Book excerpt: Recent advances in the ultrashort laser technology have spawned a series of new directions of research in atomic and molecular physics. This work compounds two studies on the control and probing of atomic matter by ultrafast laser pulses. The first study is concerned with the control of quantum wavepackets focusing by chirped, ultrashort laser pulses. The ability to control wavepacket focusing is important for the achievement of specific excitation pathways, for controlling chemical reactivity or even molecular synthesis. In this work, we present a general method for wavepacket control in the weak field limit. Numerical simulations involving the ICN molecule confirm our theoretical framework. The second study refers to the ionization of sodium Rydberg states via half-cycle pulses (HCPs). For this process, our full quantum-mechanical calculations demonstrate an asymmetry in both ionization rates and ionization spectrum between the downhill (Stark red-shifted) and uphill (Stark blue- shifted) states. The asymmetry is explained by appealing to a semi-classical model of the interfering ionization pathways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation research is an investigation of the strong optical field ionization of atoms and ions by 120-fs, 614-run laser pulses and 130-fs, 800-nm laser pulses. The experiments have shown ionization that is enhanced above the predictions of sequential tunneling models for He{sup +2}, Ne{sup +2} and Ar{sup +2}. The ion yields for He{sup +l}, Ne{sup +l} and Ar{sup +l} agree well with the theoretical predictions of optical tunneling models. Investigation of the polarization dependence of the ionization indicates that the enhancements are consistent with a nonsequential ionization mechanism in which the linearly polarized field drives the electron wavefunction back toward the ion core and causes double ionization through inelastic e-2e scattering. These investigations have initiated a number of other studies by other groups and are of current scientific interest in the fields of high-irradiance laser-matter interactions and production of high-density plasmas. This work involved: (1) Understanding the characteristic nature of the ion yields produced by tunneling ionization through investigation of analytic solutions for tunneling at optical frequencies. (2) Extensive characterization of the pulses produced by 614-nm and 800-ran ultrashort pulse lasers. Absolute calibration of the irradiance scale produced shows the practicality of the inverse problem--measuring peak laser irradiance using ion yields. (3) Measuring the ion yields for three noble gases using linear, circular and elliptical polarizations of laser pulses at 614-nm and 800-nm. The measurements are some of the first measurements for pulse widths as low as 120-fs.

Shapiro edited the book entitled Ultrashort Light Pulses (Topics Appl. Phys., Vol. 18), which was written by eight experts in the field. Six years later, Charles V. Shank added a bibliography (1980-1983) in the second edition with approximately one thousand new references. During the past decade the field has grown so rapidly that a completely new book had to be written. In particular, the reduction of the time scale of light pulses into the femtosecond range has opened up new experimental possibilities never even foreseen in the preceding literature. The vast literature with countless ideas and applications makes it impossible for a single person to write a comprehensive review. Nine scientists, actively working in the field since its beginning, have decided to join forces to prepare a new book describing the present state of the art. Emphasis is placed on the generation and numerous applications of ultrashort laser pulses. This book covers a wide area of science: physics, engineering, chemistry, and biology. The various chapters and sections are prepared in each case such that the reader is given a brief introduction to the specific subject. Ample references for a more detailed study are given at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: This book describes the ultra-short laser–matter interactions from the subtle atomic motion to the generation of extreme pressures inside the bulk of a transparent crystal. It is the successor to Femtosecond Laser–Matter Interactions: Theory, Experiment and Applications (2011). Explanation and experimental verification of the exceptional technique for the phase transformations under high pressure are in the core of the book. The novel phase formation occurs along the unique solid-plasmasolid transformation path: the memory of the initial state is lost after conversion to plasma. New phase forms from chaos during the cooling to the ambient. The pressure-affected material remains detained inside a pristine crystal at the laboratory tabletop. Unique super-dense aluminium and new phases of silicon were created by the confined micro-explosions. The text also describes the recent studies that used the quasi-non-diffracting Bessel beams. The applications comprise the new high-pressure material formation and micromachining. The book is an appealing source for readers interested in the cutting-edge research exploring extreme conditions and creating nanostructures at the laboratory tabletop.

Book excerpt: The aim of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was to bring together scientists and students working in the field of laser matter interactions in order to review and stimulate developmentoffundamental science with ultra-short pulse lasers. New techniques of pulse compression and colliding-pulse mode-locking have made possible the construction of lasers with pulse lengths in the femtosecond range. Such lasers are now in operation at several research laboratories in Europe and the United States. These laser facilities present a new and exciting research direction with both pure and applied science components. In this ASI the emphasis is on fundamental processes occurring in the interaction of short laser pulses with atoms, molecules, solids, and plasmas. In the case of laser-atom (molecule) interactions, high power lasers provide the first access to extreme high-intensity conditions above 10'8 Watts/em', a new frontier for nonlinear interaction of photons with atoms and molecules. New phenomena observed include multiphoton ionization processes, atomic collisions in the presence of a strong laser field, Coulomb explosion following rapid ionization of a molecule and the production of high harmonics of the laser source. Another important topic reviewed in this ASI is the lasercooling ofatoms.

