In Germany, cinematic imaginations of ... border crossings, multiple identities, and cross cultural encounters and the many experiments with hybridization, appropriation, and transculturation ... has been most noticeable in the case of Turkish directors working in Germany ... Filmic narratives depicting the experiences of Turkish migrants, Germans with a Turkish background, and of Germans in Germany's changing socio-cultural landscape draw awareness to Germany's changing cultural community and encourage reconsiderations of what it means to be German. Increasingly, Germany must see its self as a multicultural, de facto country of immigration. In this thesis, I discuss representations of first- and second-generation Turkish migrants in films by native German and Turkish-German directors. More specifically, I am interested in exploring Sigmund Freud's concept of the uncanny as a psychological element involved in the on-screen identity negotiations presented in the films that I discuss. While some Turkish-German films suggest a pleasure associated with hybridity, the on-screen identity negotiations that I discuss in this thesis demonstrate complex, continuous processes that not always result in enjoyment. Rather, feelings of estrangement, alienation, and unclear categorizations of belonging and identity emerge. These representations indicate the complexities of belonging in Germany with a migrant background, and demonstrate cinema's affect on the work of the imagination.

But sine the 1980s much has change in the cinematic representation of Turks, living in Germany. The former ‘mute Turk’ (Bhabha, 1990, pp. 315 - 317), the guest worker that was excluded from German society has become the multicultural second-generation immigrant that owns a German passport. Turkish-German filmmakers such as Fatih Akin, Thomas Aslan or Yüksel Yavuz deal with the topic of Turkish-German identity (Göktürk, 2002, pp. 253 – 255). Unfortunately, academics have not yet caught up with contemporary cinema: most critics still talk about the representation of immigrants as victims in western society. In Crossing The Bridge, Akin seems to celebrate Istanbul’s diversity and one wonders if contradictions can exist next to each other. Cultural extremes cause tensions. And these tensions are displayed in the Turkish-German characters of Akin’s feature films. To represent the being in-between Turkish and German culture of his characters, Akin uses the image of crossing between extremes. He crosscuts between two countries, Germany and Turkey. In Head-On (2004) the female character Sibel crosses between genders: she is a woman but acts like a man; she wears man’s clothes and behaves aggressively. The characters cross between languages: the Turkish-German protagonists speak both, Turkish and German, at the same time. Sometimes, they even switch into the other language within one sentence. This essay will analyse how Fatih Akin represents the character’s being in-between two cultures in his film Head-on and The Edge of Heaven (2007). At first, there will be a short part about Fatih Akin, then, I will give a short overview of both films, the issues and the characters. Finally, there will be an analysis of several sequences about the topics: countries, languages and gender.

Book excerpt: In Cosmopolitan Anxieties, Ruth Mandel explores Germany’s relation to the more than two million Turkish immigrants and their descendants living within its borders. Based on her two decades of ethnographic research in Berlin, she argues that Germany’s reactions to the postwar Turkish diaspora have been charged, inconsistent, and resonant of past problematic encounters with a Jewish “other.” Mandel examines the tensions in Germany between race-based ideologies of blood and belonging on the one hand and ambitions of multicultural tolerance and cosmopolitanism on the other. She does so by juxtaposing the experiences of Turkish immigrants, Jews, and “ethnic Germans” in relation to issues including Islam, Germany’s Nazi past, and its radically altered position as a unified country in the post–Cold War era. Mandel explains that within Germany the popular understanding of what it means to be German is often conflated with citizenship, so that a German citizen of Turkish background can never be a “real German.” This conflation of blood and citizenship was dramatically illustrated when, during the 1990s, nearly two million “ethnic Germans” from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union arrived in Germany with a legal and social status far superior to that of “Turks” who had lived in the country for decades. Mandel analyzes how representations of Turkish difference are appropriated or rejected by Turks living in Germany; how subsequent generations of Turkish immigrants are exploring new configurations of identity and citizenship through literature, film, hip-hop, and fashion; and how migrants returning to Turkey find themselves fundamentally changed by their experiences in Germany. She maintains that until difference is accepted as unproblematic, there will continue to be serious tension regarding resident foreigners, despite recurrent attempts to realize a more inclusive and “demotic” cosmopolitan vision of Germany.

Book excerpt: Multicultural literature produced in the mid-20th century has been criticized for reducing its protagonists to stereotypes, portraying the migrant as victim, and focusing excessively on conflict of an intercultural or intra-cultural nature. The works of many Turkish-German authors, such as Dilek Gungor and Aras Oren, have revised the immigrant narrative by not foregrounding the conflicts of alterity. These contemporary narratives focus on a more universal, more everyday experience where first-generation immigrants and their German-born children struggle with their unique circumstances. Young Turkish-Germans seek out paths of their own design, while mainstream German society and traditional Turks look askance at their audacity. This new perspective reveals life within, as well as between, the two cultures to be much more varied, fluid and less confrontational than political rhetoric would have us believe. Countering claims of German intolerance and insular Moslem immigrants, contemporary Turkish-German authors and film-makers are evidence of underlying currents of functional co-existence and cultural exchange. Recent decades have witnessed the emergence of a younger generation of Turkish directors intent on breaking away from this cinema of the affected. This emergent vein of cosmopolitanism is reflected in the work of female Turkish-Austrian director Feo Aladag, as well as celebrated Turkish-German director Fatih Akin, whose films go beyond attempts by earlier filmmakers associated with the New German Cinema to represent accurately the realities of living within two cultures. These contemporary directors have moved on to explore the various paths open to those of mixed ethnicity, to those living within but not wholly part of German society, to those who have severed their ties to tradition completely: crime, adaptation or return, or the search for self-determination.
