Book excerpt: We have developed a phenomenological model for critical condensate saturation. This model reveals that critical condensate saturation is a function of surface tension and contact angle hysteresis. On the other hand, residual oil saturation does not have such a dependency. Consequently, the selection of fluids in laboratory measurements for gas condensate systems should be made with care.

While the study of single phase flow in a fractured or a layered medium can be pursued by some kind of averaging process, there is no meaning to averaging two-phase flow when capillarity is an active force. For a two-layer system comprised of high and low permeable layers, the performance of gas-oil gravity can be less efficient than the homogeneous low permeable medium. On the other hand, heterogeneity may enhance water imbibition due to capillarity. Due to the above and various other complexities, current tools for predicting the performance of fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs are not reliable. Based on the research work carried out at the Reservoir Engineering Research Institute, and some other Institutions, a good deal of progress has been made in recent years. But still we are a long way from good predictive reservoir models. In this final report, we summarize some of our achievements in the understanding of multiphase flow in fractured media. Since some of the features of two-phase flow in fractured and layered many are similar due to the capillary forces, the work includes progress in both types of media. There are some basic issues of flow in both fractured and unfractured media that are currently unresolved. These issues include: (1) new phase formation such as the formation of liquid phase in gas condensate reservoirs, and gas phase formation in solution gas drive process and (2) composition variation due to thermal convection and diffusion processes. In the following, a brief summary of our findings in the last three years during the course of the project is presented.

Book excerpt: This report covers Task 3, Immiscible gas-oil flow in fractured/layered porous media, Part 1, Viscous displacement in fractured porous media: Experiments and Analysis of experiments and Task 5, Simulation of fractured reservoirs, Dual-porosity simulation incorporating reinfiltration and capillary continuity concepts, Part 3, Interaction between grid cells. In some fractured reservoirs, a gas pressure gradient of the order of 0.1 psi/ft may be established in the fractures due to flow. Such a pressure gradient could result in recovery enhancement of the matrix oil. Several tests were conducted to study viscous displacement in fractured porous media. These tests included both gravity drainage with free gas displacement and forced gas displacement. The results show that there is considerable recovery improvement due to viscous displacement. Numerical results are in very good agreement with the experimental data. In Task 5, the authors propose a method which accounts for reinfiltration and capillary continuity not only within a grid cell, but also between various grid cells. A reinfiltration term is added to the dual-porosity model and the exchange term between the matrix and the fracture is calculated in a simple manner. Four example problems demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method.

Book excerpt: Our 1993 third quarter report discusses the results of our work on: (1) gas-oil gravity drainage in layered media; and, (2) the influence of viscous forces on gas-oil flow in fractured porous media. For sometime, we have been working on the incorporation of reinfiltration and capillary continuity concepts in a dual-porosity model. A simple and accurate technique has been developed for this purpose. The experiments on gas-oil gravity drainage in layered media are intended to: (1) verify our theoretical analysis; (2) provide more insight; and, (3) provide a guide for the simulation of gas-oil gravity drainage at field scale. On the first objective, the experiments confirm that gas-oil gravity drainage could result in a downward gas fingering phenomenon. Without capillary pressure, downward gas fingering could not realize. The experiments also show that drainage from a less permeable layer would be an extremely slow process. This is similar to the drainage performance of matrix blocks in fractured porous media. Apparently, relative permeability to gas (i.e. gas mobility) may be important for flow in layered porous media. The project on the effect of viscous forces on gas-oil displacement in fractured porous media has taken longer than anticipated. For the first time, in gravity drainage experiments of the matrix-fracture configuration used in this project, we could not obtain reproducible results. After several tests, we teamed that the surface tension of the normal-decane/air system changes in the presence of the coating cover which was used in the experimental assembly of this project. We removed the coating. The experiments can now be reproduced. The data show that there is a strong effect of viscous forces on matrix/fracture flow. A small imposed pressure gradient results in a substantial amount of oil recovery. After performing 3-4 more tests, the data will be analyzed and an appropriate model will be developed to relate experimental data to field conditions.

Book excerpt: A number of experiments have been performed to study water injection in fractured porous media. These experiments reveal that: (1) the co-current imbibition may be the primary flow process in water-wet fractured media, and (2) the imbibition may result in over 20 percent recovery from very tight rock (Austin Chalk with K{sub ma} of the order of 0.01 md) for an imbibition period of about 2 months. Theoretical consideration reveal that the exponential function of Aronofsky et al. [''A Model for the Mechanism of Oil Recovery from Porous Matrix Due to Water Invasion In Fractured Reservoirs, '' Trans. AIME (1958) 213, 17-19] does not describe the early-time, but may represent the late-time recovery.

