Book excerpt: Mesoscale eddies in the ocean mix fluid parcels in a way that is highly constrained by the stratified nature of the fluid - so much so that much of our intuition about ocean mixing comes from thinking in density coordinates. Temporal-residual-mean (TRM) theory provides the link between the different views that are apparent from averaging turbulent flow in height coordinates and in density coordinates. The TRM theory reduces the parameterization problem from three dimensions to two dimensions and it shows how the divergent part of the relevant eddy density flux is skew-symmetric in height coordinates and that the total advection velocity can be adiabatic. The Gent-McWilliams scheme is best interpreted as a scheme for implementing the temporal residual mean. The TRM theory has very specific things to say about how the tracers in coarse-resolution models should be interpreted and how the skew diffusion stream function should approach zero at boundaries. Here it is emphasized that the extra advection in the TRM theory is not the bolus transport because the extra TRM advection is non-divergent and diapycnal in character while the bolus velocity is divergent and adiabatic. When using eddy-permitting numerical model results to deduce a parameterization for mesoscale eddies, it is very important to use the full TRM theory, and in so doing, the parameterization task is simplified somewhat.

Book excerpt: Climate simulation with numerical oceanic models requires a proper parameterization scheme in order to represent the effects of unresolved mesoscale eddies. Even though a munber of schemes have been proposed and some have led to improvements in the simulation of the bulk climatological properties, the success of the parameterizations in representing the mesoscale eddies has not been investigated in detail. This thesis examines the role of eddies in a 105-years long basin scale eddy resolving simulation with the MIT General Circulation Model (GCM) forced by idealized wind stress and relaxation to prescribed meridional temperature; this thesis also evaluates the Fickian diffusive, the diabatic Green-Stone (GS) and the quasi-adiabatic Gent-McWilliams (GM) parameterizations in a diagnostic study and a series of coarse resolution experiments with the same model in the same configuration. The mesoscale eddies in the reference experiment provide a significant contribution to the thermal balance in limited areas of the domain associated with the upper 1000M of the boundary regions. Specifically designed diagnostic tests of the schemes show that the horizontal and vertical components of the parameterized flux are not simultaneously downgradient to the eddy heat flux. The transfer vectors are more closely aligned with the isopycnal surfaces for deeper layers, thus demonstrating the adiabatic nature of the eddy heat flux for deeper layers. The magnitude of the coefficients is estimated to be consistent with traditionally used values. However, the transfer of heat associated with timedependent motions is identified as a complicated process that cannot be fully explained with any of the local parameterization schemes considered. The eddy parameterization schemes are implemented in the coarse resolution configuration with the same model. A series of experiments exploring the schemes' parameter space demonstrate that Fickian diffusion has the least skill in the climatological simulations because it overestimates the temperature of the deep ocean and underestimates the total heat transport. The GS and GM schemes perform better in the simulation of the bulk climatological properties of the reference solution, although the GM scheme in particular produces an ocean that is consistently colder than the reference state. Comparison of the eddy heat flux divergence with the parameterized divergences for typical parameter values demonstrates that the success of the schemes in the climatological simulation is not related to the representation of the eddy heat flux but to the representation of the overall internal mixing processes.

Today, some of the most challeng ing issues remaining in ocean modeling are associated with parameterizing the effects of these high-frequency, small-space scale processes. Accurate parameterizations are especially needed in long term integrations of coarse resolution ocean models that are designed to understand the ocean vari ability within the climate system on seasonal to decadal time scales. Traditionally, parameterizations of subgrid-scale, high-frequency mo tions in ocean modeling have been based on simple formulations, such as the Reynolds decomposition with constant diffusivity values. Until recently, modelers were concerned with first order issues such as a correct represen tation of the basic features of the ocean circulation. As the numerical simu lations become better and less dependent on the discretization choices, the focus is turning to the physics of the needed parameterizations and their numerical implementation. At the present time, the success of any large scale numerical simulation is directly dependent upon the choices that are made for the parameterization of various subgrid processes.

