Book excerpt: This book highlights the synthesis of polarization selection system in the background of passive noise formed by reflections from space-distributed targets. This synthesis is fulfilled as close as possible to its ideal configuration in terms of maximal signal-to-noise ratio for the matched load of radar station antenna system. It presents a new approach to radar system resolution enhancement based on the development of mathematical model for radiometric receivers with mono-pulse antenna systems, as well as creation of a new algorithm that allows increasing angular resolution during the object’s search and tracking due to special signal processing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents novel research ideas and offers insights into radar system design, artificial intelligence and signal processing applications. Further, it proposes a new concept of antenna spatial polarization characteristics (SPC), suggesting that the antenna polarization is a function of the spatial direction and providing new ideas for radar signal processing (RSP) and anti-jamming. It also discusses the design of an advanced signal-processing algorithm, and proposes new polarimetric and anti-jamming methods using antenna inherent properties. The book helps readers discover the potential of radar information processing and improve its anti-interference and target identification ability. It is of interest to university researchers, radar engineers and graduate students in computer science and electronics who wish to learn the core principles, methods, algorithms, and applications of RSP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the target radar cross section (RCS) continuously decreases, the need for high-resolution high-gain radar increases, One approach to high resolution is to use distributed subarray antennas (DSAs), because of limited surface available on many radar platforms. The concept of distributed subarray antennas is examined for both Multifunction Array Radar (MFAR) and Very High Frequency (VHF) applications. By combining distributed subarrays located on the available areas of a constrained platforms, the MFAR and VHF DSA can achieve increased resolution and potential reductions in cost and complexity compared to a conventional array. The two-way pattern design of DSA effectively suppresses the undesired grating lobes by using separate transmit and receive antennas. By the pattern multiplication principle, the grating lobes in the receive pattern have been suppressed by proper null placement of subarray in the receive and transmit patterns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mapping of extended, cultural ground targets by an airborne radar is examined using communication theory concepts including those of the antenna transfer function and the target spatial frequency spectrum. Use of the set of transfer functions that correspond to Taylor aperture distributions and specification of the targets directly in terms of their spatial frequency spectra, permits one to examine the antenna images for quality and resolution. The results obtained indicate that resolution for a class of ground targets can be much better than is predicted by the two-point Rayleigh resolution criterion. It is also true that there can be situations in which the shape of the antenna images are quite independent of the radiation pattern. Several types of spatial noise were also included in the input spectrum to investigate noise effects on image quality and resolution. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radar polarimetry has been highly sought after for its use in the precise monitoring of Earth's surface. Polarimetric SAR Imaging explains the basic concepts of polarimetry and its diverse applications including: deforestation, tree classification, landslide detection, tsunamis, volcano eruptions and ash distribution, snow accumulation, rice field monitoring, urban area exploration, ship detection, among other applications. The explanations use actual data sets taken by Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS and ALOS2). With the increasing problems presented by climate change, there is a growing need for detailed earth observation using polarimetric data. As the treatment of vector nature of radar waves is complex, there is a gap between the theory and the application. Polarimetric SAR Imaging: Theory and Applications addresses and fills this gap. Features: Provides cutting-edge polarimetric applications for earth observation with full color images. Includes detailed descriptions of theory, equations, expansions, and flowcharts, and numerous real examples. Explains concepts, data analysis, and applications in simple and clear language aimed at an intuitive comprehension. Provides specific and unique examples of PolSAR images derived from actual space and airborne systems (ALOS/ALOS2, PiSAR-x/L) Covers the wide range of the radar polarimetry, especially the decomposition of the polarimetry data, an original method developed by the author using the Japanese polarimetric SAR data Illustrated in full color using images generated by polarimetric techniques, this book is easy to understand and use for both student and expert, and is an excellent resource both in the classroom and in the field.

Book excerpt: Clouds play a critical role in the Earth's climate, general atmospheric circulation, and global water balance. Clouds are essential elements in mesoscale meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, air pollution, atmosphericradiation, and weather forecasting, and thus must be understood by any student or researcher in the atmospheric sciences. Cloud Dynamics provides a skillful and comprehensive examination of the nature of clouds--what they look like and why, how scientists observe them, and the basic dynamics and physics that underlie them. The book describes the mechanics governing each type of cloud that occurs in Earth's atmosphere, and the organization of various types of clouds in larger weather systems such as fronts, thunderstorms, and hurricanes. This book is aimed specifically at graduate students, advanced undergraduates, practicing researchers either already in atmospheric science or moving in from a related scientific field, and operational meteorologists. Some prior knowledge of atmospheric dynamics and physics is helpful, but a thorough overview of the necessary prerequisites is supplied. Provides a complete treatment of clouds integrating the analysis of air motions with cloud structure, microphysics, and precipitation mechanics Describes and explains the basic types of clouds and cloud systems that occur in the atmosphere-fog, stratus, stratocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrus, thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts, orographically induced clouds, mesoscale convection complexes, hurricanes, fronts, and extratropical cyclones Presents a photographic guide, presented in the first chapter, linking the examination of each type of cloud with an image to enhance visual retention and understanding Summarizes the fundamentals, both observational and theoretical, of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, cloud microphysics, and radar meteorology, allowing each type of cloud to be examined in depth Integrates the latest field observations, numerical model simulations, and theory Supplies a theoretical treatment suitable for the advanced undergraduate or graduate level

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generalized likelihood ratio test is used to find approximate limits on the angular resolution of two targets for a mechanically rotated antenna. The accuracy of maximum-likelihood azimuth estimates of the two interfering targets is also investigated. The results are found to be comparable to those obtained by directly processing the outputs of the individual elements of an antenna array. A simple ad hoc procedure for angular resolution and estimation is also analyzed. The performance of the ad hoc test is found to be within 2 to 3 dB of that of the generalized likelihood ratio test.
