Book excerpt: Abstract: The opening of China's domestic market in the late 1980's and the internationalization and rapid development of its market not only provided new technological innovations and foreign capital, but also opened the market to foreign competition. This competitive rivalry often resulted in the purchase, loss of controlling shares and/or the eventual disappearance of many well-known Chinese domestic brands. China's admission to the World Trade Organization further exposed the country's internal market to intense competition from world-class international brands. Increased competition and strict international standards has forced China to examine its own international competitive position, as well as strengthen the international competitiveness of domestic brands. In recent years, numerous quality issues with Chinese- made products has attracted the attention of global consumers, and has negatively influenced international consumer opinion towards "Made in China." China can no longer passively remain at the lowest end of the Value Chain, as the "World's Low-Cost Factory", but rather must encourage and promote the transformation of private enterprises from low-cost Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM), to the producers of competitive brands with highly recognized quality standards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original book presents in-depth research into thirteen successful Chinese private enterprises through interviews with their founder-entrepreneurs. While Chinese economic growth has focused primarily on governmental policies and institutional factors, Leadership of Chinese Private Enterprises proposes that the success of these firms was primarily due to the ‘visible hands’ of these entrepreneurs. The authors present insights into the managerial realities of four separate industries- Financial and insurance, IT and e-commerce, construction and real estate, and consumer goods. Through a critical evaluation of interviews, this book identifies the managerial recipe for entrepreneurial success in competitive and inhospitable environments and offers a model of private firm leadership and leadership principles that guide their strategies and relationships.

It is based on surveys and interviews carried out in four locations in China where private sector development is relatively advanced. These studies were supplemented by discussions with entrepreneurs, industry associations, and government officials. The report focuses on three main themes: the structure of private enterprises, the enabling environment for their development and, access to financing. For each of these areas, the report presents an analysis of constraints on private sector development and outlines an agenda for addressing these constraints. The report recommends that, in order to encourage continuing private sector growth, the government should create a level playing field for all enterprises by intervening less and focusing on improved commercial legislation and more open markets. Financial institutions must develop to serve the private sector, and private enterprises need to mature and improve their corporate governance, in order to derive the most benefit from improvements in the business environment.

Book excerpt: One of the most important outcomes of market reforms in China over the past 20 years has been the emergence of a significant domestic private sector, which now accounts for almost a third of China's GDP and is by far the country's most important source of employment growth. This book is the first in-depth analysis of the management and operation of these domestic private firms, which are defined as companies or organizations created by PRC citizens, including township enterprises and collectives. The book provides a comprehensive and multidisciplinary perspective on the factors important to the successful operation and growth of these firms. It begins with a review of the literature on the topic in three different disciplines - economics, sociology, and management - each followed by several chapters covering recent developments in these areas. Featuring contributions by distinguished scholars and China experts, the work concludes with an insightful chapter on the future of China's public sector in the global economy.

Book excerpt: This book is an empirical study on the relationship between private enterprises, entrepreneurs and the government in P. R. China. The two authors conducted a detailed survey of enterprises and entrepreneurs in Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. Although it was only conducted in a medium sized city, the survey provides a rare source of information on matched entrepreneur-enterprise pairs. It provides detailed information on management, performance, enterprise-government relationship, as well as entrepreneurs' personal information and measurements of various psychological parameters. With this first-hand information, the authors analyzed several interesting issues concerning enterprise-entrepreneur-government relationships. Readers will gain an understanding of the following topics: Why and how does China have such special enterprise-entrepreneur-government relationships? Do enterprises' political connections in the form of entrepreneurs' political status help improve the performances of these enterprises? Which of the surveyed entrepreneurs could become members of the People's Congress and the People's Political Consulting Conference? How do entrepreneurs feel when they are faced with greater government intervention? How will China move ahead in the ongoing reform and development in the light of the enterprise-entrepreneur-government relationship? This book examines the way in which China's enterprise-entrepreneur-government relationship helps enterprises develop in a transitional market. In the appendix to this book, one of the authors, Ming Lu, provides evidence, based on data from listed companies, that having political connections can help enterprises enter the markets of provinces other than their place of registration. However, this political connection also distorts the market by giving the entrepreneurs more opportunities to develop their business. At the same time, those entrepren eurs who face interventions from the government also shoulder greater costs in the form of loss of psychological happiness. The inference of this book is that at some point in the foreseeable future, China will gradually build its market system and integrate its domestic markets, so that private enterprises will no longer rely so heavily on their political connections.

