Book Synopsis Convex Analysis and Nonlinear Geometric Elliptic Equations by : Ilya J. Bakelman
Download or read book Convex Analysis and Nonlinear Geometric Elliptic Equations written by Ilya J. Bakelman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations in modem nonlinear analysis rely on ideas, methods and prob lems from various fields of mathematics, mechanics, physics and other applied sciences. In the second half of the twentieth century many prominent, ex emplary problems in nonlinear analysis were subject to intensive study and examination. The united ideas and methods of differential geometry, topology, differential equations and functional analysis as well as other areas of research in mathematics were successfully applied towards the complete solution of com plex problems in nonlinear analysis. It is not possible to encompass in the scope of one book all concepts, ideas, methods and results related to nonlinear analysis. Therefore, we shall restrict ourselves in this monograph to nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems as well as global geometric problems. In order that we may examine these prob lems, we are provided with a fundamental vehicle: The theory of convex bodies and hypersurfaces. In this book we systematically present a series of centrally significant results obtained in the second half of the twentieth century up to the present time. Particular attention is given to profound interconnections between various divisions in nonlinear analysis. The theory of convex functions and bodies plays a crucial role because the ellipticity of differential equations is closely connected with the local and global convexity properties of their solutions. Therefore it is necessary to have a sufficiently large amount of material devoted to the theory of convex bodies and functions and their connections with partial differential equations.

Book Synopsis Variational Inequalities and Flow in Porous Media by : M. Chipot
Download or read book Variational Inequalities and Flow in Porous Media written by M. Chipot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are the contents of a one semester graduate course which taught at Brown University during the academic year 1981-1982. They are mainly concerned with regularity theory for obstacle problems, and with the dam problem, which, in the rectangular case, is one of the most in teresting applications of Variational Inequalities with an obstacle. Very little background is needed to read these notes. The main re sults of functional analysis which are used here are recalled in the text. The goal of the two first chapters is to introduce the notion of Varia tional Inequality and give some applications from physical mathematics. The third chapter is concerned with a regularity theory for the obstacle problems. These problems have now invaded a large domain of applied mathematics including optimal control theory and mechanics, and a collec tion of regularity results available seems to be timely. Roughly speaking, for elliptic variational inequalities of second order we prove that the solution has as much regularity as the obstacle(s). We combine here the theory for one or two obstacles in a unified way, and one of our hopes is that the reader will enjoy the wide diversity of techniques used in this approach. The fourth chapter is concerned with the dam problem. This problem has been intensively studied during the past decade (see the books of Baiocchi-Capelo and Kinderlehrer-Stampacchia in the references). The relationship with Variational Inequalities has already been quoted above.
Book Synopsis Nonlinearity and Functional Analysis by : Melvyn S. Berger
Download or read book Nonlinearity and Functional Analysis written by Melvyn S. Berger and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1977-10-27 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinearity and Functional Analysis is a collection of lectures that aim to present a systematic description of fundamental nonlinear results and their applicability to a variety of concrete problems taken from various fields of mathematical analysis. For decades, great mathematical interest has focused on problems associated with linear operators and the extension of the well-known results of linear algebra to an infinite-dimensional context. This interest has been crowned with deep insights, and the substantial theory that has been developed has had a profound influence throughout the mathematical sciences. This volume comprises six chapters and begins by presenting some background material, such as differential-geometric sources, sources in mathematical physics, and sources from the calculus of variations, before delving into the subject of nonlinear operators. The following chapters then discuss local analysis of a single mapping and parameter dependent perturbation phenomena before going into analysis in the large. The final chapters conclude the collection with a discussion of global theories for general nonlinear operators and critical point theory for gradient mappings. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of mathematics and physics, and to those with interest in conventional linear functional analysis and ordinary and partial differential equations.

Book Synopsis Non-Linear Partial Differential Equations by : E.E. Rosinger
Download or read book Non-Linear Partial Differential Equations written by E.E. Rosinger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-11-22 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A massive transition of interest from solving linear partial differential equations to solving nonlinear ones has taken place during the last two or three decades. The availability of better computers has often made numerical experimentations progress faster than the theoretical understanding of nonlinear partial differential equations. The three most important nonlinear phenomena observed so far both experimentally and numerically, and studied theoretically in connection with such equations have been the solitons, shock waves and turbulence or chaotical processes. In many ways, these phenomena have presented increasing difficulties in the mentioned order. In particular, the latter two phenomena necessarily lead to nonclassical or generalized solutions for nonlinear partial differential equations.

Book Synopsis Incompressible Bipolar and Non-Newtonian Viscous Fluid Flow by : Hamid Bellout
Download or read book Incompressible Bipolar and Non-Newtonian Viscous Fluid Flow written by Hamid Bellout and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of incompressible multipolar viscous fluids is a non-Newtonian model of fluid flow, which incorporates nonlinear viscosity, as well as higher order velocity gradients, and is based on scientific first principles. The Navier-Stokes model of fluid flow is based on the Stokes hypothesis, which a priori simplifies and restricts the relationship between the stress tensor and the velocity. By relaxing the constraints of the Stokes hypothesis, the mathematical theory of multipolar viscous fluids generalizes the standard Navier-Stokes model. The rigorous theory of multipolar viscous fluids is compatible with all known thermodynamical processes and the principle of material frame indifference; this is in contrast with the formulation of most non-Newtonian fluid flow models which result from ad hoc assumptions about the relation between the stress tensor and the velocity. The higher-order boundary conditions, which must be formulated for multipolar viscous flow problems, are a rigorous consequence of the principle of virtual work; this is in stark contrast to the approach employed by authors who have studied the regularizing effects of adding artificial viscosity, in the form of higher order spatial derivatives, to the Navier-Stokes model. A number of research groups, primarily in the United States, Germany, Eastern Europe, and China, have explored the consequences of multipolar viscous fluid models; these efforts, and those of the authors, which are described in this book, have focused on the solution of problems in the context of specific geometries, on the existence of weak and classical solutions, and on dynamical systems aspects of the theory. This volume will be a valuable resource for mathematicians interested in solutions to systems of nonlinear partial differential equations, as well as to applied mathematicians, fluid dynamicists, and mechanical engineers with an interest in the problems of fluid mechanics.
