Book excerpt: People spend most of their time indoors, and indoor air pollutants can cause both long and short term health effects. Awareness of indoor air pollution as an environmental issue, however, is relatively new. This book has been prepared to offer an up-to-date, comprehensive reference manual on indoor air quality to scientists and professionals active in this area. The intention of the book is to bring together a collection of contributions from specialists in the specific disciplines of indoor air quality, covering all points of view from various angles, from building design and building sciences, to health effects and medical diagnosis, toxicology of indoor air pollutants, and air sampling and analysis. One of the characteristics of this book is the multidisciplinary approach that integrates the expertise of medical doctors, architects, engineers, chemists, biologists, physicists and toxicologists. The resulting product is of great educational value and recommended for consultation as well as teaching purposes. The panel of conrtibuting authors includes top experts on indoor air worldwide, who have participated in international workshops and led the development of indoor air sciences over the recent years.

Book Synopsis Clearing the Air by : Indur M. Goklany
Download or read book Clearing the Air written by Indur M. Goklany and published by Cato Institute. This book was released on 1999 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's air quality is better today than ever before in modern history and continues to steadily improve. How did this remarkable turnaround come about? Basing his conclusions on a painstaking compilation of long-term empirical data on air quality and emissions data extending from the pre- federalization era to the present (some dating back a century), Goklany challenges the orthodoxy that credits federal regulation for improving air quality. He shows that the air had been getting cleaner prior to—and probably would have continued to improve regardless of—federalization. States and localities, after all, have always been engaged in a race to improve the quality of life, which means different things at different stages of economic development. Goklany’s empirical data refute once and for all the race-to-the-bottom rationale for centralized federal regulation. Moreover, technological advances and consumer preferences continue to play important roles in improving air quality. Goklany accordingly offers a regulatory reform agenda that would improve upon the economic efficiency and environmental sensitivity of air quality regulation.

Book Synopsis Sampling and Sample Preparation in Field and Laboratory by : Janusz Pawliszyn
Download or read book Sampling and Sample Preparation in Field and Laboratory written by Janusz Pawliszyn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-09-09 with total page 1170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title is the first comprehensive book on sampling and modern sample preparation techniques and has several main objectives: to facilitate recognition of sample preparation as both an integral part of the analytical process; to present a fundamental basis and unified theoretical approach for the professional development of sample preparation; to emphasize new developments in sample preparation technology; and to highlight the future impact of sample preparation on new directions in analytical science, particularly automation, miniaturization and field implementation. Until recently, there has been relatively little scientific interest in sampling and sample preparation, however this situation is presently changing as sampling and sample preparation become integral parts of the analytical process with their own unique challenges and research opportunities. Sampling and Sample Preparation for Field and Laboratory is an essential resource for all analytical chemists, and in particular those involved in method development. Not only does it cover the fundamental aspects of extraction, it also covers applications in various matrices and includes sampling strategies and equipment and how these can be integrated into the analytical process for maximum efficiency.
Download or read book True Green written by Ronald Brand and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the careers of senior executives of the US Environmental Protection Agency, True Green identifies the concrete actions that work in protecting our nation’s environment. By examining the exquisitely difficult tasks of executive leadership in environmental protection, one of the most conflicted public issues of today, these scholars provide lessons of executive effectiveness in the principal government institution essential to national environmental progress. The EPA shoulders great expectations from the public and political leaders on fulfilling its statutorily assigned activities. As a result, EPA must act in concert with state and local governments, nongovernment organizations and interest groups, as well as business and industry. This volume also highlights the career civil servants who bridge across from policymakers to the government bureaucrats who must make real the abstract policy choices of politicians. True Green uses the experiences of the individual contributors to provide a deeper understanding of the practices associated with effective executive behavior in the Environmental Protection Agency.
