Book excerpt: Abstract : There are various challenges that face a wireless sensor network (WSN) that mainly originate from the limited resources a sensor node usually has. A sensor node often relies on a battery as a power supply which, due to its limited capacity, tends to shorten the life-time of the node and the network as a whole. Other challenges arise from the limited capabilities of the sensors/actuators a node is equipped with, leading to complication like a poor coverage of the event, or limited mobility in the environment. This dissertation deals with the coverage problem as well as the limited power and capabilities of a sensor node. In some environments, a controlled deployment of the WSN may not be attainable. In such case, the only viable option would be a random deployment over the region of interest (ROI), leading to a great deal of uncovered areas as well as many cutoff nodes. Three different scenarios are presented, each addressing the coverage problem for a distinct purpose. First, a multi-objective optimization is considered with the purpose of relocating the sensor nodes after the initial random deployment, through maximizing the field coverage while minimizing the cost of mobility. Simulations reveal the improvements in coverage, while maintaining the mobility cost to a minimum. In the second scenario, tracking a mobile target with a high level of accuracy is of interest. The relocation process was based on learning the spatial mobility trends of the targets. Results show the improvement in tracking accuracy in terms of mean square position error. The last scenario involves the use of inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) to predict the destination of a given target. This lay the ground for future exploration of the relocation problem to achieve improved prediction accuracy. Experiments investigated the interaction between prediction accuracy and terrain severity. The other WSN limitation is dealt with by introducing the concept of sparse sensing to schedule the measurements of sensor nodes. A hybrid WSN setup of low and high precision nodes is examined. Simulations showed that the greedy algorithm used for scheduling the nodes, realized a network that is more resilient to individual node failure. Moreover, the use of more affordable nodes stroke a better trade-off between deployment feasibility and precision.

Often, sensor data is meaningful only if its position can be determined. Many WSN are deployed indoors or in areas where Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal coverage is not available, and thus GNSS positioning cannot be guaranteed. In these scenarios, WSN may be relied upon to achieve a satisfactory degree of positioning accuracy. Typically, batteries power sensor nodes in WSN. These batteries are costly to replace. Therefore, power consumption is an important aspect, being performance and lifetime of WSN strongly relying on the ability to reduce it. It is crucial to design effective strategies to maximize battery lifetime. Optimization of power consumption can be made at different layers. For example, at the physical layer, power control and resource optimization may play an important role, as well as at higher layers through network topology and MAC protocols. The objective of this Thesis is to study the optimization of resources in WSN that are employed for positioning purposes, with the ultimate goal being the minimization of power consumption. We focus on anchor-based positioning, where a subset of the WSN nodes know their location (anchors) and send ranging signals to nodes with unknown position (targets) to assist them in estimating it through distance-related measurements. Two well known of such measurements are received signal strength (RSS) and time of arrival (TOA), in which this Thesis focuses. In order to minimize power consumption while providing a certain quality of positioning service, in this dissertation we research on the problems of power control and node selection. Aiming at a distributed implementation of the proposed techniques, we resort to the tools of non-cooperative game theory. First, transmit power allocation is addressed for RSS based ranging. Using game theory formulation, we develop a potential game leading to an iterated best response algorithm with sure convergence. As a performance metric, we introduce the geometric dilution of precision (GDOP), which is shown to help achieving a suitable geometry of the selected anchor nodes. The proposed scheme and relative distributed algorithms provide good equilibrium performance in both static and dynamic scenarios. Moreover, we present a distributed, low complexity implementation and analyze it in terms of computational complexity. Results show that performance close to that of exhaustive search is possible. We then address the transmit power allocation problem for TOA based ranging, also resorting to a game theoretic formulation. In this setup, and also considering GDOP as performance metric, a supermodular game formulation is proposed, along with a distributed algorithm with guaranteed convergence to a unique solution, based on iterated best response. We analyze the proposed algorithm in terms of the price of anarchy (PoA), that is, compared to a centralized optimum solution, and shown to have a moderate performance loss. Finally, this dissertation addresses the effect of different MAC protocols and topologies in the positioning performance. In this direction, we study the performance of mesh and cluster-tree topologies defined in WSN standards. Different topologies place different constraints in network connectivity, having a substantial impact on the performance of positioning algorithms. While mesh topology allows high connectivity with large energy consumption, cluster-tree topologies are more energy efficient but suffer from reduced connectivity and poor positioning performance. In order to improve the performance of cluster-tree topologies, we propose a cluster formation algorithm. It significantly improves connectivity with anchor nodes, achieving vastly improved positioning performance.

Book excerpt: Efficient sensor deployment strategies are developed in this work for target monitoring and coverage improvement in collaborative wireless mobile sensor networks. The objective of the target monitoring problem is to compute the desired sensing and communication radii of sensors as well as their location at every time instant such that a set of prescribed specifications such as connectivity preservation and low energy consumption are satisfied. An energy-efficient strategy is also proposed for tracking a moving target in a sensing field, using a grid of sufficiently small rectangular cells. The grid is converted to a graph with properly weighted edges. A shortest-path algorithm is subsequently used to route information from target to destination by a subset of sensors. In the problem of coverage improvement in mobile sensor networks, on the other hand, the objective is to place each sensor in the field using available local information about its neighbors in such a way that the area covered by sensors is as large as possible, while some important criteria are taken into consideration. Both cases of identical and nonidentical sensors (in terms of sensing radii) are considered, and different iterative algorithms are developed which are shown to be convergent. The relocation algorithms are based on the relative position of each sensor w.r.t. the boundaries of its cell or the corresponding corner point. The algorithms are extended to the case of limited communication range of sensors (leading to inaccurate Voronoi cells), an environment with prioritized sensing (mathematically characterized by a weighting function for different points), and an environment with obstacles (leading to some invisible areas). Simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

These sensors are designed to be able to sense specific phenomenon over a large geographic area and communicate this information to the user. Most sensor networks are designed to be stand-alone systems that can operate without user intervention for long periods of time. While the use of wireless sensor networks have been demonstrated in various military and commercial applications, their full potential has not been realized primarily due to the lack of efficient methods to self organize and cover the entire area of interest. Techniques currently available focus solely on homogeneous wireless sensor networks either in terms of static networks or mobile networks and suffers from device specific inadequacies such as lack of coverage, power and fault tolerance. Failing nodes result in coverage loss and breakage in communication connectivity and hence there is a pressing need for a fault tolerant system to allow replacing of the failed nodes. In this dissertation, a unique hybrid sensor network is demonstrated that includes a host of mobile sensor platforms. It is shown that the coverage area of the static sensor network can be improved by self-organizing the mobile sensor platforms to allow interaction with the static sensor nodes and thereby increase the coverage area. The performance of the hybrid sensor network is analyzed for a set of N mobile sensors to determine and optimize parameters such as the position of the mobile nodes for maximum coverage of the sensing area without loss of signal between the mobile sensors, static nodes and the central control station. A novel approach to tracking dynamic targets is also presented. Unlike other tracking methods that are based on computationally complex methods, the strategy adopted in this work is based on a computationally simple but effective technique of received signal strength indicator measurements. The algorithms developed in this dissertation are based on a number of reasonable assumptions that are easily verified in a densely distributed sensor network and require simple computations that efficiently tracks the target in the sensor field. False alarm rate, probability of detection and latency are computed and compared with other published techniques. The performance analysis of the tracking system is done on an experimental testbed and also through simulation and the improvement in accuracy over other methods is demonstrated.
