Book excerpt: Dans cette recherche, nous avons cherché à mieux comprendre la manière dont les élèves allophones résolvent des problèmes mathématiques et la cause des difficultés qu'ils rencontrent dans ce type de tâche. Pour atteindre notre objectif, nous avons effectué des entretiens individuels avec 16 élèves allophones de 2e, 3e ou 4e année du primaire. Ces entretiens nous ont permis d'obtenir les verbalisations et les traces écrites de ces élèves pour les problèmes qu'ils ont résolus. L'analyse de nos données a mené aux 3 profils de solutionneurs que nous avons présentés avec 4 cas. Ces profils facilitent la compréhension des éléments qui ont eu un impact sur la résolution des problèmes chez les participants de notre étude. Nous avons d'ailleurs profité de la présentation des profils pour souligner le lien entre l'hésitation et la réussite des problèmes chez les élèves allophones. D'autre part, nous avons ajouté notre contribution au modèle de Berger (2015) qui explique l'interaction entre la langue et les mathématiques en résolution de problème en langue étrangère. Nous y avons notamment ajouté des éléments qui prennent en compte le type de problème présenté aux élèves, les indices qui peuvent les induire en erreur, les propositions qui peuvent rendre plus difficile le problème de même qu'une typologie des erreurs. En outre, le protocole que nous avons développé dans notre recherche, qui permet de déterminer si c'est la compréhension du français langue d'enseignement ou celles des structures mathématiques qui est la principale cause de difficultés des élèves allophones, est opérationnel pour les professionnels de l'éducation. Notre étude peut être le point de départ pour des enseignants afin d'amorcer une réflexion concernant le soutien qui répond réellement aux besoins en mathématiques des élèves allophones.

Mais quelles sont les répercussions exactes des difficultés langagières des élèves sur leurs apprentissages en mathématiques ? La connaissance de la langue usuelle ou la fréquentation des cours de mathématiques ordinaires permettent-elles de surmonter cet obstacle ? A ce propos, il nous paraît intéressant d'observer de plus près comment se déroulent les leçons dans les classes accueillant des élèves allophones. Ces derniers profitent-ils des enseignements au même titre que leurs camarades ? Les difficultés langagières ne perturbent-elles pas l'activité des élèves et de leur enseignant ? Les enseignements proposés par les professeurs qui les accueillent sont-ils adaptés aux spécificités de leur public ? Considérant qu'il convient d'examiner l'ensemble du système didactique pour appréhender correctement cette problématique, nous regarderons en effet aussi bien l'enseignant que ses élèves ainsi que leurs interactions. Pour éclairer ces questions, nous nous appuierons sur des recherches issues principalement de la didactique des mathématiques et du français langue seconde. Nos propres expérimentations auprès de classes accueillant des élèves allophones ainsi que nos analyses des pratiques professionnelles des enseignants nous permettront de compléter cette étude. Ces réflexions nous conduiront à envisager des adaptations ou des dispositifs susceptibles de pallier les obstacles relevés et de faciliter ainsi l'enseignement des mathématiques aux élèves allophones.

Cependant, peu d'études se sont intéressées spécifiquement à l'implication de ces fonctions dans la résolution de problèmes mathématiques. Ce mémoire de recherche exploratoire propose donc d'étudier l'implication de la mémoire de travail, de l'inhibition, de la flexibilité et de la planification dans la résolution de problèmes mathématiques chez des enfants de CM2. Conformément à nos attentes, cette étude a permis de mettre en évidence des corrélations entre ces fonctions exécutives et la résolution de problèmes. Elle encourage donc la considération de ces fonctions exécutives dans la pratique orthophonique.

Part I brings together studies dealing with descriptive concepts. First examined is the notion of “accidens” in Latin grammar and its Greek counterparts. Other papers address questions with a strong echo in today’s linguistics: localism and its revival in recent semantics and syntax, the origin of the term “polysemy” and its adoption through Bréal, and the difficulties attending the description of prefabs, idioms and other “fixed expressions”. This first part also includes studies dealing with representations of linguistic phenomena, whether these concern the treatment of local varieties (so-called patois) in French research, or the import and epistemological function of spatial representations in descriptions of linguistic time. Or again, now taking the word “representation” literally, the visual display of grammatical relations, in the form of the first syntactic diagrams. Part II presents case studies which involve wider concerns, of a social nature: the “from below” approach to the history of Chinese Pidgin English underlines the social roles of speakers and the diversity of speech situations, while the scrutiny of Lhomond’s Latin and French textbooks demonstrates the interplay of pedagogical practice, cross-linguistic comparison and descriptive innovation. An overview of early descriptions of Central Australian languages reveals a whole spectrum of humanist to positivist and antihumanist stances during the colonial age. An overarching framework is also at play in the anthropological perspective championed by Meillet, whose socially and culturally oriented semantics is shown to live on in Benveniste. The volume ends with a paper on Trần Đức Thảo, whose work is an original synthesis between phenomenology and Marxist semiology, wielded against the “idealistic” doctrine of Saussure.
