Book excerpt: Ce travail tente de répondre à 2 objectifs : 1) une analyse interculturelle des représentations du sida ; 2) un rapprochement entre ces représentations et les comportements sexuels. Après une phase prétest en 1996, l'enquête a été menée en 1997 auprès de 1859 lycéens et collégiens congolais. Nous avons pu constater que les élèves français présentent un niveau trés élevé de connaissances, des attitudes favorables et une tolérance importante vis à vis des personnes séropositives. Ils se montrent généralement inquiets et déclarent être prêts à adopter des comportements de prévention. Si les Congolais ont aussi un bon niveau de connaissances (quoique moindre), celui-ci s'accompagne de croyances à un taux plus élevé, d'une baisse des attitudes favorables et d'une certaine condamnation morale des personnes atteintes par le VIH/sida. Nous avons ensuite effectué une analyse factorielle exploratoire qui nous a permis d'obtenir 8 dimensions primaires et 3 secondaires, validée par une analyse confirmatoire qui nous a permis de constituer un questionnaire de taille réduite (25 items) structuré en 6 échelles. Puis nous avons analysé les comportements sexuels et les conduites à risque. Les Congolais présentent nettement plus de risques que leurs homologues français. L'analyse factorielle nous a permis de dégager 3 dimensions factorielles en matière de comportements sexuels : l'une correspondant à une sexualité à risque faible et 2 autres à risque élevé. A l'aide de techniques statistiques telles que les corrélations linéaires et les régressions multiples, nous avons recherché leurs déterminants. A la fin, nous avons confronté ces conduites aux représentations du sida. Les défenses, les attitudes favorables, la tolérance, mais aussi les inquiétudes, sont associées au risque le plus faible. Les connaissances permettent l'évaluation des situations à risque, mais ne sont pas prédicteurs de comportements sexuels plus sûrs.