This book illustrates certain aspects and case studies of China's technological developments and further analyzes them under various areas like coal energy, housing, connectivity, digital and space technologies. Furthermore, it examines technological developments in the periphery of China, focusing especially on Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). This book does not pretend to be comprehensive in its coverage albeit surveys a spectrum of sectors in China and Hong Kong to get an idea of their developments. By peering into China through the mainland continental perspective and also looking into China from its periphery (e.g., 'Greater China' perspectives from HKSAR), this book provides readers with the broad contours of technological development in China through a multidisciplinary area studies perspective.

Book excerpt: An empirical study was undertaken (a) to examine the characteristics, influencing factors, and effectiveness of a distinctive Chinese management model adopted by the newly founded private enterprises in mainland China, as well as (b) to test the "fit" notion in contingency theory. The study was based on a random sample of 124 standardized personal interviews with CEOs of Chinese industrial and service companies in Beijing and Shanghai. The standardized questionnaire mainly contained the Aston structure scales (Pugh and Hickson 1976) and Khandwalla's (1977) management schedules. Besides, three case examples were studied including one state-owned bank and two private enterprises. Using AMOS structural equation modeling, size, mass-technology and uncertainty, as well as CEO need for achievement, environmental constraints and selected Chinese characteristics, were specified as influencing factors of "bureaucracy" and managerial practices, which included strategic orientation, leadership style, decision-making, communication and subcontracting. Another model analyzed the influence of various key success factors on organizational effectiveness. The findings provided support for the re-adoption of a distinctive Chinese management model in private companies, characterized by autocratic leadership, low formalization, "Chinese entrepreneurship" and network-based "webs". Private enterprises also tended to readopt and emphasize traditional Chinese family-related values. The distinctiveness of this model was, ceteris paribus, due to this emphasis on familism, which had a direct impact on organizational design and an indirect influence through its negative association with company size, which in turn significantly covaried with organizational design. This family-based ownership model was positively associated with organizational effectiveness. As regards contingency theory, the "traditional" fit hypotheses could not be rejected. In addition, less effective companies were not necessarily in "misfit". "Appropriate" structure, together with an optimizing planning style and firm age, were positively associated with performance. Managerial recommendations were codified in a CHINA(c) strategy framework for high effectiveness.

Book excerpt: This book provides a rare integrative interpretation of government-enterprise relations in China, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Focusing on the government and its principal goals, it describes the transition of government-enterprise relations and highlights the embedding of the entities of government and enterprises in specific political, economic and social environments. Further, it analyzes how the government’s institutional arrangement regulates the behavior of various types of enterprises with different structures, and the logic mechanisms such institutional arrangements use to change and shape government-enterprise relations. Based on these issues and logic mechanisms, the book points out the complexity of government-enterprise relations and the diversity of their transition path, thus reflecting some typical features in the overall reform of China and discussing specific factors related to China’s social development experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an open world, the socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics features openness. If China expects to participate and play a leading role in the governance of global economy in economic globalization, it needs to adopt a common discourse to foster its economy to 'go global.' The common discourse can be obtained in a market economy as well as among developing countries eager to seek development. This book attempts to theorize the socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics by absorbing critically the well-established economic theories worldwide. The selective learning of western economics in terms of theories and categories is based on China's full confidence in the theory, path and system with the adherence to the core socialist values as a presupposition. The author argues that the socialist political economy with Chinese characteristics in the new era is a Marxist political economy in contemporary China. The book clearly states that the construction of its theoretical system should combine Marxist theories with China's practice, especially after the reform and opening-up; progress with the times and target the principal social contradiction in the new era; and address China's challenges in growing stronger, or in other words, modernization. This book is a valuable reading on the new development of the various schools of thoughts on China's political economy over the last few decades. It can be used as a textbook for college students, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of economics, China studies, politics and sociology.
