Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of survey articles and original research papers in the representation theory of reductive p-adic groups. In particular, it includes a survey by Anne-Marie Aubert on the enormously influential local Langlands conjectures. The survey gives a precise and accessible formulation of many aspects of the conjectures, highlighting recent refinements, due to the author and her collaborators, and their current status. It also features an extensive account by Colin Bushnell of his work with Henniart on the fine structure of the local Langlands correspondence for general linear groups, beginning with a clear overview of Bushnell–Kutzko’s construction of cuspidal types for such groups. The remaining papers touch on a range of topics in this active area of modern mathematics: group actions on root data, explicit character formulas, classification of discrete series representations, unicity of types, local converse theorems, completions of Hecke algebras, p-adic symmetric spaces. All meet a high level of exposition. The book should be a valuable resource to graduate students and experienced researchers alike.

Book excerpt: The representation theory of Lie groups plays a central role in both clas sical and recent developments in many parts of mathematics and physics. In August, 1995, the Fifth Workshop on Representation Theory of Lie Groups and its Applications took place at the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Argentina. Organized by Joseph Wolf, Nolan Wallach, Roberto Miatello, Juan Tirao, and Jorge Vargas, the workshop offered expository courses on current research, and individual lectures on more specialized topics. The present vol ume reflects the dual character of the workshop. Many of the articles will be accessible to graduate students and others entering the field. Here is a rough outline of the mathematical content. (The editors beg the indulgence of the readers for any lapses in this preface in the high standards of historical and mathematical accuracy that were imposed on the authors of the articles. ) Connections between flag varieties and representation theory for real re ductive groups have been studied for almost fifty years, from the work of Gelfand and Naimark on principal series representations to that of Beilinson and Bernstein on localization. The article of Wolf provides a detailed introduc tion to the analytic side of these developments. He describes the construction of standard tempered representations in terms of square-integrable partially harmonic forms (on certain real group orbits on a flag variety), and outlines the ingredients in the Plancherel formula. Finally, he describes recent work on the complex geometry of real group orbits on partial flag varieties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manifolds over complete nonarchimedean fields together with notions like tangent spaces and vector fields form a convenient geometric language to express the basic formalism of p-adic analysis. The volume starts with a self-contained and detailed introduction to this language. This includes the discussion of spaces of locally analytic functions as topological vector spaces, important for applications in representation theory. The author then sets up the analytic foundations of the theory of p-adic Lie groups and develops the relation between p-adic Lie groups and their Lie algebras. The second part of the book contains, for the first time in a textbook, a detailed exposition of Lazard's algebraic approach to compact p-adic Lie groups, via his notion of a p-valuation, together with its application to the structure of completed group rings.

Lately p-adic numbers have attracted a great deal of attention in modern theoretical physics as a promising new approach for describing the non-Archimedean geometry of space-time at small distances. This is the first book to deal with applications of p-adic numbers in theoretical and mathematical physics. It gives an elementary and thoroughly written introduction to p-adic numbers and p-adic analysis with great numbers of examples as well as applications of p-adic numbers in classical mechanics, dynamical systems, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, quantum field theory and string theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automorphic Forms and Geometry of Arithmetic Varieties deals with the dimension formulas of various automorphic forms and the geometry of arithmetic varieties. The relation between two fundamental methods of obtaining dimension formulas (for cusp forms), the Selberg trace formula and the index theorem (Riemann-Roch's theorem and the Lefschetz fixed point formula), is examined. Comprised of 18 sections, this volume begins by discussing zeta functions associated with cones and their special values, followed by an analysis of cusps on Hilbert modular varieties and values of L-functions. The reader is then introduced to the dimension formula of Siegel modular forms; the graded rings of modular forms in several variables; and Selberg-Ihara's zeta function for p-adic discrete groups. Subsequent chapters focus on zeta functions of finite graphs and representations of p-adic groups; invariants and Hodge cycles; T-complexes and Ogata's zeta zero values; and the structure of the icosahedral modular group. This book will be a useful resource for mathematicians and students of mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p-adic numbers are of great theoretical importance in number theory, since they allow the use of the language of analysis to study problems relating toprime numbers and diophantine equations. Further, they offer a realm where one can do things that are very similar to classical analysis, but with results that are quite unusual. The book should be of use to students interested in number theory, but at the same time offers an interesting example of the many connections between different parts of mathematics. The book strives to be understandable to an undergraduate audience. Very little background has been assumed, and the presentation is leisurely. There are many problems, which should help readers who are working on their own (a large appendix with hints on the problem is included). Most of all, the book should offer undergraduates exposure to some interesting mathematics which is off the beaten track. Those who will later specialize in number theory, algebraic geometry, and related subjects will benefit more directly, but all mathematics students can enjoy the book.

Book excerpt: Over the last 50 years the theory of p-adic differential equations has grown into an active area of research in its own right, and has important applications to number theory and to computer science. This book, the first comprehensive and unified introduction to the subject, improves and simplifies existing results as well as including original material. Based on a course given by the author at MIT, this modern treatment is accessible to graduate students and researchers. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter to help the reader review the material, and the author also provides detailed references to the literature to aid further study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a systematic new approach to the construction and analysis of semisimple $p$-adic groups. The basic construction presented here provides an analogue in certain cases of the Harish-Chandra homomorphism, which has played an essential role in the theory of semisimple Lie groups. The book begins with an overview of the representation theory of GL$_n$ over finite groups. The author then explicitly establishes isomorphisms between certain convolution algebras of functions on two different groups. Because of the form of the isomorphisms, basic properties of representations are preserved, thus giving a concrete example to the correspondences predicted by the general philosphy of Langlands. The first chapter, suitable as an introduction for graduate students, requires only a basic knowledge of representation theory of finite groups and some familiarity with the general linear group and the symmetric group. The later chapters introduce researchers in the field to a new method for the explicit construction and analysis of representations of $p$-adic groups, a powerful method clearly capable of extensive further development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume the author further develops his philosophy of quantum interpolation between the real numbers and the p-adic numbers. The p-adic numbers contain the p-adic integers Zp which are the inverse limit of the finite rings Z/pn. This gives rise to a tree, and probability measures w on Zp correspond to Markov chains on this tree. From the tree structure one obtains special basis for the Hilbert space L2(Zp,w). The real analogue of the p-adic integers is the interval [-1,1], and a probability measure w on it gives rise to a special basis for L2([-1,1],w) - the orthogonal polynomials, and to a Markov chain on "finite approximations" of [-1,1]. For special (gamma and beta) measures there is a "quantum" or "q-analogue" Markov chain, and a special basis, that within certain limits yield the real and the p-adic theories. This idea can be generalized variously. In representation theory, it is the quantum general linear group GLn(q)that interpolates between the p-adic group GLn(Zp), and between its real (and complex) analogue -the orthogonal On (and unitary Un )groups. There is a similar quantum interpolation between the real and p-adic Fourier transform and between the real and p-adic (local unramified part of) Tate thesis, and Weil explicit sums.
