Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete (RC) structures possess inherent fire resistance due to relatively low thermal conductivity, high thermal capacity, and slower strength degradation of concrete with temperature. Nonetheless, fire exposure results in varying reduction in strength and stiffness RC members because of irreversible temperature induced degradation in mechanical properties concrete and rebar. Thus, uncertainty regarding extent of reduction in load bearing capacity RC structures (members) necessitates post-fire assessment of residual capacity to facilitate repair and (or) return to service conditions. Specifically, RC beams or slabs are particularly susceptible to fire damage arising from convective effects (hot gases) and impingement by flames near the ceiling, which do not affect vertical members as significantly. This PhD dissertation develops a comprehensive understanding on the residual response of fire damaged RC beams after exposure to combined effects of fire and structural loading through detailed experimental and numerical studies. A novel three stage approach to evaluate residual response of RC beams following fire exposure is conceptualized to overcome deficiencies in current assessment approaches. The three stages comprise of; Stage 1: evaluating the member response at room temperature during service (load) conditions as present prior to fire exposure; Stage 2: evaluating member response during heating and cooling phases as present in a fire incident, and during extended cool down phase of the member to simulate conditions as occurring after fire is extinguished or burnout conditions are attained; and Stage 3: evaluating residual response of the fire damaged member following complete cool down to room temperature. The proposed approach can account for the influence of critical factors such as, distinct temperature dependent material properties of concrete and rebar during heating, cooling, and residual phases, fire induced residual deformations, load level, and restraint conditions present during fire exposure in evaluating residual response of RC beams.Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to develop needed data for establishing applicability and validity of the proposed approach for tracing residual response. Material level tests were undertaken to establish temperature dependent bond strength relations for interfacial bond between rebar and concrete. Full scale fire resistance tests followed by residual capacity evaluation tests were conducted on six RC beams having different configurations. As part of numerical studies, a three-dimensional finite element based numerical model was developed to implement the proposed three-stage approach for evaluating residual response of fire exposed concrete beams, using general purpose software ABAQUS. The novelty of the developed model lies in explicit consideration of distinct thermomechanical properties of concrete and rebar during heating and cooling phase of fire exposure and residual (after cool down) phase, as well as in incorporation of plastic deflections occurring during fire exposure into post-fire residual response analysis of RC beams. Predictions from the developed model were validated against response parameters measured during tests published in literature and conducted as part of this study. The validated model was applied to conduct parametric studies to quantify the effect of critical parameters, namely, fire severity, load level, axial restraint, cross-sectional dimensions, and cover to reinforcement, on residual response of RC beams following fire exposure. Finally, findings from experimental and numerical studies, together with that reported in literature, were utilized to develop a five-step rational approach combining physical testing with simplified and advanced calculation methods, for practical post-fire assessment of residual capacity in concrete structures.

Book excerpt: This book describes a number of high-performance construction materials, including concrete, steel, fiber-reinforced cement, fiber-reinforced plastics, polymeric materials, geosynthetics, masonry materials and coatings. It discusses the scientific bases for the manufacture and use of these high-performance materials. Testing and application examples are also included, in particular the application of relatively new high-performance construction materials to design practice. Most books dealing with construction materials typically address traditional materials only rather than high-performance materials and, as a consequence, do not satisfy the increasing demands of today's society. On the other hand, books dealing with materials science are not engineering-oriented, with limited coverage of the application to engineering practice. This book is thus unique in reflecting the great advances made on high-performance construction materials in recent years. This book is appropriate for use as a textbook for courses in engineering materials, structural materials and civil engineering materials at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also suitable for use by practice engineers, including construction, materials, mechanical and civil engineers.