Book excerpt: The influence of mesoscale ocean eddies on near-surface ocean temperature, surface stress and phytoplankton communities is investigated by collocating numerous satellite measurements along with vertical profiles of oceanic temperature and salinity to the interiors of eddies identified and tracked in altimetric sea surface height maps. The surface currents associated with mesoscale ocean eddies impart a curl of the surface stress from the relative motion between surface air and water. This stress curl has a polarity opposite that of the vorticity of the eddy, thus attenuating the eddies by generating Ekman upwelling in the cores of anticyclones and downwelling in the cores of cyclones. Ekman pumping also arises from eddy-induced spatial variability of the sea surface temperature (SST) field that generates a wind stress curl in regions of crosswind SST gradients through a response of surface winds to SST-induced surface heating variations. SST-induced Ekman pumping is shown to be secondary to surface current-induced pumping in most regions of the World Ocean. Eddy-induced Ekman pumping resulting from the combination of surface current effects and air-sea interaction represents an order 1 perturbation of the background, basin-scale Ekman pumping velocities from the large-scale wind fields. In western boundary currents and equatorward-flowing eastern boundary currents, cyclonic eddies preferentially entrain water from the coastal side of the boundary current, which primes the interiors of cyclones to have phytoplankton concentrations that are elevated relative to the background. In contrast, anticyclones formed in these regions contain locally depressed phytoplankton concentrations from the offshore waters. While eddy pumping from vertical displacements of isopycnals during eddy formation can affect the biology in the interiors of cyclones during the transient stage of their development, this ecosystem response cannot be sustained because of the persistent eddy-induced Ekman downwelling throughout the rest of the eddy lifetimes. Likewise, the persistent eddy-induced Ekman upwelling in anticyclones is of little benefit because of their low phytoplankton content at the time of formation. A definitive response to eddy pumping is therefore difficult to detect from satellite observations alone. Eddies formed in regions where anticyclones preferentially entrain water with elevated phytoplankton concentrations, such as the South Indian Ocean, or in some mid-ocean gyre regions where small-amplitude eddies form (e.g., the oligotrophic South Pacific), an ecosystem response to eddy-induced Ekman pumping is observed. Conversely, cyclones in these regions entrain water that is low in chlorophyll, resulting in negative chlorophyll anomalies that are sustained by Ekman downwelling throughout the eddy lifetimes. The phytoplankton response to eddy-induced Ekman upwelling in anticyclones is seasonal, occurring only during the winter. It is proposed that the mechanism for the lack of ecosystem response to eddy-induced Ekman upwelling during the summer is the decoupling of the mixed layer from the nutricline. The observations presented in this dissertation provide a baseline from which coupled ocean circulation and biogeochemical models can be assessed. If coupled models are able to reproduce correctly the observed influence of mesoscale eddies on photoautotrophic communities, further insight into the mechanisms for this variability could be gained from the model output using the methodologies developed in this dissertation together with investigation of subsurface variability in the models below the depth to which chlorophyll can be inferred from the satellite observations.

Mixing observations are analyzed in terms of the stability parameters for shear and double-diffusive convection, and a nondimensional ratio of dissipation rates. While the model for turbulence describes most dissipation occurring in high shear, dissipation in low shear is better described by the salt-finger model, and a method for estimating the salt-finger enhancement of the diapycnal haline diffusivity over the thermal diffusivity is proposed. These calculations suggest that salt-finger driven haline flux drives diapycnal downwelling in the upper thermocline. The role of turbulence occurring above rough bathymetry in the abyssal Brazil Basin is also considered. The mixing levels along sloping bathymetry exceed the levels observed on ridge crests and canyon floors. Additionally, mixing levels modulated in phase with the spring-neap tidal cycle. A model of the dissipation rate is derived and used to specify the turbulent mixing rate and constrain the diapycnal advection in an inverse model for the steady circulation. The inverse model solution reveals the presence of a secondary circulation with zonal character. These results suggest that mixing in abyssal canyons plays an important role in the mass budget of Antarctic Bottom Water.
