Book Synopsis Research at the Intersection of the Physical and Life Sciences by : National Research Council
Download or read book Research at the Intersection of the Physical and Life Sciences written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, the natural sciences have been divided into two branches: the biological sciences and the physical sciences. Today, an increasing number of scientists are addressing problems lying at the intersection of the two. These problems are most often biological in nature, but examining them through the lens of the physical sciences can yield exciting results and opportunities. For example, one area producing effective cross-discipline research opportunities centers on the dynamics of systems. Equilibrium, multistability, and stochastic behavior-concepts familiar to physicists and chemists-are now being used to tackle issues associated with living systems such as adaptation, feedback, and emergent behavior. Research at the Intersection of the Physical and Life Sciences discusses how some of the most important scientific and societal challenges can be addressed, at least in part, by collaborative research that lies at the intersection of traditional disciplines, including biology, chemistry, and physics. This book describes how some of the mysteries of the biological world are being addressed using tools and techniques developed in the physical sciences, and identifies five areas of potentially transformative research. Work in these areas would have significant impact in both research and society at large by expanding our understanding of the physical world and by revealing new opportunities for advancing public health, technology, and stewardship of the environment. This book recommends several ways to accelerate such cross-discipline research. Many of these recommendations are directed toward those administering the faculties and resources of our great research institutions-and the stewards of our research funders, making this book an excellent resource for academic and research institutions, scientists, universities, and federal and private funding agencies.
Book Synopsis Physics in a New Era by : National Research Council
Download or read book Physics in a New Era written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-07-15 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics at the beginning of the twenty-first century has reached new levels of accomplishment and impact in a society and nation that are changing rapidly. Accomplishments have led us into the information age and fueled broad technological and economic development. The pace of discovery is quickening and stronger links with other fields such as the biological sciences are being developed. The intellectual reach has never been greater, and the questions being asked are more ambitious than ever before. Physics in a New Era is the final report of the NRC's six-volume decadal physics survey. The book reviews the frontiers of physics research, examines the role of physics in our society, and makes recommendations designed to strengthen physics and its ability to serve important needs such as national security, the economy, information technology, and education.

Download or read book Journal of Vibration Testing and System Dynamics written by Jan Awrejcewicz and published by L& H Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibration Testing and System Dynamics is an interdisciplinary journal serving as the forum for promoting dialogues among engineering practitioners and research scholars. As the platform for facilitating the synergy of system dynamics, testing, design, modeling, and education, the journal publishes high-quality, original articles in the theory and applications of dynamical system testing. The aim of the journal is to stimulate more research interest in and attention for the interaction of theory, design, and application in dynamic testing. Manuscripts reporting novel methodology design for modelling and testing complex dynamical systems with nonlinearity are solicited. Papers on applying modern theory of dynamics to real-world issues in all areas of physical science and description of numerical investigation are equally encouraged. Progress made in the following topics are of interest, but not limited, to the journal: Vibration testing and designDynamical systems and controlTesting instrumentation and controlComplex system dynamics in engineeringDynamic failure and fatigue theoryChemical dynamics and bio-systemsFluid dynamics and combustionPattern dynamicsNetwork dynamicsPlasma physics and plasma dynamicsControl signal synchronization and trackingBio-mechanical systems and devicesStructural and multi-body dynamicsFlow or heat-induced vibrationMass and energy transfer dynamicsWave propagation and testing
Book Synopsis Life and Physical Sciences Research for a New Era of Space Exploration by : National Research Council
Download or read book Life and Physical Sciences Research for a New Era of Space Exploration written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to requests from Congress, NASA asked the National Research Council to undertake a decadal survey of life and physical sciences in microgravity. Developed in consultation with members of the life and physical sciences communities, the guiding principle for the study is to set an agenda for research for the next decade that will allow the use of the space environment to solve complex problems in life and physical sciences so as to deliver both new knowledge and practical benefits for humankind as we become a spacefaring people. The project's statement of task calls for delivery of two books-an interim report and a final survey report. Although the development of specific recommendations is deferred until the final book, this interim report does attempt to identify programmatic needs and issues to guide near-term decisions that are critical to strengthening the organization and management of life and physical sciences research at NASA.

Book Synopsis Recapturing a Future for Space Exploration by : National Research Council

This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than four decades have passed since a human first set foot on the Moon. Great strides have been made in our understanding of what is required to support an enduring human presence in space, as evidenced by progressively more advanced orbiting human outposts, culminating in the current International Space Station (ISS). However, of the more than 500 humans who have so far ventured into space, most have gone only as far as near-Earth orbit, and none have traveled beyond the orbit of the Moon. Achieving humans' further progress into the solar system had proved far more difficult than imagined in the heady days of the Apollo missions, but the potential rewards remain substantial. During its more than 50-year history, NASA's success in human space exploration has depended on the agency's ability to effectively address a wide range of biomedical, engineering, physical science, and related obstacles-an achievement made possible by NASA's strong and productive commitments to life and physical sciences research for human space exploration, and by its use of human space exploration infrastructures for scientific discovery. The Committee for the Decadal Survey of Biological and Physical Sciences acknowledges the many achievements of NASA, which are all the more remarkable given budgetary challenges and changing directions within the agency. In the past decade, however, a consequence of those challenges has been a life and physical sciences research program that was dramatically reduced in both scale and scope, with the result that the agency is poorly positioned to take full advantage of the scientific opportunities offered by the now fully equipped and staffed ISS laboratory, or to effectively pursue the scientific research needed to support the development of advanced human exploration capabilities. Although its review has left it deeply concerned about the current state of NASA's life and physical sciences research, the Committee for the Decadal Survey on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space is nevertheless convinced that a focused science and engineering program can achieve successes that will bring the space community, the U.S. public, and policymakers to an understanding that we are ready for the next significant phase of human space exploration. The goal of this report is to lay out steps and develop a forward-looking portfolio of research that will provide the basis for recapturing the excitement and value of human spaceflight-thereby enabling the U.S. space program to deliver on new exploration initiatives that serve the nation, excite the public, and place the United States again at the forefront of space exploration for the global good.