Book excerpt: Precast prestressed concrete (PC) construction provides numerous advantages over traditional reinforced concrete (RC) construction, in terms of speed of construction, better quality control, cost-effectiveness, better space utilization, and optimized production. Owing to these advantages, the use of PC construction in the built environment has increased significantly in recent decades. While the structural behavior of PC members is well understood at ambient temperatures, there is a lack of understanding on the evolution of fire induced restraint forces in PC beams and their effect on the fire resistance of PC beams. Further, the fire resistance of PC members is currently evaluated using prescriptive design approaches which do not account for all critical factors governing the fire response of PC beams, including realistic restraint conditions, and therefore, current fire resistance provisions may not provide realistic predictions of fire performance.℗ Therefore, a detailed experimental and numerical study is conducted to evaluate the evolution of fire induced restraint forces and to quantify their effect on the fire response of PC beams. Fire resistance tests were conducted on four PC beams under restrained and unrestrained end conditions. Test variables included fire exposure, restraint conditions, load level, and concrete strength. The fire response of the beams was traced throughout the fire exposure duration by measuring sectional temperatures, beam deflections, and fire induced restraint forces. All four beams were designed as per current building code recommendations to have a fire resistance of 4 hours, however, all four beams attained failure within 2 hours of fire exposure. A numerical model was developed for tracing the fire response of PC beams under specified fire, loading, and restraint conditions. The model accounts for critical factors governing the fire response of PC beams including fire-induced restraint forces, cracking and crushing of concrete, spalling, material and geometric non-linearity, and geometry of the beam. For modeling fire-induced restraint forces a new efficient spring idealization framework for connections is implemented. Also, the cracking and crushing of concrete is captured by developing a new modified adaptive temperature-dependent failure envelope.℗ The developed numerical model was validated by comparing response predictions from the model with measured data in fire tests. Results from these comparisons show that the model can capture the fire response of PC beams with reasonable accuracy in both thermal and structural domains. The validated numerical model is applied to carry out a series of parametric studies on the effect of fire-induced restraint forces on the response of PC beams. The effect of cross-sectional shape, support conditions, the gap in connection, level of prestress, and concrete cover thickness on the evolution of fire induced restraint forces is studied for PC and equivalent RC beams. Results from parametric studies show that current prescriptive codes and standards may over-predict fire resistance of PC beams by as high as 100%, PC beams develop 5% to 20% lower restraint forces than equivalent RC beams, and for PC beams with gaps of more than 50 mm experience minimal restraint forces. Also, the fire-induced restraint forces can be either beneficial or detrimental and can significantly alter the fire response of the PC beam, and therefore, should be included in the design process. Based on the results from the fire tests and parametric studies, simplified recommendations are proposed for evaluating the fire resistance of PC beams.

Book excerpt: With the increased use of concrete in high temperature environments, it is essential for engineers to have a knowledge of the properties and mathematical modelling of concrete in such extreme conditions. Bringing together, for the first time, vast amounts of data previously scattered throughout numerous papers and periodicals, this book provides, in two parts, a comprehensive and systematic review of both the properties and the mathematical modelling of concrete at high temperatures. Part I provides a comprehensive description of the material properties of concrete at high temperatures. Assuming only a basic knowledge of mathematics, the information is presented at an elementary level suitable for graduates of civil engineering or materials science. Part II describes the response of concrete to high temperatures in precise terms based on mathematical modelling of physical processes. Suitable for advanced graduate students, researchers and specialists, it presents detailed mathematical models of phenomena such as heat transfer, moisture diffusion, creep, volume changes, cracking and fracture. Concrete at High Temperatures will prove a valuable reference source to university researchers and graduate students in civil engineering and materials science, engineers in research laboratories, and practising engineers concerned with fire resistance, concrete structures for nuclear reactors and chemical technology vessels.

Variables under study were thickness of concrete cover over and tensile stress in the reinforcing steel, position of the steel, and type of concrete and steel used. Results after 15 winters of exposure of the first series of beams (Series A) indicated that the air-entrained beams were significantly more resistant to the weathering that the nonair-entrained beams, and that the beams with reinforcing steel having deformations conforming to ASTM Standard A 305 were more resistant to the weathering than those with reinforcing steel having old-style deformations. Results after 12 winters of exposure of the second series of beams (Series B) indicated that more exposure is needed to produce deterioration sufficient to permit unambiguous conclusions.
