Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resource Structure of Agriculture: An Economic Analysis focuses on the quantitative economic analysis of the agricultural industry. The book first discusses the theory of resource demand. Topics include decision milieu in agriculture; aggregate demand for an input; and notes on the statistical estimation of the demand function for an input. The text also examines the role of labor in agriculture, including agricultural wages, migration from agriculture, and regional labor supply. The monograph underscores the use of machineries in the agricultural sector. Analysis of post-war demand for power and machinery; early developments in agricultural mechanization; trends in the use of other machinery; and supply conditions for agricultural machinery are discussed. The text also looks at the use of fertilizers and pesticides in the agricultural sector, as well the need to invest in farm buildings. The book examines the demand for resources and supply of agricultural products. Future pattern of resource use and technological change; interactions between demands for different resources; and resource demand and a derived supply elasticity are discussed. The text is a valuable source of data for readers interested in the economic analysis of the agricultural industry.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 4.5, , language: English, abstract: The focus of the research presented in this monograph are the processes of saving resources in agro-industrial production. The author proposes a modern concept of resource conservation management. The research methodology was the clustering of economic objects, econometric modeling, optimization of the structure of resource consumption. The focus of the research presented in this monograph is resource conservation processes in agro-industrial production. The author offers a modern concept of resource conservation management. Research methodology: clustering of economic objects, econometric modeling, optimization of the structure of resource consumption. Based on the typology of economic objects, the following classes of resource consumption are proposed: extensive, intensive, innovation and investment. The extensive type of resource conservation is distinguished by the use of economies of scale in agribusiness. The formation of agricultural holdings and the production of food by an agricultural enterprise within the boundaries of the full value chain leads to resource savings through concentration. The intensive type of facilities is characterized by an increase in specific investment per unit of industry size. This is a higher level of chemicalization, mechanization, and robotization of agricultural production. In modern conditions of environmental trends in life and economy, it is replaced by a natural-adaptive type of resource conservation. Among the features of this type, it is necessary to highlight the adaptation of machinery and equipment in agricultural production to the biological properties of agricultural plants and animals. An innovative type of resource saving is innovations in biotechnology, new resource-saving technology and equipment, and agricultural management. The innovative type is added by the investment type. Investments make it possible to ensure a constant increase in the financial flow in agriculture. When the increase in this flow outstrips the increase in costs, there is a significant resource-saving investment effect. The author of the study revealed a pattern between the emergence of the resource-saving effect and the potential for using resources. The resource-saving effect is observed with the full use of the potential of resources. Special attention is paid to human capital. The dynamics of competencies allows to increase the innovativeness of the team in an agricultural organization. The book is understandable for managers.

Book excerpt: This volume celebrates the life and career of Gordon Rausser, pioneer and leader in natural resource economics, while critically overviewing the emerging literature in the field. As the chair of the Agriculture and Resource Economics department at UC Berkeley, Rausser led the transformation of the department from a traditional agricultural economics department to a diverse resource economics department addressing issues of agriculture, food, natural resources, environmental economics, energy, and development. This book builds on this theme, showcasing not only the scope of Rausser's work but also key developments in the field. The volume is organized into two parts. The first part speaks about the lessons of Gordon Rausser's career, in particular, his role as a leader in different spheres, his capacity to integrate teaching and entrepreneurship, and his impact on the world food system. The second part will address some of the significant developments in the field he contributed to and how it relates to his work. The chapters include contributions from modern leaders in the economics field and cover diverse topics from many subfields including public policy, public finance, law, econometrics, macroeconomics, and water resources. Providing an excellent reference, as well as a celebration of a pivotal figure in the field, this volume will be useful for practitioners and scholars in agricultural and resource economics, especially the many individuals familiar with Gordon Rausser and his career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1970. The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the special problems of agriculture in modern economies. The author writes for students of economics who have already acquired the elements of economic theory; no attempt is made, therefore, to explain simple theoretical concepts, but instead these are used in the analysis of some of the main problems of agricultural adjustment. Emphasis is placed on the position of agriculture in the economies of western Europe and of the United States. Sufficient historical background is given to explain the present use of the factors of production in agriculture and the way in which this use and policies of agricultural support vary from one country to another. Agricultural support policies are discussed with reference to their effect on consumers, producers and on rural society.

This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s population is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050. Climate change, population, and income growth will drive food demand in the coming decades. Baseline scenarios show food prices for maize, rice, and wheat would significantly increase between 2005 and 2050, and the number of people at risk of hunger in the developing world would grow from 881 million in 2005 to more than a billion people by 2050. Food Security in a World of Natural Resource Scarcity: The Role of Agricultural Technologies examines which current and potential strategies offer solutions to fight hunger. The type and effectiveness of agricultural technologies are highly debated, and the debates are often polarized. Technology options are many, but transparent evidence-based information has been inconclusive or scarce. This book endeavors to respond to the challenge of growing food sustainably without degrading our natural resource base. The authors use a groundbreaking modeling approach that combines comprehensive process-based modeling of agricultural technologies with sophisticated global food demand, supply, and trade modeling. This approach assesses the yield and food impact through 2050 of a broad range of agricultural technologies under varying assumptions of climate change for the three key staple crops: maize, rice, and wheat. Geared toward policymakers in ministries of agriculture and national agricultural research institutes, as well as multilateral development banks and the private sector, Food Security in a World of Natural Resource Scarcity provides guidance on various technology strategies and which to pursue as competition grows for land, water, and energy across productive sectors and even increasingly across borders. The book is an important tool for targeting investment decisions today and going forward.
