Bereits in den 20iger Jahren entwickelte Walter B. Cannon eine Krankheitstheorie, nach der Stress zu Störungen sowohl im zentralen Nervensystem als auch im endokrinen System führen und an der Entstehung vielerlei Krankheiten beteiligt ist. Auf dieser Grundlage konnte in den 50iger Jahren maßgeblich durch die Arbeit des Endokrinologen Hans Seyle der Begriff pathogener Stress an Popularität gewinnen. In Folge wurden weitere Forschungen und Entwicklungen forciert. Seyle und seine Anhänger postulierten, Stress sei ein durch Selbstmanagement beherrschbares Problem einer kapitalistischen Arbeitswelt. Dies führte damals in der Öffentlichkeit zu einer zivilkritischen Dynamik und Stress wurde zum Leitbegriff der damaligen präventionsorientierten Gesundheitspolitik. Doch diese frühen Erkenntnisse haben nicht zu einer Problemlösung geführt – im Gegenteil. Der aktuelle gesellschaftliche Wandel durch zunehmende Globalisierung, Flexibilisierung, Technisierung und Individualisierung, stellt für die Menschen zunehmend stressauslösende Spannungsfelder und Herausforderungen auf allen Ebenen dar. Dadurch haben laut Untersuchungen des Deutschen Resilienz-Zentrums 10% der deutschen Bevölkerung einen hohen Stresslevel bei einer gleichzeitig geringen Fähigkeit zur Stresserholung. Stress assoziierte Erkrankungen, wie Depression, chronische Schmerzen oder Substanzmittelmissbrauch stellen daher eine große Herausforderung des 21. Jahrhunderts dar. Die direkten und indirekten Kosten, die dadurch entstehen, belaufen sich alleine in Deutschland auf 300 Milliarden Euro pro Jahr. Trotz kontinuierlicher Fortschritte und Therapieangebote, kann diesen Erkrankungen unzureichend entgegengewirkt werden. Daher bekommen Prävention und Gesundheitsförderung immer mehr Aufmerksamkeit. Als Konzept dieser Gesundheitsförderung stellt die Erforschung von Resilienz hierbei eine zentrale Rolle.
