Book excerpt: The propagation of high-power ultra-short laser pulses in gas gives rise to many phenomenas and leads in particular to the creation of a plasma column where electromagnetic waves propagate. These phenomenas are described by the general fluid mechanics equations relative to relativistic plasmas combined with Maxwell equations. Particularly, the amplitude of the electromagnetic field satisfies a nonlinear relativistic Schrodinger equation. In this thesis, we study this relativistic Schrodinger equation. We begin by solving the Cauchy problem in arbitrary space dimension in Sobolev spaces H^s(R^N) with finite regularity without any smallness assumption on the initial data by energy methods. Afterwards, we proved rigourously that in a sens the relativistic Schrodinger equation is, in dimension two, a good approximation of a Klein-Gordon equation. Finally, in the two-dimensional case, we showed the existence, the uniqueness up to translations and rotations and the orbital stability in a weaker sens than the usual one of solitary waves solutions of the relativistic Schrodinger equation, using the minimization method of T. Cazenave and P.L. Lions.

His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
