Book excerpt: A representation of nonstationary narrowband random processes in terms of nonstationary quadrature components is proposed in a form analogous to that used to represent wide sense stationary narrowband random processes. The representation is then applied t a specific case in which the nonstationary narrowband random process is generated by the product of white noise and a deterministic periodic signal and then is processed by a narrowband filter. This representation is used in the modeling of a bi-level pulsed noise jammer which is assumed to be present in a communication channel. The effect of such a jammer on a direct sequence, binary phase shift keyed (DS-BPSK) spread spectrum communication receiver is evaluated and characterized interns of the error rate performance of the receiver. Families of performance curves are plotted to demonstrate the effect of various parameters, namely signal-go-noise ratio, jammer power to signal power ratio, and processing gain, on the error rate of the complete spread spectrum receiver. The analysis carried out differentiates between two cases, namely fast jammers and slow jammers. However, the analytical tools developed make it possible to consider either one of the two cases without resorting to quasi-stationary arguments as has been done in the past. (Theses).

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Because most real-world signals, including speech, sonar, communication, and biological signals, are non-stationary, traditional signal analysis tools such as Fourier transforms are of limited use because they do not provide easily accessible information about the localization of a given frequency component. A more suitable approach for those studying non-stationary signals is the use of time frequency representations that are functions of both time and frequency. Applications in Time-Frequency Signal Processing investigates the use of various time-frequency representations, such as the Wigner distribution and the spectrogram, in diverse application areas. Other books tend to focus on theoretical development. This book differs by highlighting particular applications of time-frequency representations and demonstrating how to use them. It also provides pseudo-code of the computational algorithms for these representations so that you can apply them to your own specific problems. Written by leaders in the field, this book offers the opportunity to learn from experts. Time-Frequency Representation (TFR) algorithms are simplified, enabling you to understand the complex theories behind TFRs and easily implement them. The numerous examples and figures, review of concepts, and extensive references allow for easy learning and application of the various time-frequency representations.

To combat this threat the GPS JPO initiated the Tactical GPS AntiJam Technology project, which yielded a prototype Digital Excision Filter (DEF) to remove narrowband jammers. This research describes the work performed to get tht DEF hardware operational and extends the previous research performed in this area. Comdisco's Signal Processing Worksystem was used to examine the effect of the DEF on the probability of bit error. This research uses peak to average correlation value, probability of bit error, and percent jammer power removed to examine the performance of the DEF. Fourteen jamming scenarios are examined using CW, pulsed CW, and broadband noise jammers. The DEF effectively rejected all of the jammers except the broadband noise jammer. In scenarios other than the broadband noise jammer, the DEF removed over 98% of the jammer power. The bit error rate curves show that the DEF significantly enhanced the performance of the system in extreme jamming environments. The results presented in this research show that the DEF is a viable, robust option to remove narrowband interference.

Book excerpt: The overall purpose of this research project was to seek new methods for improving the robustness and efficiency of spread-spectrum communications systems operating over non-Gaussian channels. The study was motivated in large part by the fact that modern military radio networks must operate in complex and variable noise environments that are often dominated by impulsive, non-Gaussian man-made noise sources. The research under this contract progressed in three basic areas: (1) optimum multiuser demodulation techniques; (2) direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access (DS/SSMA) signaling through impulsive channels; and (3) improved suppression of narrowband interferers from spread-spectrum signals. The common thread binding these three disparate multiuser-communications research topics is the fact that each involves the processing of signals in non-Gaussian interference. In the first case, the non-Gaussian interference is the multiuser noise interfering with the demodulation of a given user; in the second case, the non-Gaussian interference is the impulsive noise dominating the channel; and in the third case, the non-Gaussian interference is the spread-spectrum signal itself as it interferes with the prediction and consequent excision of the narrowband interferer.
