Book excerpt: Restaurant Insanity is the story of one man's journey through life in the restaurant business. This behind the scenes look at the day-to-day operations pulls back the veil to show the real experiences of your servers, cooks, managers and owners, told from the perspective of someone that has had every position in the business.Restaurant Insanity draws upon real life experiences with colleagues and uses humor as the bridge between what the customer thinks is happening and what really happens in the business. From telling the customer off...in the server's mind, of course...to showing what it is like to work in a large corporate atmosphere, Restaurant Insanity can open your eyes and make you think about how you treat your waiters, waitresses, cooks and bartenders. Who knows it might even make you a better customer!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger McManus, a battle-scarred, veteran entrepreneur, teams up with Chef Mark Garcia to develop an entirely different perspective on the subject of restaurant ownership. Entrepreneurial Insanity in the Restaurant Business challenges the reader to keep the art of cooking and food design in perspective, but to get real about the business of selling food! The ideas in this book will forever change how the motivated restaurateur will view his or her profession -- and life. The concept behind the Entrepreneurial Insanity series rests on that premise; love what you do, but work toward having a life and a business that are separate entities. Chances are very good that someday these two entities will want (or need) to take divergent paths. Mark and Roger have created a book that makes the distinction between owning a restaurant and owning a business asset very clear. It is the difference between owning a small business and being an entrepreneur! This book lays out the case for, and the strategy by which, professional restaurateurs can grow their business and their freedom.

Author Alaric Cabiling has one of the most distinct authorial voices in literature today, putting his penchant for subtlety and persuasive language on display in his debut work of fiction. Two brothers test fate. A father mourns the loss of his child. An old abandoned home is the scene of a final journey into the past. A man revisits the scene of a one-night stand. Each story is unforgiving in its attempt at revealing the transcendental from the mundane.

Book excerpt: Is insanity a myth? Does it exist merely to keep psychiatrists in business? In Insanity: The Idea and Its Consequences, Dr. Szasz challenges the way both science and society define insanity; in the process, he helps us better understand this often misunderstood condition. Dr. Szasz presents a carefully crafted account of the insanity concept and shows how it relates to and differs from three closely allied ideas—bodily illness, social deviance, and the sick role.

Ouch!” fourteen-year-old Jane cried, believing she was being bitten by spiders as she fled her bedroom to seek the comfort of the sofa in the downstairs living room. In succeeding nights, this behavior was repeated, only now, she was also shouting, “Bats in the belfry! Bats in the belfry!” imagining there were people occupying the unfinished area of the upstairs that was accessed through her bedroom. These episodes revealed for the first time she was having full-blown mental health issues. This was not news to her younger sisters, Elaine and Julie, who recognized from very young ages Jane’s inappropriate and antisocial behavior. As adults, the two younger sisters, for the most part, managed to escape from dealing with the tribulations presented by their older sister until their mother’s heart attack when they were thrown into Jane’s hell head on.

Book excerpt: Something has happened to food in America. It is no longer simply food-- filling, good-tasting, life-sustaining. Rather, it is "fat free" or "high in fiber" or "loaded with calories"-- it is an enemy that will steal life away, or a savior that will prolong it. In this provocative and entertaining look at the uniquely American obsession with food, Michelle Stacey chronicles the psychological and cultural forces that have transformed oat bran and broccoli into magical totems, and steak, butter, and eggs into killers. Stacey takes us on a revealing journey through the landscape of American food paranoia-- from supermarkets, to restaurant kitchens, to research labs-- and ultimately suggests a new answer to our fears, one that takes into account our ancient and abiding love for eating. Perceptive and original, "Consumed" will change the way you think about food.

Book excerpt: The story of this novel revolves around the main protagonist named Jiang Rudd of Indian Citizenship. Although, Jiang's parentage is of American Chinese origin, but he is a contemporary Indian of the 22nd Century. Jiang is a man of extra-ordinary character and noticeable qualities and these noticeable qualities get him into very unusual situations, which he handles in his own unique styles. Story in the novel reveals life and activities of Jiang. Therefore, as we move on to read the novel, the story would uncover Jiang's adventure, mis-adventure, love, sex, faithfulness, betrayal, passion, skills, concocted ambition (yes it's concocted) and knowledge. The story is based on the future, where you can see future in bits and pieces. Jiang would be the cynosure of this novel, but this novel fleetingly deals with India's hypothetical future (obviously, it's the picture of writer's free floating thought process & hallucination). To tell things in brief, a future, which is prosperous for few and for the rest, it is still challenging, in-fact quite miserable. Though it is out of my wild imagination, but even in the wilderness, it is invoking us what we may do and what we may avoid to do in coming years to take India to the position where it actually deserves.

Book excerpt: Are you a food addict? Do you gain more weight than you lose after every diet? Can one cookie destroy all your good intentions? Do you eat when you are disappointed, tense or anxious? Since its publication, Food Addiction has become a primary resource for food addicts and compulsive eaters. Now it is updated and presented in a revised and expanded edition, with a new chapter on relapse. For a food addict, relapse is an ever present danger which begins in the mind before reaching for that cupcake or other trigger food. Here food addiction is defined, trigger foods are identified and consequences of food addiction are revealed. A lifetime eating plan demonstrating how to stick with a healthful food plan for the long term is also provided. "For some people, foods can be as addictive as alcohol," Kay Sheppard explains. "Gummy bears and marshmallow chicks can be vicious killers whose effects can lead to depression, irritability and even suicide. The terrible truth is that for certain individuals, refined carbohydrates can trigger the addictive process. This book is an effort to help you understand and solve the problems of compulsive eating."