Book excerpt: The integral equation describing the nucleation and growth of bubbles in a supersaturated binary liquid mixture under constant expansion rate is considered. In case of macroscopically large number of microscopic nucleation sites, the solution is shown to exhibit weak dependence on the expansion rate in contradiction with experimental data. With few nucleation sites, the supersaturation extremum agrees with experimental data.

Book excerpt: Progress reports are presented for project 2-supersaturation, critical saturation and residual gas saturation in porous media and for project 5-simulation of fractured reservoirs. Under project 2, a visual high-pressure core-holder has been designed and constructed to be used in critical gas saturation and some other measurements. The apparatus has been used to measure critical gas saturation for a low viscosity mixture. These measurements reconfirm the investigators' previously published data that critical gas saturation for low viscosity fluids are low-around 1 percent. The apparatus is being currently used to measure critical gas saturation of an 11 API oil. Unlike light oils, heavy oil reservoirs, especially fractured heavy oil reservoirs might have an extremely high recovery efficiency with solution gas-drive. The critical gas saturation is an important element of recovery efficiency for such reservoirs.

Book excerpt: Fractured rock is the host or foundation for innumerable engineered structures related to energy, water, waste, and transportation. Characterizing, modeling, and monitoring fractured rock sites is critical to the functioning of those infrastructure, as well as to optimizing resource recovery and contaminant management. Characterization, Modeling, Monitoring, and Remediation of Fractured Rock examines the state of practice and state of art in the characterization of fractured rock and the chemical and biological processes related to subsurface contaminant fate and transport. This report examines new developments, knowledge, and approaches to engineering at fractured rock sites since the publication of the 1996 National Research Council report Rock Fractures and Fluid Flow: Contemporary Understanding and Fluid Flow. Fundamental understanding of the physical nature of fractured rock has changed little since 1996, but many new characterization tools have been developed, and there is now greater appreciation for the importance of chemical and biological processes that can occur in the fractured rock environment. The findings of Characterization, Modeling, Monitoring, and Remediation of Fractured Rock can be applied to all types of engineered infrastructure, but especially to engineered repositories for buried or stored waste and to fractured rock sites that have been contaminated as a result of past disposal or other practices. The recommendations of this report are intended to help the practitioner, researcher, and decision maker take a more interdisciplinary approach to engineering in the fractured rock environment. This report describes how existing tools-some only recently developed-can be used to increase the accuracy and reliability of engineering design and management given the interacting forces of nature. With an interdisciplinary approach, it is possible to conceptualize and model the fractured rock environment with acceptable levels of uncertainty and reliability, and to design systems that maximize remediation and long-term performance. Better scientific understanding could inform regulations, policies, and implementation guidelines related to infrastructure development and operations. The recommendations for research and applications to enhance practice of this book make it a valuable resource for students and practitioners in this field.

Book excerpt: Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fracturesâ€"a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storageâ€"has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? Among other topics, the committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling, and it provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. With a practical and multidisciplinary outlook, this volume will be welcomed by geologists, petroleum geologists, geoengineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, researchers, educators and students in these fields, and public officials involved in geological projects.

A list outlining these efforts is presented including: (1) The design and planning of the next phase of the two-phase flow experiments have moved forward. The necessary modifications to allow the use of wire-wrapped screens have been made. The flow loop and the data acquisition system are currently being tested and the new experiments are about to commence. (2) Work on obtaining exact well models for a horizontal well or a well of any general profile has continued. (3) Work on the application of horizontal wells in gas condensate reservoirs has progressed. The available methods and models are being critically evaluated with the aid of simulation runs. (4) Research work on developing coarse grid methods to study cresting in horizontal wells has continued. Correlations for optimum grid size, breakthrough time, and post breakthrough behavior (i.e. water-oil ratio) are being developed and tested for the problem of water cresting. (5) The Ph. D. project on three-dimensional flexible grid simulator (FLEX) was successfully defended in June. The FLEX simulator will be used in future studies as well as in future developments. The dissertation report will be submitted soon to the US DOE. This quarterly report is based on the last activity listed above. It shows the advantage of the new flexible grid simulator.

Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
