Book excerpt: When Canada created a Dominion Parks Branch in 1911, it became the first country in the world to establish an agency devoted to managing its national parks. Over the past century this agency, now Parks Canada, has been at the center of important debates about the place of nature in Canadian nationhood and relationships between Canada s diverse ecosystems and its communities."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapper of Mountains follows the career of Dominion Land Surveyor Morrison Parsons Bridgland, who provided the first detailed maps of many regions of the Canadian Rockies. Between 1902 and 1930, this unheralded alpinist perfected phototopographical techniques to compile a series of mountaintop photographs during summers of field work. Mapper of Mountains also tells the story of the Rocky Mountain Repeat Photography Project, which studies the changes sustained in the Rockies, repeating the field work accomplished by Bridgland almost a century ago.

Book excerpt: Principal Photography by J. A. Kraulis Foreword by David Suzuki No other nation contains within its boundaries a pristine wilderness at once so varied and extensive. The best hope of preserving what is left of Canada`s wild country lies in its national parks. There are 37 parks in Canada`s national park system representing every province. J. A. Kraulis, one of Canada`s most respected photographers, travelled to nearly every corner of the land to record in 120 photographs, the extraordinary beauty of The National Parks of Canada. With authoritative text by Kevin McNamee of the Canadian Nature Federation, dozens of archival photographs and eleven full colour maps, The National Parks of Canada is both a celebration and a reminder that we need to protect Canada`s wilderness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boreal forest is one of the world's great ecosystems, stretching across North America and Eurasia in an unbroken band and containing about 25% of the world's closed canopy forests. The Kluane Boreal Forest Ecosystem Project was a 10-year study by nine of Canada's leading ecologists to unravel the impact of the snowshoe hare cycle on the plants and the other vertebrate species in the boreal forest. In much of the boreal forest, the snowshoe hare acts as a keystone herbivore, fluctuating in 9-10 year cycles, and dragging along secondary cycles in predators such as lynx and great-horned owls. By manipulating the ecosystem on a large scale from the bottom via fertilizer additions and from the top by predator exclosures, they have traced the plant-herbivore relationships and the predator-prey relationships in this ecosystem to try to answer the question of what drives small mammal population cycles. This study is unique in being large scale and experimental on a relatively simple ecosystem, with the overall goal of defining what determines community structure in the boreal forest. Ecosystem Dynamics of the Boreal Forest: The Kluane Project summarizes these findings, weaving new discoveries of the role of herbivores-turned-predators, compensatory plant growth, and predators-eating-predators with an ecological story rich in details and clear in its findings of a community where predation plays a key role in determining the fate of individuals and populations. The study of the Kluane boreal forest raises key questions about the scale of conservation required for boreal forest communities and the many mammals and birds that live there.

The park was established in 1976 to protect the South Nahanni River from hydroelectric development. It was expanded in 2009, and now includes a diverse array of unique landforms and important wildlife habitat. The park protects a significant portion of the Naha Dehé watershed, a traditional homeland of the Dene. As such, cooperative management is at the heart of operations for the park. Dehcho First Nations and Parks Canada work together on park management issues through the Naha Dehé Consensus Team."--exec. summ.
