Book Synopsis Social Reform, Sexuality and the State by : Patricia Uberoi
Download or read book Social Reform, Sexuality and the State written by Patricia Uberoi and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1996 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A substantial contribution to the debate on the role of gender studies in the context of the development of Indian society is offered in this volume. The contributors highlight the problematic nature of the dual role the state is expected to play: on one hand it is vested with the responsibility for social reform; on the other it is seen as representing and furthering the interests of social groups based on race, class, caste or sex. This duality of the state is particularly evident in questions relating to gender, and male and female sexuality.

Book Synopsis Dowry and Inheritance by : Srimati Basu
Download or read book Dowry and Inheritance written by Srimati Basu and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of dowry in modern India epitomizes the gulf between the ideal and the real. Stridhan or dakshina were gifts traditionally given at marriage to ensure the well-being of the bride in her new home. In its modern form, however, the demand for dowry has led to brides being tortured and even killed. The socialization of young girls into deference to parents-in-law and husband has spawned a 'culture of silence' that leaves them open to harassment. Despite preventive litigation, dowry remains a widespread 'social evil' - a marker of social status - more common, disturbingly, among the educated urban middle classes than among urban poor or rural population. While caste restrictions on the choice of marriage partners seem to have eased, socio-economic factors have gained in significance. Dowry is also making inroads into communities that did not follow the practice traditionally. Understanding the tenacity of dowry is a step towards ending an exploitative practice.

Book Synopsis Dowry Murder: Reinvestigating A Cultural by : Veena Talwar Oldenburg
Download or read book Dowry Murder: Reinvestigating A Cultural written by Veena Talwar Oldenburg and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2010 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dowry in India has long been blamed for the murder of wives and female infants. Reconstructing the history of dowry in this highly provocative book, Veena Talwar Oldenburg argues that dowry is not always the motive for these killings as is widely believed; nor are these crimes a product of Indian culture or caste system. In the pre-colonial period, dowry, an institution managed by women to enable them to establish their independence, was a safety net. As a consequence of massive economic and societal upheaval brought on by British rule, however, women's control of the system diminished and dowry became extortion." -- Page 4 of cover.

Book Synopsis Gender Discrimination in Land Ownership by : Prem Chowdhry
Download or read book Gender Discrimination in Land Ownership written by Prem Chowdhry and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 2009-06-03 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary India demonstrates a curious labyrinth of land ownership patterns and rights for women co-existing in various states and the inter-regional and intra-regional differences between communities and caste groups. Initiated by the Centre for Rural Studies of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, this volume is a collection of essays on Land Reforms in India by social scientists across disciplines from fourteen different states. The editors offer an in-depth analysis of the laws governing access and control of land and its ownership by women in the various states of India. They examine the diverse ways in which discrimination is experienced by them in their respective states and propose ways to counter this rampant gender inequality. With the help of data the book shows the differences in land ownership patterns and land rights for women across regions, communities and castes. It understands how and why the state laws in relation to agricultural labor, tenants and other farmers, land ceilings, allocation of surplus lands, distribution of ownership titles and other land reforms have failed to accommodate women. Gender Discrimination in Land Ownership examines the dominant role played by cultural and customary practices in depriving women of legal rights which they may have had, and proposes ways, based upon extensive field work as well as interaction between legal experts, social activists and bureaucrats, to counter gender inequality in all the major zones of India. This interdisciplinary study with its wide contemporary reach will encourage debates on existing society and the augmentation/implementation of laws and rights required to establish a more just and equitable society.

Book Synopsis Societies, Social Inequalities and Marginalization by : Raghubir Chand
Download or read book Societies, Social Inequalities and Marginalization written by Raghubir Chand and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of marginality or marginalization, as a concept, characterizing a situation of impediments – social, political, economic, physical, and environmental – that impact the abilities of many people and societies to improve their human condition. It examines a wide range of examples and viewpoints of societies struggling with poverty, social inequality and marginalization. Though the book will be especially interesting for those looking for insights into the situation and position of ethnic groups living in harsh mountainous conditions in the Himalayan region, examples from other parts of the world such as Kyrgyzstan, Israel, Switzerland and Finland provide an opportunity for comparison of marginality and marginalization from around the world. Also addressed are issues such as livelihood, outmigration and environmental threats, taking into account the conditions, scale and perspective of observation. Throughout the text, particular attention is given to the context and concept of ‘marginalization’, which sadly remains a persistent reality of human life. It is in this context that this book seeks to advance our global understanding of what marginalization is, how it is manifested and what causes it, while also proposing remedial strategies.
