Book Synopsis The Cost of Insanity in Nineteenth-Century Ireland by : Alice Mauger
Download or read book The Cost of Insanity in Nineteenth-Century Ireland written by Alice Mauger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is the first comparative study of public, voluntary and private asylums in nineteenth-century Ireland. Examining nine institutions, it explores whether concepts of social class and status and the emergence of a strong middle class informed interactions between gender, religion, identity and insanity. It questions whether medical and lay explanations of mental illness and its causes, and patient experiences, were influenced by these concepts. The strong emphasis on land and its interconnectedness with notions of class identity and respectability in Ireland lends a particularly interesting dimension. The book interrogates the popular notion that relatives were routinely locked away to be deprived of land or inheritance, querying how often “land grabbing” Irish families really abused the asylum system for their personal economic gain. The book will be of interest to scholars of nineteenth-century Ireland and the history of psychiatry and medicine in Britain and Ireland.
Book Synopsis Marriage in Ireland, 1660–1925 by : Maria Luddy
Download or read book Marriage in Ireland, 1660–1925 written by Maria Luddy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What were the laws on marriage in Ireland, and did church and state differ in their interpretation? How did men and women meet and arrange to marry? How important was patriarchy and a husband's control over his wife? And what were the options available to Irish men and women who wished to leave an unhappy marriage? This first comprehensive history of marriage in Ireland across three centuries looks below the level of elite society for a multi-faceted exploration of how marriage was perceived, negotiated and controlled by the church and state, as well as by individual men and women within Irish society. Making extensive use of new and under-utilised primary sources, Maria Luddy and Mary O'Dowd explain the laws and customs around marriage in Ireland. Revising current understandings of marital law and relations, Marriage in Ireland, 1660–1925 represents a major new contribution to Irish historical studies.
Book Synopsis Reading the Irish Woman by : Gerardine Meaney
Download or read book Reading the Irish Woman written by Gerardine Meaney and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining an impressive length of Irish cultural history, from 1700–1960, Reading the Irishwoman explores the dynamisms of cultural encounter and exchange in Irish women's lives. Analyzing the popular and consumer cultures of a variety of eras, it traces how the circulation of ideas, fantasies, and aspirations shaped women's lives both in actuality and in imagination. The authors uncover a huge array of different representations that Irish women have been able to identify with, including heroine, patriot, philanthropist, actress, singer, model, and missionary. By studying this diversity of viable roles in the Irish woman's cultural world, the authors point to evidence of women's agency and aspiration that reached far beyond the domestic sphere.

Book Synopsis Edith and Florence Stoney, Sisters in Radiology by : Adrian Thomas
Download or read book Edith and Florence Stoney, Sisters in Radiology written by Adrian Thomas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the lives and achievements of two Irish sisters, Edith and Florence Stoney, who pioneered the use of new electromedical technologies, especially X-rays but also ultraviolet radiation and diathermy. In addition, the narrative follows several intertwined themes as experienced by the sisters during their lifetimes. Their upbringing, influenced by their liberal-minded scientist father, set the tone for both their lives. Irish independence fractured their family heritage. Their professional experiences, fulfilling for Florence as a qualified doctor but often frustrating for Edith as a Cambridge-educated scientist, mirrored those of other aspiring women during this period, when the suffragist movement expanded and women’s lobby groups were formed. World War I created an environment in which their unusual specialist knowledge was widely needed, and the sisters’ war experiences are carefully examined in the book. But ultimately this is the extraordinary story of two independent but closely bonded sisters and their abiding love and support for one another.
