great works are done through prayer."

Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of the Year by The Washington Post, Time, NPR, Amazon,Vice, Bustle, The New York Times, The Guardian, Kirkus Reviews, Entertainment Weekly, The AV Club, & Audible A New York Times Bestseller “One of the most compelling protagonists modern fiction has offered in years: a loopy, quietly furious pillhead whose Ambien ramblings and Xanaxed b*tcheries somehow wend their way through sad and funny and strange toward something genuinely profound.” — Entertainment Weekly “Darkly hilarious . . . [Moshfegh’s] the kind of provocateur who makes you laugh out loud while drawing blood.” —Vogue From one of our boldest, most celebrated new literary voices, a novel about a young woman's efforts to duck the ills of the world by embarking on an extended hibernation with the help of one of the worst psychiatrists in the annals of literature and the battery of medicines she prescribes. Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, works an easy job at a hip art gallery, lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong? My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a powerful answer to that question. Through the story of a year spent under the influence of a truly mad combination of drugs designed to heal our heroine from her alienation from this world, Moshfegh shows us how reasonable, even necessary, alienation can be. Both tender and blackly funny, merciless and compassionate, it is a showcase for the gifts of one of our major writers working at the height of her powers.

The great London preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon had a lot to say during his four decades of ministry at the Metropolitan Tabernacle. And beyond his mighty voice, Spurgeon’s pen churned out countless words of biblical interpretation and Christian wisdom. These words can still encourage us today! Volume 4 of the Spurgeon Speaks series helps you find true rest—not mere relaxation, but the lasting peace that arises only out of confidence in God. Spurgeon points you to the biblical promises that God has made. Those words weren’t just valid for ancient Israelites or a Victorian-era preacher. God’s eternal promises can give you rest today. Presented in lovely editions that you’ll be proud to have on your shelf, the Spurgeon Speaks series offers focused readings on topics that were important to the Prince of Preachers. Expertly selected by Jason Allen and updated for twenty-first century readers, this series will be a valued addition to the library of pastors, scholars, and anyone who appreciates the legacy of Charles Haddon Spurgeon.

Book excerpt: The Scriptures teach clearly that God desires to live in intimate fellowship and communion with mankind. He wants us to enjoy His love, peace, joy, and companionship and to rest in His redemption, experiencing the perfect harmony and contentment and fulfillment of purpose for which He created us. God's original purpose for creating mankind was simply for us to enjoy relationship with Him, the kind of fellowship that the first couple, Adam and Eve, enjoyed in the Garden of Eden, when God walked with them in the cool of the evening (Gen. 3:8). Then, sin entered the human experience and separated all mankind from that divine fellowship. But when we place our faith in Christ's sacrifice for our sin, we are redeemed by the blood of Christ and justified in the sight of God. But that is not the end of the matter; it is only the beginning. God's intention is that we be completely restored--spirit, soul, and body--to the divine rest found in His redemption, He wants us to experience that mystery of intimate communion with our Creator/Redeemer. In this book we will discuss four important aspects of fulfilling the deepest desire of the human heart--to know God personally and intimately in the way God's great, loving heart intended. To know the love of God that brings true heart contentment, we need to walk in the understanding of these divine principles: The biblical basis for all prayer is resting in His redemption. The biblical basis for all Christian living is resting in His redemption. The biblical basis for total forgiveness is resting in His redemption. The biblical basis for divine contentment is resting in His redemption. Your life can be transformed when you allow Him to make them a reality to your heart. The love of God can fill your heart and make you a victorious lover of the Christ. You will be ruined for any lesser, temporal pleasure or love once you taste more deeply the wonders of resting in His redemption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science has now demonstrated without a doubt that we live in an “unfinished universe.” Discoveries in geology, biology, cosmology and other fields of scientific inquiry have shown that the cosmos has a narrative character and that the story is far from over. The sense of a universe that is still coming into being provides a fertile new framework for thinking about the relationship of faith to science. John F. Haught argues that if we take seriously the fact that the universe is a drama still unfolding, we can think new thoughts about God, and indeed about all the perennial themes of theology. Science's recent realization that the universe is dramatic, however, has yet to penetrate deeply into either spiritual or intellectual life. Most Christian thought and spirituality still presuppose an essentially static universe while influential academic and intellectual culture remains stuck in a stagnant materialist naturalism and cosmic pessimism. Resting on the Future asks about the meaning of an unfinished universe from the point of view of both Christian theology and contemporary intellectual life. Each chapter covers a distinct aspect of what Haught takes to be an essential transition to a new age in Catholic life and thought. Biology, cosmology, and other fields of science now provide the setting for a wholesome transformation of Catholic thought from a still predominantly pre-scientific to a more hopeful and scientifically informed vision of God, humanity and the natural world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While topics such as death, funerary cult, and the netherworld have received considerable scholarly attention in the context of the Ugaritic textual corpus, the related concept of life has been relatively neglected. Life and Mortality in Ugaritic takes as its premise that one cannot grasp the significance of mwt (“to die”) without first having wrestled with the concept of ḥyy (“to live”). In this book, Matthew McAffee takes a lexical approach to the study of life and death in the Ugaritic textual corpus. He identifies and analyzes the Ugaritic terms most commonly used to talk about life and mortality in order to construct a more representative framework of the ancient perspective on these topics, and he concludes by synthesizing the results of this lexical study into a broader literary discussion that considers, among other things, the implications for our understanding of the first-millennium Katumuwa stele from Zincirli. McAffee’s study complements previous scholarly work in this area, which has tended to rely on conceptual and theoretical treatment of mortality, and advances the discussion by providing a more focused lexical analysis of the Ugaritic terms in question. It will be of interest to Semitic scholars and those who study Ugaritic in particular, in addition to students of the culture of the ancient Levant.