Book excerpt: This book represents the first comprehensive treatment of the subject, covering the theoretical principles, present experimental status and important applications of short-pulse laser-matter interactions.Femtosecond lasers have undergone dramatic technological advances over the last fifteen years, generating a whole host of new research activities under the theme of “ultrafast science”. The focused light from these devices is so intense that ordinary matter is torn apart within a few laser cycles. This book takes a close-up look at the exotic physical phenomena which arise as a result of this new form of “light-matter” interaction, covering a diverse set of topics including multiphoton ionization, rapid heatwaves, fast particle generation and relativistic self-channeling. These processes are central to a number of exciting new applications in other fields, such as microholography, optical particle accelerators and photonuclear physics.Repository for numerical models described in Chapter 6 can be found at www.fz-juelich.de/zam/cams/plasma/SPLIM/./a

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the results of our interest in the ?eld of ultrashort laser pulses interaction with matter. The aim of our monograph was to build the balanced description of the thermal transport phenomena generated by laser pulses shorter than the characteristic relaxation time. In the book we explore the matter on the quark, nuclear as well atomic scales. Also on the cosmic scale (Planck Era) the thermal disturbance shorter than the Planck time creates the new picture of the Universe. The mathematics, especially PDE, are the main tool in the description of the ultrashort thermal phenomena. Two types of the PDE: parabolic and hyperbolic partial di?erential equations are of special interest in the study of the thermal processes. We assume a moderate knowledge of basic Fourier and d’Alembert eq- tions. The scope of the book is deliberately limited to the background of the quantum mechanics equations: Schr ̈ odinger and Klein-Gordon. In this book the attosecond laser pulses are the main source of the dist- bance of the thermal state of the matter. Recently, the attosecond laser pulses constitute a novel tool for probing processes taking place on the time scale of electron motion inside atoms. The research presented in this book appears to provide the basic tools and concepts for attosecond thermal dynamics. Nevertheless much research is still needed to make this emerging ?eld routinely applicable for a broad range of processes on atomic and subatomic scales.

Book excerpt: The state of the art in integrated optics comprises planar waveguides---both channels and slabs---are made on the surface of a chip, and are henceforth inherently limited to two dimensions. Multiphoton photosensitivity induced by focused ultrashort laser pulses deep into the bulk of transparent materials was proposed in 1996 as an effective tool to make guided wave optics in these media, therefore promising true 3-D guided wave optic capability. In the past decade, various glasses---amorphous media---were used in these investigations, but little attention was paid to crystalline media. In fact, prior to this thesis, quartz was the only crystalline medium whose bulk interactions with ultrafast laser pulses were studied. This dissertation presents in-depth studies of two optically important crystals, namely, lithium niobate, a strong quadratic nonlinear optic and elecrooptic medium, and silicon, the base platform of microelectronic circuits, with strong cubic nonlinearity and 10,000 higher Raman gain than silica. We present a three-step picture for the process of bulk ultrafast laser matter interaction, that will be affected by parameters of a 7-D space. This interpretation led us to recognizing the importance of three parameters, namely wavelength, polarization and pulse width, that were mostly overlooked prior to this research. We employed three classes of ultrafast lasers, namely, near IR low repetition rate, near IR high repetition rate, and mid IR low repetition rate to form guided wave optics in lithium niobate and crystalline silicon. The experiments on silicon were the first of its kind, while our lithium niobate research demonstrated bulk lithium niobate waveguides exhibiting losses as low as 0.6 dB/cm and formed at a rate of 46 mm/s, a 500-fold improvement of fabrication speed over concurrent studies elsewhere. The evidence of cumulative heat effects in high repetition rate laser study of crystals is presented for the first time. In addition, using optical microscopy, electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, we provide evidences that have led to the discovery of two new phenomena in the bulk ultrafast laser matter interaction, namely formation of nanocrystals as well as self organized periodic structures in crystals.

Book excerpt: Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

Book excerpt: The SPECIFIC method a fast and accurate method for generating shaped femtosecond laser pulses. The femtosecond pulses are user specified from pulse parameters in the temporal domain. The measured spectral and recovered temporal phase and amplitudes from SEA TADPOLE are compared with the theoretical pulse profile from the user specified input. The SPECIFIC method has been shown to be a technique that can generate a diverse array of spectral/temporal phase and amplitude as well as polarization pulse shapes for numerous scientific applications. The spatio -temporal -spectral properties of focusing femtosecond laser pulses are studied for several pulse shapes that are important for non-linear spectroscopic studies. We have shown with scanning SEA TADPOLE that the spatio-spectral phase of focusing double pulse profile changes across the laterally across the beam profile. The spectral features of the sinusoidal spectral phase shaped pulse has been shown to tilt at with a changing angle away from the focus of the lens. Using spatio-spectral coupling, we have shown that multiple spatio-temporal foci can be generated along and perpendicular to the focusing direction of a femtosecond laser pulse. The spatial position of the spatio-temporal foci is controlled optically. Using sinusoidal spectral phase modulated pulse trains fragment ion production from Benzonitrile parent molecule can be controlled. A spectral transmission window perturbed the temporal pulse amplitudes resulting in fragment ion production dependant on spectral window position. The spectral window ion production was shown to also be dependant on temporal phase sequence.

Book excerpt: With the development of lasers that can generate light 11 14 pulses ranging from 10- - 10- sec duration, and capable of 13 peak powers in excess of 10 watts scientists have been able to investigate the interactions of light with matter in a time and power domain not previously possible. These ultrashort laser pulses provide a powerful tool for the study of chemical phenomena at the most fundamental level. Many of the elementary processes of importance in chemistry including energy dissipa tion, molecular motions, structural and chemical changes occur on a very short time scale and thus require special approaches. Th~ use of ultrashort laser pulses to perturb and to probe systems of interest affords a direct approach to the time reso lution of very rapid chemical phenomena. It was recognition of the impact of these relatively new approaches to chemical phenomena that motivated NATO to sponsor a meeting on the applications of picosecond spectroscopy in chemistry. The primary aim of the NATO workshop was to gain some perspective on the status of the field in terms of present research activities, technological developments and if possible the difficult task of sensing future directions. The way we decided to approach these issues was to gather together the main contributors to the field, fortunately many of whom were able to attend, to present their work and to participate in what turned out to be lively discussions of the field.
