Book excerpt: In this thesis, I have created and analysed three new datasets, providing information about leaf, tree and ecosystem responses to drought (Chapter 2), wood properties and traits in relation to drought sensitivity (Chapter 3) and above-ground growth responses to drought (Chapter 4 & 5) in the Amazon forest. Despite that no new data was added to the existing literature, I believe that the various presented analyses using previously published data have merit and contribute to the understanding of complex drought responses in humid neotropical forests.Overall, this thesis shows that the analysis of new datasets consisting of existing data and improved model representations can significantly improve our understanding of leaf, tree and ecosystem scale responses to drought in the Amazon forest. While I offer some first attempts to systematically analyse drought responses, to link wood anatomy to tree hydraulic architecture and drought sensitivity, and to upscale and model above-ground growth responses to drought in the Amazon, shortcomings and major uncertainties clearly remain. New field campaigns, improved data sharing, novel remote sensing products and new experimental work on the processes examined in this thesis could greatly benefit our understanding of drought responses in the Amazon and help to closely monitor the expected response of Amazon forest functioning to climate change.

Book excerpt: Over recent decades, climate changes, especially revealed through alteration in rainfall patterns, with apparent intensification of the dry season, have been documented throughout Latin America. At the same time, this region of the globe has displayed strong economic growth along with profound changes in land use and emission of air pollutants. Long-term studies have shown that functional groups of plants from tropical and sub-tropical rainforests and savannas, the largest and most diverse biomes in the region, present different sensitivities to climate change, increasing CO2 and atmospheric deposition of nitrogen, for example, resulting in evident changes in community structure and dynamics. In general, these factors have led to a reduction in plant diversity. Ozone, though less studied in the region, has been monitored in the major urban centres, and its relation to land use change, as through biomass burning, has become evident. The main results of plant responses to pollutants and climate change are presented.

In addition, the basin is the largest global repository of biodiversity and produces about 20 percent of the world s flow of fresh water into the oceans. Despite the large CO2 efflux from recent deforestation, the Amazon rainforest is still considered to be a net carbon sink or reservoir because vegetation growth on average exceeds mortality. However, current climate trends and human-induced deforestation may be transforming forest structure and behavior. Amazon forest dieback would be a massive event, affecting all life-forms that rely on this diverse ecosystem, including humans, and producing ramifications for the entire planet. Clearly, with changes at a global scale at stake, there is a need to better understand the risk, and dynamics of Amazon dieback. Therefore, the purpose of the book is to assist in understanding the risk, process and dynamics of potential Amazon dieback and its implications.
