This book was released on 2019-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Work of the Horn Scientific Expedition to Central Australia, 1896, Vol. 4 Lacking the immense advantages, for investigation, of this intimate and continuous association of the early settlers with the natives, the inquirer of more recent times, though possibly better trained in the methods of observation, experiences to the full the disadvantages that have been mentioned even if he should escape actual hostilities in remoter parts. Moreover in Central Australia, particularly, the urgent necessity for rapid movements, on account of the all important question of water supplies, not unfrequently precludes a sufficiently long stay in certain localities to allow of the growth of that mutual confidence which must precede all attempts to extract reliable information. Thus ethnological science in Australia has fared badly. Those who might have spoken have remained silent, while, too often, the trained observer has lacked the opportunities for observations. To no country is the remark of a distinguished traveller more appropriate than to Australia - that as a rule the men who know don't write, and the men who write don't know, and, if it must be admitted also, that ethnological investigations have been too little considered as part of the functions of an exploring party in Australia it must also be admitted that the difficulties in the way of these, as of other biological investigations, are very great on such flying expeditions. With the necessity of frequently covering long distances, by forced marches in waterless tracts, the quest for water supplies from sources either of unknown or of doubtful permanency being the first and paramount consideration; with the difficulties of transport of food in regions where no indigenous supplies exist, to say nothing of the carriage of collecting material and materials collected, the representatives of the various branches of natural history have often little scope for their efforts or the observer little time for deliberate and systematic observations when a detention might imperil the safety of the whole party. Though it is true that some of these difficulties have been minimised in recent years by the use of camels, enough still remain to form substantial obstacles to scientific exploration in Central Australia. Introduction, Narrative, Summary of Results, Supplement to Zoological Report, Map The scientific exploration of Central Australia, more particularly that portion known as the McDonnell Ranges, had for many years been desired by the leading scientific men in Australia, some of whom hold the opinion that when the rest of the continent was submerged the elevated portions of the McDonnell Range existed as an island, and that consequently older forms of life might be found in the more inaccessible parts. Travellers' tales also of the manners and customs of the natives, and the varieties of plants and animal life in these remote regions, had aroused a widespread interest, and at the solicitation of a few scientific friends I resolved to organise and equip a party, composed of scientific men, to throughly explore this belt of country. The proposition was received with great favour in Australia, and numerous applications were made, and even premiums altered, by gentlemen anxious to join the Expedition. The failure, however of previous Expeditions made it necessary to exercise great care in the selection of the various members, so as to avoid the disasters, in the shape of internal dissensions, which had wrecked the others. In order to secure the services of the best men in Australia I decided to make it a semi-national undertaking, and to this end invitations were extended to the Premiers of the principal Colonies, asking them to nominate scientific representatives. The Premiers of the Colonies of Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia responded most cordially. Victoria, partly through the generous influence of Lord Hopetoun, nominated Professor Balwin Spencer, of the Melbourne University. New South Wales nominated Mr. J. Alexander Watt, of the Sydney University, and South Australia nominated Professor Ralph Tate, F.L.S. and Dr. Edward Striling, F.R.S., both of the Adelaide University. Mr. C. A. Winnecke, F.R.G.S., was chosen as the surveyor and meteorologist, and the fact that, in addition to piloting the party to such points as they wished to visit, this gentlemen traversed and plotted about 27,000 square miles of country, and also made a series of valuable meteorological observations, speaks for itself. The general public were for some time under the impression that the Expedition was going out in search of gold. They could not understand a body of scientific gentlemen going into a desert country, giving up their time and services, and submitting to all the dangers, discomforts and hardships attendant upon the life for any other reason. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A welcome addition. They argue that rituals of reproduction in preindustrial societies are essentially political. In these societies, they say, men need to control the reproductive power of women in order to establish political power; where there is no law or central government, ritual is used as a way of gaining control. The type of ritual will vary, they conclude, according to the economic base of the society. . . .for those whoa re interested in the subject, this book is indispensable. Its thesis is challenging and the documentation is excellent. Paige and Paige have mad ean essential contribution to a long debate, and their theory is sure to stir new and lively controversy." --Science Digest This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
