La représentation hiérarchique proposée est basée sur une approche pyramidale utilisant les filtres non linéaires de la morphologie mathématique. La partie II propose d'abord un état de l'art des transformations pyramidales puis décrit le principe de la pyramide morphologique. Ses propriétés sont étudiées au travers de différents paramétrages et des familles qui en découlent. La pyramide morphologique permet d'une part, de séparer à chaque niveau de résolution les éléments de détails par leur taille et leur réflectance par rapport à l'environnement, et, d'autre part, de représenter les images aux niveaux de perception inférieurs. La partie III du mémoire est consacrée aux applications des pyramides morphologiques à l'analyse des surfaces observées. La décomposition des éléments imbriqués dans les scènes en signaux séparables à différentes résolutions démontre la capacité de caractérisation multi-échelle. On montre également comment des traitements de reconstruction appliqués aux détails contribuent à cette analyse. Différents exemples de paysages analysés illustrent la méthodologie développée. La partie IV consiste à fusionner des données de résolutions différentes, notamment celles issues de capteurs à haute résolution et à grand champ de vue. L'approche de fusion par pyramide morphologique créé ainsi des données de synthèse à haute résolution spatiale et à haute fréquence temporelle qui permettent une approche nouvelle du suivi des surfaces terrestres. Les résultats de ce principe de fusion sont présentés en fonction de différents jeux de dates d'acquisition des images. La conclusion souligne trois perspectives très prometteuses. Premièrement, la pyramide morphologique peut être utilisée comme un navigateur exploitant les différents niveaux de résolution spatiale permettant l'accès à une information plus ou moins détaillée. Ensuite, la pyramide morphologique ouvre des opportunités intéressantes au recalage d'images de résolutions différentes. Finalement, la pyramide morphologique est un cadre intéressant pour la compression de données par le choix des différents paramètres autorisés.

In his book, James Hoch provides a comprehensive account of these words--their likely origins, their contexts, and their implications for the study of Egyptian and Semitic linguistics and Late-Bronze and Iron-Age culture in the eastern Mediterranean. Unlike previous word catalogs, this work consists of concise word studies and contains a wealth of linguistic, lexical, and cultural information. Hoch considers some five hundred Semitic words found in Egyptian texts from about 1500 to 650 b.c.e. Building on previous scholarship, he proposes new etymologies and translations and discusses phonological, morphological, and semantic factors that figure in the use of these words. The Egyptian evidence is essential to an understanding of the phonology of Northwest Semitic, and Hoch presents a major reconstruction of the phonemic systems. Of equal importance is his account of the particular semantic use of Semitic vocabulary, in contexts sometimes quite different from those of the Hebrew scriptures and Ugaritic myths and legends. Book excerpt: In the late 1950s, like tens of thousands of young men of his generation, Pierre Bourdieu, having recently passed the agrégation in philosophy, found himself immersed in the Algerian war. Motivated by an impulse that, as he himself says, ‘was civic rather than political’, nothing seemed more important to him than to understand the Algerian situation and provide the elements that would enable others to come to an informed judgement about it. In extremely tough conditions and along with a small group of students, Bourdieu undertook a series of studies across an Algeria that was tightly patrolled by the army, leading him to discover the shocking reality of the resettlement camps and to analyse the mechanisms of destruction of Algerian society of which they were emblematic. To achieve the objectives he had set himself, Bourdieu had to carry out a genuine intellectual conversion, acquiring an ethnographic understanding of Algerian society, learning sociological analysis at a breakneck pace and inventing new instruments - both theoretical and empirical - that would enable him to understand the relations of domination specific to colonialism. These new tools also enabled him to analyse the nature of the crisis that the war had both produced and manifested. Book excerpt: This Memoir provides a comprehensive review of the Precambrian basins of the four Archaean nuclei of India (Dharwar, Bastar, Singhbhum and Aravalli-Bundelkhand), encompassing descriptions of the time-space distribution of sedimentary-volcanic successions, the interrelationship between tectonics and sedimentation, and basin histories. Studies of 22 basins within the framework of an international basin classification scheme deepen an understanding of the basin architecture especially for cratonic basins. Most Indian sedimentary successions formed as cratonic to extensional-margin rift and thermal-sag basins, some reflecting mantle plume movement, subcrustal heating or far-field stress. This Memoir shows that Phanerozoic plate-tectonic and sequence stratigraphic principles can be applied to the Precambrian basins of large Archaean provinces. The differences between the stratigraphic architecture of the Indian Precambrian and examples of Phanerozoic basin-fill successions elsewhere are ascribed to variable rates and intensities of the controls on accommodation and sediment supply, and changes inherent in the evolution of the hydrosphere-atmosphere and biosphere systems.

Book excerpt: Much orthodox economic theory is based on assumptions which are treated as self-evident: supply and demand are regarded as independent entities, the individual is assumed to be a rational agent who knows his interests and how to make decisions corresponding to them, and so on. But one has only to examine an economic transaction closely, as Pierre Bourdieu does here for the buying and selling of houses, to see that these abstract assumptions cannot explain what happens in reality. As Bourdieu shows, the market is constructed by the state, which can decide, for example, whether to promote private housing or collective provision. And the individuals involved in the transaction are immersed in symbolic constructions which constitute, in a strong sense, the value of houses, neighbourhoods and towns. The abstract and illusory nature of the assumptions of orthodox economic theory has been criticised by some economists, but Bourdieu argues that we must go further. Supply, demand, the market and even the buyer and seller are products of a process of social construction, and so-called ‘economic' processes can be adequately described only by calling on sociological methods. Instead of seeing the two disciplines in antagonistic terms, it is time to recognize that sociology and economics are in fact part of a single discipline, the object of which is the analysis of social facts, of which economic transactions are in the end merely one aspect. This brilliant study by the most original sociologist of post-war France will be essential reading for students and scholars of sociology, economics, anthropology and related disciplines.
