Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Talk by a Plain Man Three months previous to my starting this work, I'had not thought of writing what I am placing before the public; although I have felt for years that Christians as a body should lift up their voice to expose the sins of the Churches, and show where they originate. As soon asi felt sure thatit was of the Lord that I should write, I set to work. It is not hard to see where and how the enemy of our souls has worked through all ages to'destroy the souls of men. In the first place, we may oh serve a general back-sliding, a falling from grace in our Churches. I 'know not of one Church that is of one hundred years' standing, but has forsaken the old paths of our fore fathers. Religion has, as a general thing. Book excerpt: “Never has a President of the United States, or any head of state for that matter, been so totally revealed, so completely documented” (Robert A. Arthur). Plain Speaking is the bestselling book based on conversations between Merle Miller and the thirty-third President of the United States, Harry S. Truman. From these interviews, as well as others who knew him over the years, Miller transcribes Truman’s feisty takes on everything from his personal life, military service, and political career to the challenges he faced in taking the office during the final days of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War. Using a series of taped discussions from 1962 that never aired on television, Plain Speaking takes an opportunity to deliver exactly how Mr. Truman felt about the presidency, and his thoughts in his later years on his accomplishments and the legacy he left behind. “The values of Plain Speaking, on the whole, are those of the highest form of political communication: the bull session. As with all good bull sessions, what is said here ranges widely in quality and seriousness, as one should expect when dealing with a complex man.” —The New York Times “Plain Speaking has a nostalgic, downhome quality of good friends gossiping over the back fence, or saying their piece of a twilight eve rocking on the porch—and if those fellas back in Washington have their secret machines running, well, they won’t like what they overhear. Not one little bit.” —Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernism is typically associated with novelty and urbanity. So what happens when poets identify small communities and local languages with the spirit of transnational modernity? Are vernacular poetries inherently provincial or implicitly xenophobic? How did modernist poets use vernacular language to re-imagine the relations between people, their languages, and the communities in which they live? Nations of Nothing But Poetry answers these questions through case studies of British, Caribbean, and American poetries from the 1920s through the 1990s. With a combination of fresh insights and attentive close readings, Matthew Hart presents a new theory of a "synthetic vernacular"-writing that explores the aesthetic and ideological tensions within modernism's dual commitments to the local and the global. The result is an invigorating contribution to the field of transnational modernist studies. Chapters focus on a mixture of canonical and non-canonical writers, combining new literary histories--such as the story of how Melvin B. Tolson, while a resident of Oklahoma, was appointed Poet Laureate of Liberia--with analyses of poems by Gertrude Stein, W. H. Auden, Ezra Pound, and T. S. Eliot. More broadly, the book reveals how the language of modernist poetry was shaped by the incompletely globalized nature of a world in which the nation-state continued to be a primary mediator of cultural and political identity, even as its authority was challenged as never before. Through deft juxtaposition, Hart develops a new interpretation of modernist poetry in English-one that disrupts the critical opposition between nationalism and the transnational, paving the way for a political history of modernist cosmopolitanism.

It is a result of five years at Charlie Corbett’s consultancy, Bullfinch Media, where he helped convince executives that speaking plainly, thoughtfully, and behaving with humanity, is the best way to win business, boost morale and advance careers. It provides carefully detailed wisdom on how to write well, speak publicly and stand out in your job, as well as how to craft compelling communications, make the best of social media and handle the press. The Art of Plain Speaking aims to improve the experience faced by many in the modern workplace, a world where senior management are entirely absent from the shop floor – replaced by indecipherable emails from HR – and where people speak in esoteric corporate riddles, believing that sounding clever is more productive than speaking clearly.

"The LA who can draft pleadings is valuable to the lawyer and to the legal profession". And those pleadings should be "concise, powerful, and communicative".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are pleased to present this never before published collection from the one and only, Napoleon Hill. Along with other never before published material, this volume includes the speech that inspired the worldwide bestseller Think and Grow Rich. With a foreword by Napoleon’s grandson Dr. J.B. Hill and introductory comments by Don Green, Director of The Napoleon Hill Foundation, personal letters from family members and Senator Jennings Randolph, this fascinating exploration of the speeches given by the pioneer of the personal development movement is packed with a wealth of information. It is a revealing look at one man’s quest for understanding why some men succeed, why others do not, and what makes success something that can be replicated. This collection will provide you with some of Napoleon’s finest speeches including: What I Have Learned From Analyzing 10,000 People The Man Who Has Had no Chance The Commencement Address at Salem College in Salem, West Virginia, 1922—likely his best-remembered and most- influential speech. Napoleon Hill dedicated much of his life to solving what he called “the most stupendous problem confronting the human race today.” That is, “How can I get what I want?” As W. Clement Stone and thousands of others can attest, Hill succeeded in this venture, and we now have a success philosophy that Andrew Carnegie once saw as a possibility. The pages within this book will tell you of the origins of a personal development legacy.
